Wait a minute... Why no ruined Oblivion Gates?

Post » Sun Apr 07, 2013 1:05 pm

Seriously, why are there no ruins of oblivion gates in Skyrim?
I understand that the Oblivion Crisis was 201 years ago, but surely at least on or two of them would still be peacefully crumbling in the wilderness? I can understand that most of them would probably have been cleaned up, although I think it's a little strange that none can be found at all. The Mage's College surely would have kept one for study or something like that

I think it has to do with how tired almost everyone was of Oblivion gates by the end of Oblivion. That, and I doubt Skyrim was hit as hard as Cyrodil. They don't have anything of the same strategic importance as Crystal-Like-Law or White Gold.

I guess there's Snow Throat, but that doesn't seem to have been active for a long time.

Considering even Blackmarsh was hit, I'd assume Skyrim would've been as well. They probably withered away to time or got cleaned up by the Vigilants.

It's been 200 years, I would guess that the Gates have either decayed, been dismantled for study by the Mage's Guild or other organisations at some point or just been destroyed by fearful locals.

200 years is a long time. It wouldn't be unreasonable for there to be one or two left in the wild, but it's not unreasonable that there aren't any either.

Knowing how the Nords are....they probably hunted them all down and destroyed them. Its been 200 years it wouldnt be that hard.

either they were destroyed by bandits, the nords or decayed from the harsh climate or simply broke down and now look like rocks.

I don't buy the natural decay or cleaned up reason - there are far more ancient ruins and old structures scattered across Skyrim...

There's a Sigil Stone in one particular quest - I daresay it's a leftover from one of the Oblivion Gates.

"If nothing else, the people in the area most likely would have completely destroyed any gates that opened after they closed. Going "Oh, they turned off, let's ignore them" isn't exactly the most brilliant idea with something that could potentially reopen a portal to Oblivion."

Yeah I agree with this statement I found on the interwebz

Remember that they're of Daedric origin. We have no idea how quickly they would degrade once their connection to Oblivion got cut.

Structures such as Barrows and forts are of far less interest to organisations such as the mages guild as portals to Oblivion (which are presumably made of some other-worldly material), and they would also be considered disturbing by locals, and unlike Bleak Falls Barrow they can be destroyed with relative ease.
