[RELz] Vurt's Trees & Grass Replacer

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 12:01 pm

Vurt's
FO:NV Trees & Grass Replacer

Features:

* Replaces all default Joshua Trees with bigger and more detailed models.

* Replaces the default Honey Mesquite tree. The new model has darker leaves (wont glow in the night like the default leaves) and is bigger and more tree like.

* Optional .esp file. Adds 8 new trees to the wasteland. All trees are inspired from actual trees that grows in the Mojave desert. I've tried to place these as natural as
possible, more trees grows where there's water for example.

* New grass - made to blend in better with most ground textures. 2048x2048 resolution.

Looking pretty good. I like the Joshua trees much better. With the grass I am not certain...maybe too much variety? Or maybe I am just used to the default grass.

The original grass doesnt blend in well with the ground texture (might be because i'm using a replacer though) the pop-ups are very noticeable with such bright colors, with my grass it's much less noticeable.

i've changed the colors a bit since the first version i did..

How about getting animated trees for the mountain regions, its amazes me that that FNV has worse trees than Oblivion. Pine tress of at least OB quality would be great.

Tree animations are best done with a shader that is applied for all trees, its gets quite demanding otherwise (my experience with Morrowind), and particle animations are quite difficult to get right. Maybe someday we'll have MGE for Fallout (FGE?) and it can be done.

Oh well, it seems that Obsidian could not handle a game like this on there own. Its basically a stand alone expansion, for FO3(not a bad thing, just saying). Even the few trees in FO3 had animation.

As for your mod I did a brief test, looks great! I will use it from now on, unless there are some weird crashes, etc.

I checked out some real pics of Joshua trees in the Mohave because I wanted accurate looking trees and sure enough probably for preformace reasons Obsidian made then smaller than they really grow to. Your grass on the other hand, I saw pics both supporting your grass and pics that looked more likes vanillia grass, so I assumes its because of the season.

Yeah, the joshua trees can be very majestic looking, it was a missed opportunity to make them that small, that's why i wanted to create bigger versions.

The upcoming version has better looking bark, it was a bit too smooth and undetailed in the old version.

Edit:

Here's another tree i've now replaced.

http://piclair.com/data/ng3zv.jpg

This tree is very tiny + the leaves are really bright even at night, which makes it very unnatural looking, leaves doesnt "shine" like that.

As long you continue to match the real trees of the Mohave I will get yours lasted version. Joshua trees are awesome, before playing the game, I was thinking cacti when I though of desert in the US. I was unaware Joshua trees and the look of the Mohave in general, there really neat. Maybe my #2 fav tree now, blue spruce are still my fav. That would be great in Skyrim, you should do a UL landscape type mod for SR that changes one of the forest to blue spruce. I know I am getting ahead of myself, but it would be great way to add more color to SR in a realistic way.

Cool, I love the new trees. For anyone that thinks they don't makes sense, check out pictures of the Mohave, its has these kinds of trees.

Edit: Darn, I cant recommend the new tree part of the mod, like the tree mods from Fallout 3, the trees look terrible unless your upclose. They look like a mesh screen from a distance(and not even that far a distance).
Vurt is there any fix for this? I have the lod for trees on max, but this is well withen the lod distance for some of the trees.

Does it look like this: http://piclair.com/data/7f3g6.jpg ?

It's the same with the default trees if you mean the crappy alpha channel of the leaves, and the bad lightning, can't do much about since that has to do with the engine itself.

It's a bit sad that Morrowind (2002) with a fan made program (MGE) looks much, much better than a 2010 game heh

No it does not that looks fine, it looks much worse, just like the trees mods for FO3. The leaves turn in to a mesh screen(trunks look fine, joshua tress look fine), like a screen door kind of. Let me see if I can take a pic. Can someone remind me how? That become transparent basically, noticeable when the sky is behind them.

Also some tree are not so bad, like the ones I see shown on the Nexus. Near Camp Golf, that little Lake, had one of the worse examples.

Ok on a hunch I turned off Transparency multisampling using NV configator. And the the mesh screen effect went away. But now I can see what you mean about lighting/alpha channeling. Don't know what to think about it yet, it clearly not great but will have to play for a bit to see if I want to keep using the extra tree part of the mod or not. The joshua tree still look great though!

I turn TM back on, and when the sky is not behind your trees that do look better for it(in a way). Hmmm, Obsidians pine trees do not seem to have the same issue, I wonder how they avoided it?

With Trans M Sampling turned off the games pine trees look worse, and that couple with the less than steller look of the tree from a distance, mean I cannot recommend the extra tree part of the mod. Its just clearly not part of the original game, it does not blend well with the vanilla game. But the Joshua part of the mod looks great and I can recommend that.

Updated to 1.1

2 new trees and 2 updated trees in this version. The trees along the lake are now mostly dead trees instead.

Amazing, a beautiful and realistic tree replacer! I didn't think such a thing was possible!

Instant download. :D

Something like this for Fallout 3 would be phenomenal, too, if you have the time/patience/resources.

Jara: I'll make a FO3 version too, not sure when, but i'll do one :)

Updated to v1.2.

Changes:

* one of the dead trees are changed to a new model
* The Single Leaf Pine is tweaked (the lower twigs/leaves)
* new texture for the Juniper trees, the trees should now look a bit better in the distance
* changed alpha channel on of the joshua trees so it appears better
* .esp is updated with more trees and tweaks to a few of the current placement

Have you made other tweaks for distance trees or just for the junipers?

The leaves for the Velvet ash is changed a tiny bit, it's little more colorful. To me the other trees looks fine (see the screenshots) and fits the landscape. I tried a tiny bit more colorful versions, it made the trees look nice on their own, but they really stood out from the rest of the very bleak landscape, so they didnt fit in as well.

I mention the color palette in a question at the nexus, I think a little more variation could help. After all there trees in the original game with a brighter green(much brighter), check out my nexus comment for more detail.

Edit: The new version looks better and for those who like all the extras trees I am sure they will be pleased.

I prefer something more true to the current Mohave(and look of the Vanilla game) but the base mod(Joshua trees and grass) is hamtastic!
