Wait?.....Jetpacks levitation?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 2:06 pm

One The main reasons they left out levitation in oblivion was because they didnt want players to levitate over walled city cells, and Im pretty sure the big citys still take a loading screen that take you inside the walls . And since jetpacks are almost the same thing (except science) I wonder what limitations they put on jetpacks? Maybe the suit can only go so high and then it slowely desends back down? Any one got any other guesses?

It seems to run on AP, so more AP, more flight.

It running on AP makes me think AP is some kind of juice the protag secretes and you plug in somewhere into this suit and it uses your AP juice as fuel.

I don't wanna think too much about what AP juice might be.

Oblivion used closed cities mostly of memory reasons, having all the named and equipped npc moving around in various gears required a lot of memory.

Not only was imperial city closed but also subdivided as the strip in FO:NV.

With current generation consoles this is not longer an problem.

This leaves out the strategical aspect, Oblivion had lots of designs where levitating would be an exploit especially the towers inside Oblivion planes. but also plenty of dungeons who uses jump downs as an quick exit of dungeons. Simply not putting the objective on top floor or have no access from roof to lover floors solves the issue.

Ranged weapons are also far more common in Fallout making flying up on an high location less beneficial, you can not sneak with an jumpjet :)

This would be my first guess also. The jetpack may not rise high enough to allow us to see over the walls surrounding cities. But my real hope is that cities are again part of the world space, as they were in Morrowind.

I think the jetpack is just a jumping replacement because you can't jump into this tank armor.

Stop thinking about it, it will make your head hurt.

And it makes me think of how much cheese I brought with me in Skyrim just to heal.

What makes you think the big cities will have loading screens? There's no reason for them now that the console's memory limit is no longer holding us back.

Wouldn't a big city with dozens of fully furbished NPCs with their own AIs be pretty demanding regardless of what you're using?

Not really, the game loads and unloads cells as the player moves in the worldspace each cell can have a certain amount of things in it, my guess is with the new consoles that quantity will be a lot more. Maybe there's even enough capacity now that a world builder can't sensibly fill it?

Don't you? That's... weird... *slowly edges away*

Also a bit off topic. Does anyone know about the changes to the engine of fo4? How many cells can be loaded, how big are the cells and so on?

Yeah the new consoles have 16x the memory of the previous gen. it's not an issue anymore.

The only loading screens necessary now will be between cells that can't be link physically like underground interiors and separate world spaces not directly attached to the main world space.

Well, there is also the processing load for handling a lot of AI and possibly culling of objects from rendering. Cities will, inevitably, have a higher density of NPCs and rendered objects than wilderness areas.

Hopefully most cities/settlements are open now, but I wouldn't be surprised if some buildings that are occupied by a large number of NPCs (like the Underworld in Fallout 3) are still separate loads, even if most one-or-two person homes are open.

Well, call me a crusader if you will, but that's not a Jetpack - it's a JUMP-PACK (because it does not sustain flight - it just gives you a boost so you can jump over obstacles or survive jumping off of buildings (and using them as retro-thrusters in order not to slam into the ground at full speed))

Still, I love having it (I alwas like it if games offer something that reality does not and a jump-pack? - Come on, the only thing even more cool would be to be able to fly constantly (real Jetpack!))

greetings LAX

ps: Yeah, I hope towns (I don't think there will be cities as such (meaning towns with thousands of inhabitants)) are part of the world (not more gates with loading screens (wouldn't that make my day? - Yeah, I suppose it would :)

I wonder if some city walls have secret platform openings up high and are only accessible through a the jet/jump pack where you can see the the city from up high and all thats left to do is get out of the pa and equiped your trusty plasma sniper and collect that beautifull green goo. Or shoot mini nukes down to the city....or teddy bears of death.

To be honest, this was my first thought as well. My second was how easy it would be for modders to implement real flight with it.

Note that if you use chems who boost AP generation like bean soup you could probably burn in an 45 degree angle go ballistic and then use the regained AP for landing.

Yes we probably get an early mod who make it run on flamer fuel to.

It's a jump pack, and seems to have a limit to the height, which may or may not be based on the players AP.
