Today while on youtube I came across this:

I know that skyrim has improved animations, but you really see improvement in this video.

I'll need to check, but I think the pace you move at is important when looking at the animations. Walking and running look good in Oblivion at a certain speed (Athletics at X and Speed at Y). But as speed and athletics increased, the more and more the animations looked clunky. Until you were walking and swinging your arms at the side like a psycho, lol. At least that's what I recall.

There is an optimum speed I think when the animations looked good. Let's see that Skyrim animation when the stats get maxed out and the joystick is pushed to the limit...

Someone pointed out on another thread that this was posted on *not the main topic but deeper in* that the second character appears to be looking where the camera is, instead of always in front of them.

Yeah, for slow movements it's really better to animate it slowly as well. Oblivion made it feel like you were just powerwalking everywhere. Now with Skyrim, I'd like to enjoy some osrt of awesome laid back stride. There's nothing cooler than striding nonchalantly away from a town you just destroyed.

What sticks out to me most is that, in the Skyrim video, the character's shoulders move back and forth slightly while he walks. Unlike in Oblivion where it is just his arms swinging. This is a really nice touch.

I've heard somewhere that Bethesda has a motion capture studio. It's nice that they are fully using it now.

I've noticed that my watching of the trailer again and again is making OB look bad when playing, just me?

But,yeah nice spot, more natural movement, and hints at improved muscle physics...

Excellent! In Oblivion, the walking looked robotic. In Skyrim, they've improved it so much that it actually looks real and very smooth. :celebration:

Yep. OB looks more and more like ... meh.

And I used to be so enamored with TES4 too, hahha. I thought it was the pinnacle of creation, the ultimate achievement of mankind.

Skyrim animation looks better for sure. You could tell anyway from the trailer. But your comparison does show a big improvement. :)
It looks more natural and fluid,it bodes well for the overall game, combat etc.

First off, it really does look SO much better. I feel like the key is to have walking at a SET speed. Running can be based on a skill/attribute (Though a set speed would make the animation easier to make look nice) but walking should always be one speed.

I really want there to be a way to TOGGLE walking on the console. I know, not gunna happen. But sometimes I just want to be able to WALK at a fixed speed, as opposed to having some crazy guy walking at like 5 different speeds and suddenly running for a few steps because I hate to hold the joystick in any position other than ALL THE WAY or not at all. Oh well, I know I willbe buying this for the Xbox AND PC eventually anyway (I'd buy just pc, but I don't have my really nice [really big] computer at college with me, only my xbox)

How dare you dis my walking style! :robot dance: :power walk: :bolt:

To me the walking just looks... slower. Perhaps they have wised up and realized that top speed relates to running, and may not affect walking at all, unless one insists on walking swiftly, which seems hurried and often unattractive.

On another note, males and females walk differently, men tend to rock and sway in the shoulders, while women tend to oscillate toward the hips.

I am really looking forward to this game!

And to think I used to be so attracted to TES3.

Times change I guess. Whenever someone sees the next best thing, they can only see the ways that its inferiors fail to meet its standards from then on. Screw you Crysis. It's all your fault that every game must be compared to now...

Besides the improved animations, walking and running will look more natural now that there are no more statistics effecting movement speed (please, correct me if I'm wrong :) ). No more characters running so fast their legs blur.

The thing that bothered me about the walk in oblivion was the bum wiggle. The male walk looked very feminine.

It looks great. Did they say whether or not they are using Havok animation? You can do some fantastic stuff with it, like leaning into turns, realistic hit reactions, etc. Would be really cool, check out their vids on Youtube. My favorite is the dismemberment one, would be interesting when fighting the pesky undead.

What statistics? If anything, I thought attributes have been cut?

The animation does look a lot better. What struck me the most was the graphical leap. How can anyone say this is only a minor upgrade?
