Wait...WHAT Version of DirectX Does Skyrim Use?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 7:41 pm

SO, as you all know, Skyrim just got preload today...and I decided to go perusing through the files and saw the folder "DX10". I just remember reading somewhere a while ago that it would only use 9? Anyone know anything about this?

As far as I know, it uses dx9 mostly and dx11 to boost performance (if you have dx11 compatible gpu)

I heard somewhere that DX11 would be in a later patch / MOD.

But I don't think people will see much difference when it does surface.

DirectX 9. Maybe you looked in the support folder which likely contains the newest DirectX update for systems (as in, system drivers - not that the game necessarily uses DirectX 10/11)?

I think it uses dx9 if you have XP, and dx 10 for some minor performance improvements if you re on vista/7. Steam, I think, is able to detect what you use and send the correct dx your way.

If you look inside the dx10 folder, you see there are files for d3dx9, d3dx10 and d3dx11.

Also keep in mind, DirectX version != Ingame graphics quality

Sorry, can't quite figure out what you're trying to illustrate with " != ".

More possibilities, and they probably use them

Not necessarily. Have you played the latest valve games? They do amazing stuff with DX11.

But yeah, maybe DX11 will be in a later patch, I have a DX10 folder in my steam install too.

Was also disappointed that the soundtrack wasn't in the preload... oh well :P

From what I've heard, it'll have it just for various improvements to the API (draw calls have lesser performance impact et.c.).

It seems unlikely they'll do anything DirectX 11 specific, besides various performance improvements.

Can you back up that claim? DirectX 10/11 isn't a 'magic layer' which magically makes stuff look better without any effort what so ever.

Ohh, didnt think about checking the filenames seperately. Alright

@xaxxiron777 it CAN make it look better, if the devs decide to take advantage of them.
Ofcourse they could have everything on DX9 level, but whats the point in including DX10 (and even DX11 how i just learned) files if they do that?

Those are files that go into the windows system32 folder. It does not necessarily mean the game uses it, just that they packed it with the newest updates for DirectX from the microsoft downloads page.
