Wait, this game won't have immersion-breaking achievements w

If they break your immersion, just turn them off... If they don't then leave them on... It's not really that hard to solve this issue...

I like achievements. But like others have said, the best ones are those random/off the beaten path ones, as opposed to the ones that just chart your progress through the various questlines.
I always thought it was funny when I reversed pickpocketed a grenade in Fallout 3 (I think it was that anyway) and an achievement popped up. Made me chuckle that the devs or whoever knew that players were bound to pull sneaky/dike moves like that. :P

Haha, you kids and your immersion problems. Back in the 80s we had to leave our houses to play video games in hot, sweaty video arcades. You ever try to play pac man with pole position blaring away right next to you? Little kids you didn't even know screaming and playing tag. People just walk up and put their quarter on the bottom edge of your screen to signify that they want to play next! Right in your field of vision! It was madness, yet the real hardcoe players could drown everything out and become one with the game. They stood to play these games, too! On barely carpeted floor! Sometimes for hours!

It'll take more than a little notification on my screen to make my face crumple up like a paper headed for the waste basket and big greasy tears to start flowing out of my eyes! Because I'm made of sterner stuff!. Sometimes I wish for arcades to come back, the cacaphony of electronic beeps and whistles only drowned out by Duran Duran's Hungry Like the Wolf. I'd show you kids how someone plays video games like they have a pair!

Lmfao, I love this post :)

Yeah, they're in. And they do serve for satisfaction more than breaking out of immersion which I've never really found them to do.

Personally, I don't get it.... I'm here to play a game. I'd like that game to give me the information I need to, you know, play it.

I agree, which is why i use UI mods to display all possible information on the HUD. It's called "Heads-Up Display" for a reason ;)

If Steam pop-ups annoy you, then game UIs and nameplates et caetera should as well.

Huh, I thought there was a way to disable the Steam interface, which would remove all Steam pop-ups, but I don't see this option in the Settings.

Go to Steam -> Settings -> In-Game tab. Uncheck the box that enables Steam Community in game.

There.... no more notifications.

the easiest way to disable steam achievements is to use your console commands, just toggle something on and off like tcl or tgm.

I don't much care about achievements, they don't do much for my game play, nor am I one of those who cares if I did everything in the game. Who really cares if you kill 10,000 monsters or have ever played a game of caravan?

It's a gimmick that is designed to make obsessive/compulsive players kill themselves to get all of them, although they will any way since that's the way they do things.

STEAM achievements dont pop up in the middle of your game at least for me. if i want to know which ones i have........which is pretty much never......i have to actually go and look at them in STEAM. i dont know if its that way by default or if i changed some setting long ago but i never had any issues with them. believe me i would notice cause i HATE 99% of achievements with a passion that could fuel the entire eastern seaboard of the US.

I didn't realize it was your game. I thought it was for all of us. Can I at least come over and play then? :P

On topic, I can take them or leave them.

Never understood the point of achievements, in the old days they would unlock content like Golden eye and perfect dark. But nowadays its just like "well done you killed your first goblin!" err thanks... fail to see the point specially when people set out to get all the achievements when they give nothing game-play wise.

In Fable 3 (X-Box 360) certain achivements unlocked thing for your console avatar.

If you disable the Steam overlay it shouldn't give those achievement messages anymore, but that means you also can't use the browser or chat with friends.

the only good achievements are ones that require an extra amount of effort to achieve. playing the entire game with beginning equipment, no saving, not using any healing items etc. i dont mind certain ones that give you a small and i mean small increase in damage after you kill so many of x enemy. it only makes sense that if you killed alot of mutant bunnies that you would be very efficient at it.

stupid achievements are everything else. getting achievements for simply playing the game or doing things that you would normally do over the course of the game anyways like killing 100 bad guys or hacking 40 computers are dumb. getting achievement for completing quests is just asinine. im not sure why people like those kinds of achievements unless their moms never ever hugged them. its like the bus driver congratulating you for successfully getting on the short bus.

How do acheivements break Immersion? It's not like there's an over-excited American man yelling "YOU JUST KILLED YOUR FIRST DRAAAGOOON!!" with flashy lights and confetti appearing on the screen. =D

'AMERICA, [censored] YEAH!' <- Yes, Not that. Achievements are fine, They give you more to work towards.

 judging by how important achievements are to some people i would imagine a tsunami of angry, crying gamers complaining that the game isnt just patting them on the back anymore but its pointing out their failures as well. if they had negative achievements i would actually turn them back on.

I don't mind achievements. Like others have said you can disable it through Steam fairly easily so it shouldn't be an issue for those wanting it off.

The reason I like achievements is that they sometimes take mechanics of the game and make them difficult to get.

Take Counter-Strike Source for example:

Second to None
Successfully defuse a bomb with less than one second remaining.

Premature Burial
Kill an enemy with a grenade after you've died.

Black Bag Operation
Win a round while making no footstep noise and killing at least one enemy.

Those achievements are fun to receive. Or we could go the humorous route like "Magicka":

Never cross the beams
Cross opposite beams so that at least someone dies from it.

But I do agree on some points. Killing your first goblin shouldn't be something that pops up regularly.
