[WIPz] Vurt's Solstheim Tree Replacer

Post » Sat Feb 12, 2011 6:17 pm

I've been giving Morrowind a break for some time now(probably a month I think) but when this is finished I shall make my triumphant return!
And promptly go to Solsthiem to take in all the new beauty these trees are going to provide.

Linora, I'm not adding any trees at all, just replacing with new models so it's not gonna be more or less of a tundra..

Some snowy areas:

I don't know; the trees look kind of yellowish in these pics... Is it my monitor or something? I also would imagine that making the trunks on the snowy trees more grayish than the green tree's trunks might add to that freeze-your-butt-off feel.

With the blue colour and lighting on everything else, the trunks look yellow-er through colour contrast. The trunk shadows have the same colour tone as the illuminated side, when you would expect the shadowed part to be bluer in a snow environment. The leaves look a little on the olive green side too, but it could be a shader/enbseries/anything.

How trunks/leaves colors looks depend much on what time of the day it is and what weather it is, since that affects coloring and like you said, shaders affects colors too..

Generally Morrowind looks best in the morning around 6, at least with my .ini settings ;) At daytime i've always thought Morrowind looks kind of bland, haven't figured out a good weather/truebloom setting for it :/

Which leaves are too olive green btw? I just realized the other day when i was out photographing how i've kind of neglected olive/military green leaves, there are a lot of leaves out in nature with that color. But ofcourse, copying how things looks IRL isnt always the best option for games.

I think I'm using your ini settings, at least partially. Yeah, 6-7 in the morning always looks amazing.

It's probably because the sun is directly overhead, washing out most directional shading. The base textures don't cover truly bright conditions.

That tall pine tree in http://piclair.com/data/tkmdt.jpg. I had a look around for what species it was, no idea, but similar looking trees seem to be native to far warmer areas. Maybe you could differentiate old growth and new growth colours.

Well since it's frozen, a color other than a dark green or perhaps brown would look very out of place i think. I saw similar ones in Brazil hehe, so yeah, not really fitting if it was a game based on real life locations, but since it's not i'm not that concerned. Might change that tree though, it has like 2x polys than my other trees.. Might use if for the Grazelands, with another leaf texture (obviously).

(looks much better in other lightning conditions, like always with MW).

It fits pretty well, you should keep it. I did a quick http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/26348-1-1273921513.jpg with adjusted colour/shading as I imagine it. The leaves are a little greener in the darker areas, still yellow up top. The trunk is is shaded by the branches, maybe a low res lightmap could work.

Looks good. Are these one's trunks finalized? They seem a little too solid brown. Probably due to the lighting though.

Hrnchamd: That looks really nice, its funny how such little detail can make all the difference. I hope vtastek finishes his cloud shadow maps someday, it'll surely help for the morrowind day time dullness.

Edit: I've created a lightmap but im not sure how to export it with the .nif (Blender). Do you know how?

Guitarjoe91: For those long tree trunks it doesnt look too good if it's a repeating pattern that you can see, so i've choosed a trunk with a more solid color tone and a vague pattern.

I was out in the woods today (awesome weather here for once hehe) taking some new photos so i'll probably change a few of the trunks.

http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/Advanced_Texture_Settings_in_Blender, guess it's called a "dark map".

Thanks. I did a bit of vertex painting instead to emulate shadows under branches and on the stem;

Is it just me or do you seem to have more trees than what are actually in vanilla Solstheim? I know you're just redoing textures so you must not have added more trees. Just looks like it is all. Maybe because they're thicker?

It's because they're bigger.
