Wait.. how big is this game?

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 9:11 am

Alright.. I've been playing Arena for about 3 days now, and I have a level 15 Redguard named Cyrus ;). I started out in the town of Lainebon Place in the Hammerfell Province and have been looking around and getting used to the game.

I decided to wander around outside of the town. I went in 5 or 6 random dungeons in the area (outside of the city) and wanted to see how far I could go, so I walked north for probably an hour and still haven't hit any boundaries, just passing temple after temple, miscellaneous farm houses and people wandering about. So my question is.. is the town just SO huge that I haven't reached the edge of it yet? Or, is all of this information randomly generated (meaning if I would try to make a map of it, it would never end, I'd just keep discovering new stuff)

Or, is it looped? I'm so confused. Is it possible to walk from one town to another? Is it possible to travel from one province to another just by walking? If all of this is randomly generated, then would I experience different buildings if I back tracked all the way back to the town I started from? I was under the impression that it was only the many caves/dungeons that were randomly laid out, but the landscape (the map, at least) was always the same.

Would the "map" (outside of the city) be different every time you play the game? Would it be possible to make a map?

It's impossible to walk from one town to another, the game just randomly generates new terrain infinitely.

Yep, need to use the fast travel function to travel between towns.

So, why do people say it would take like a week or two to reach one end to the map to the other? So where they just BSing, or does this only apply to towns?

Your confusing "it would take like a week or two to reach one end to the map to the other" with what is said of Daggerfall, and that is not BS. Arena on the other hand would probably result in you walking forever (well...until the game crashes from a cheksum error/overload etc.)

unfortunately, walking between towns in daggerfall is very rarely eventful.

Arena is positively enormous, but that goes little remarked, because as Freddo said, you can't "slow-travel", you can only fast-travel. But there are so many dungeons, I bet there are some nobody's found yet.

So in Daggerfall you can walk between towns if you wanted to?

And I believe the two weeks thing was exaggerated. I think someone on this forum calculated it to be far less...

I did not understand that. How did you do that? I only discovered dungeons when recieved quests from local rulers.

there is a chance for random generated dungeons to appear in the wilderness.

Those dungeons you speak of are on the province map. If you go outside the city gates, you will see some orange-red dots--those are wilderness dungeons that are nameless and don't appear on the province map. Keep traveling, you'll find 'em. Also, if you see someone walking around outside the city gates, you can ask him where the "Nearest Dungeon" is.

How is it not BS, sjvan0 just said its impossible to walk from one town to the other. Nobody answered does this only apply to towns question.

You can go from any exterior location to another using the wilderness in Daggerfall but not in Arena. If you want to try this exit Privateers Hold (the initial dungeon) and walk south for 5 minutes and you will enter the town of Gothway Gardens, which is one pixel bellow in the map.

Walking from PH to Daggerfall city for example would be possible but if takes 5 minutes to cross a single pixel of the map on foot and Daggerfall city is some tens of pixels bellow PH, well, i think you get the idea.

The chance of bumping into 2 or 3 unmarked dungeons while doing this would be great and not only dungeons but also temples, farm towns, cities, cemeteries. It's really a shame that Daggerfall wilderness didn't have roads and rivers and also background 3d objects that are visible at the distance like in Oblivion. This would make exploration on foot a lot more interesting.
