[WIPz] Vurt's Solstheim Tree Replacer II

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 9:52 am

Took a little break from doing the desert plants / trees for FO:NV. Just spruces / fir trees this time around, so again a bit more lore friendly than the last version i did. I just started on this, so nothing final yet. It's just one snowy fir tree model so far.

We are talking about freakin pine trees, what's there to talk about lore? People really turned this lore thing into a massive hysteria :P

Anyways, I like the previous version more, but these are also good. Nice work, as always.

The main reason i'm remaking it isnt that the last one was completely off when it came to lore, it's just that the models will be better and more detailed. I've learned a few things since i did the old version :) The lower branches are withered and brownish, has dead branches etc.. the old version wasnt very detailed.

But there were also a few that didn't like the, um, tall pines with just leaves in the canopy. What are those called in english? I know that "pine" is the word for all those types of trees with "needles" instead of leaves, but i've never manged to find a specfic word for those trees that separates them from spruces or fir trees which are quite diferent..

Well that's a matter of taste I guess, I liked specifically those a lot (if I know what trees are you talking about :P), I was just rambling about the lore stir :P People are hooked on the term too much, I mean how much lore unfriendly can a pine tree be? :P Not like there are books describing exact aesthetics of pine trees in certain areas of Tamriel's history or something haha. I can understad if quest can be non lore friendly, but trees and rocks can't be lore unfriendly as long as they aren't exactly red with easter eggs hanging from it (on the other hand, seeing as it's a fantasy and there are absolutely no specifics on the colors of most flora, red pine tree wouldn't be against the lore either  )

Some people are waaay too anol about the whole lore thing, i agree. But yes its a matter of taste more than a complaint about lore i think. Flora and its color scheme and shapes has a big impact on the mood of a scene (this is why i love doing trees / grasses). I have some dude now on PES saying he don't like the new WG mod because the pine tree is too straight. So yeah, can't satisfy everyone.

Trees indeed are not likely to contradict TES-storyline, unless special unique plantlife (like the mushrooms of Morrowind) is replaced.
However, lore is not only story line, it is also about design.

I am an adoring fan of your trees. Other people working on the Skyrim-mod can tell that from my numerous whining sessions. And personally I also think that both tree replacers fit well to Solstheim. But this second replacer, in particular, will make purists happy.

It's called "tall" in swedish :) Yes i like them too.

I'll update the old mod too with new new models so there's one with mixed forest and one for the purists ;)

Excellent! Would it be possible to get the MGE wind animations working for the trees at some point like in this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLSf8pnBC3w&feature=related, or is that a lost cause?

I tested, it seems that tree animations are disabled in MGE XE (i think i remember Hrnchamd mentioning it too, when i think of it). And anyhow, there were at least 2-3 bugs the last time i tested, so i don't think it will be an option.

Some more models

People often use the term 'lore-friendly' to mean 'looking like the original', which is confusing as they're not really the same thing. It's not about being 'anol'; it's just that many people (myself included) like the original designs and prefer to use replacers which stay as close to them as possible. As Vurt says, it's really just a matter of taste.

Looks great, though I did like your odd ball tall trees with the branches starting way high up. I prefer Lore friendly stuff(as you know) and I use lore friendly as a catchall term for everything dealing with the vanilla game, I like to keep the "feel" of it as much as possible. During my MW overhaul install I used your lite/lore friendly trees for some regions and Vitalitys trees for others the only exception was your Solsthiem Bushy version. Which I thought did a good job keeping the feel I use to get when exploring Solsthiem, the tall trees were fine, though I think there should have been not as many of them compared to the normal pines, but not a big deal( I can just disable some).

One suggestion, Blue Spruce! Please!

Seconded, that would be awesome! As well as other coniferous trees, cedar would be epic.

Blue spruce, i'll throw in one if i can create a decent looking model. Do you want a snowy one or without snow?

Which cedar are you thinking of, there are several types, give an image example. I could maybe make one for version 1 since that mod has a mixed forest.

I would say without snow only because I don't want the blue to be covered up(thats why there so cool). So if your only going to make one, my vote is for no snow. But either is better than none.
