Walk Speed

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:06 pm

Should not be affected by athletics/strength/etc...

I would always hate it when I had an escort quest...I would walk and they would get too far ahead....I would run and it would look ridiculous.

Is it just me that this bothers?

I think it bothers almost every PC player. What I would like to see is a variable level of speed that you can change using two buttons (Maybe scroll wheel?) that would directly affect run/walk speed.

You are not alone - this did my head in too. I'd like a set walk speed too; it's nice to just kinda go for a walk in the woods or wherever and really take it all in; this should moreso be a reason in Skyrim as all the environment is apparently hand crafted rather than generated...

I think if stuff we've been hearing about Athletics being removed then we might just have a set walk pace, run speed and then sprint speed. I can imagine if our movement speed increased with the increase of the athletics skill it would probably scew up sprinting anyway. So I imagine they did away with it, mostly to accommodate for the sprint feature.

Fingers crossed this means we can walk nicely this time haha.

Why did it look ridiculous?

I think they could take a page from assassins creed brotherhoods book with this one. In brotherhood if you walk in a crowd you will match thier speed and move with them when you stop controlling your player (Ezio the character will automatically follow the crowd at the same speed). Bethesda could do this in a simular way

My characters tended to walk faster than the charges. Never bothered me.

Also, in real life, walking speed depends on your habituated speed (and perhaps athletics) in real l life. Ask someone who's in the Army; it was my observation that the soldiers typically outpaced their significant others due to the specific stride length when marching, or making a timed ruck march.

As for it looking rediculous, nope, never downed on me to view it in that way. I just thought it was a pain in the rear...which it would be like in in real life.

So, long story short, it doesn't bother me.

Fallout 3 Speed is perfect maybe a little bit faster then that but not too much. Hopefully you aren't the road runner in this game and have realistic speed.

AC also had different walking speeds, Fast-Normal on foot and on a mount you could walk, gallop, full-speed of course i hope horses have some kind of stamina

Argh that annoyed me so much! I wish they'd do the same as me and run. But I do hope you can walk, and at a normal pace like 3 or 4 mph, not in slow motion!

IMO, there shouldn't even be an increase in the run speed, because it should be designed so that an increase is redundant. From slowest to fastest trek:

C = Sneak (slow speed)
C x2 = Crawl (ok, I'm dreaming but it's worth mentioning)
(Crawl + C = back to Sneak)

CTRL + W = Walk
W = Jog (slow run)
Shift + W = Sprint (fast run)

Furthermore, I think they need to let Sneak be natural and not a "mode". Detection needs to be based on sound and motion, and not whether you're in a mode or not and within a radial range. I mean, how the hell are monsters able to see me behind a thick wall or similar?

No not really.

I'm fine with how it is.

And we have sprint now. :)

But make horses actually faster than the PC this time around.

Why did it look ridiculous?

I think it looks ridiculous because the NPC would walk maybe 20 feet every 7 seconds. If you walked you could (in the OP's case) much slower, something like 20 feet every 10 seconds, making you constantly lag behind them, making you have to run. When you ran you would move at say 20 feet every 3 seconds. The ridiculous aspect is that your couldn't stay even with someone you were suppose to go somewhere with, without repeatedly tapping the forward button, causing you to kind of seizure along.

Personally I think it should be based on the NPC height, ESPECIALLY if we can change our height at the character creation menu. Tall NPCs move faster than slow ones. But ONLY for walking.

Is this just a problem on the pc? I don't recall it being like this on the console.

Being able to run really fast is a realistic speed in Nirn.

I personally would like it if they included str/althetics to calucate your max run/walk speed and then used how encumbered you were as a percent reduction. That way your not running around with your entire life in your bag, adds a bit more to the tactical situation when you have to decide do I bring an extra sword in case this one breaks or maybe a hammer, or neither incase I need to runn outta there quickly. This also would play along with players owning some sort of house/building in which to safely store their items. I also hope it isnt an all or nothing when dealing with items/weight. I don't want to pick up one more mushroom/arrow/dagger and all of a sudden be frozen.

God i also thought that was so ridicules. You should either get slower and slower approaching your max, or get slowed down over your max eventually coming to a standstill..

I think the max should be the "standstill-point" but like the last 50 should make you slower.

I also think the first 50 should give you a bonus to speed. ie loin cloth and sword

This really should be in. I hated doing escorts because I always was much faster and had to constantly stop and wait. That annoyed the hell out of me. Running speed should of course be differente depending on attributes/skills, because you WANT to run faster than someone else, but there are hardly any reasons for you to want to WALK faster than anyone else. Instead, you want to walk at the same pace so you don't have to stop all the time and wait for people (or, if you are slower, run after them, then walk with them for a bit, then run again... Argh!)
