Walking in Shadows: A Thief's Tale

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 6:24 pm

This is my first Fan-fic so don’t judge to harshly. I’m not amazing when it comes to writing but I love to make stories so I thought I would try to materialize one. Thievery has always been a favourite of mine. In all of the TES games I have played my main character has been a thief. In my short time of being in these forums I haven’t seen many Fan-fics about thieves. I never understood why but then I dawned upon me that most people look for action and killing, those sorts of things. So upon that note I will try to do my best to entertain my audience and any constructive criticism, pointers and suggested improvement would be appreciated thanks.

This story takes place before the Oblivion Crisis and any events that transpired in that time frame.

Prologue

30th of Second Seed

Imperial City, Market District

“Come now Theadas watch your father you will need these skills when you’re older.” The young boy’s mother told him. Theadas watched intently as his father crept up behind a man and carefully removed the man’s coin purse. His father then stood up and walked over to his son and wife. “So how bout it? Do you think you can do it Theo?” Theadas’ father asked him. “Oh Zeno, he’s still young. Let him train with you some more then let him into the open world.” His mother replied. “I can do it mom, I can” Theadas insisted, he had been training with his father since he was seven. “Listen to him Aia, he’s been training with me for three years now let him have a go” Zeno protested to his wife. While his parents argued Theadas took in his surroundings. They were in the Imperial City Market District. It was about midday on a Tirdas, there were a few people walking around from shop to shop. Too bright out, maybe tomorrow. Theadas thought to himself and was about to admit defeat when an idea came to him. His parents still in mid argument were not paying any attention at all. Theadas made sure no one was looking then crept behind his father. Then made sure that he was out of sight from his mother as well. The coin purse his father had taken form the man was placed at his side when he started using hand gestures. Theadas reached up and just like his father had done just a few minutes earlier, carefully removed the coin pure from him. Took a couple steps back then stood and waited for them to stop talking. A few more minutes went by and they both finished, neither having really won. They both turned to leave when Theadas stepped in front of them, looked up at his parents and held up the coin purse and smiled.

“Go ahead open it.” Aia, Theadas’ mother told him. He opened the box he was given. He pulled out a steel short sword. He inspected it carefully running his finger up and down the edge of the blade. When he got to the hilt, THEADAS was inscribed on one side. Next he pulled out a cloak, a greyish green in colour with SHADOW HIDE YOU inscribed in Daedric on the inside of the hood. Last he pulled out a black leather cuirass. Aia smiled as she watched her son admire his presents. “Happy birthday my son.” She said sweetly. Theadas stood up walked over to where his mother was standing and gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you mom.” Theadas said with a big smile. He looked up at his father who was leaning against the wall at the back of their one room home. He shook his fathers hand and then gave him a hug. Theadas was looking him straight in the eyes now, it was his seventeenth birthday and he was the same size as his father. “Thanks dad.” Theadas said. “Well aren’t you gonna try them out?” His father replied. Theadas walked back over to his bed where he had laid everything out. He took of the long sleeve shirt he was wearing showing defined muscles all over his upper body. His muscle were result of many hours spent climbing onto houses in the Waterfront district as well as climbing up masts on ships that docked there. Not only had he developed strong skills for a thief in the past years but he had also become quite the acrobat. He picked up the blade and sheathed it. He pulled the black leather cuirass over his head and onto his upper body. Then he picked up the cloak. He looked at the unique lettering inside of the hood. He swung it around his body and pulled it over his head. It hung down to his knees. He then pulled his cowl up over his head, it covered half of face but he would still see. He turned to face his parents. They were standing beside each other now, his father’s arm around his mother’s shoulders. “You look wonderful dear” his mother said smiling widely. “Reminds me of a young, handsome thief I once knew. Hmm, if I could only remember who… oh right, me.” Theadas’ father chirped, then chuckled and winked at him. Theadas pulled down his hood, and then reached his hand up to fix his hair. He pulled his sandy blonde hair back so it was spiked to the side. He looked at the door and then at his dad, he knew it was late but he wanted see how his new stuff felt in action. His father sighed and gestured to the door and nodded. Theadas smiled and pulled his cowl back up and walked to the door. “Theo,” Theadas turned to face his father. “Shadow hide you.” His father finished. “And be careful.” piped up his mother. And with that Theadas set out into the cool night.

He stopped when he got to the Eleven Gardens District. It was around 11 so people were beginning to leave the taverns, most of them almost too drunk to walk. He was across the street from the King and Queen Tavern, the choice of the rich folk, the kinds that carry large coin purses on their person just because they can. Theadas smiled to him self. He watched from the shadows as people came out in twos and threes. He waited there for 15 minutes and was ready to change tactics when an Altmer exited alone. He walked straight for a couple of strides and then lost it a little bit as he crossed the street. When he got to the other side he was fifteen feet in front of Theadas. The Altmer started walking towards Theadas but then changed his mind and turned around and started the other way. He began walking towards the Talos Plaza. Theadas followed the Elf until they were fifty feet away from the stairs up to the gateway between districts. It’s dark in there that’s where I’ll get ‘em. Theadas thought as he planed his next moves; he looked up and saw a guard posted at the base of the stairs. The Altmer stepped out of the darkness of the sidewalk and into the light of the street. The Guard looked at the Elf and disregarded him due to the Elf’s state. I got it! Theadas mind jumped. He pulled his cowl back so you could make out his face and then stepped out into the street. He pulled his cloak close around him and approached the gate. The Altmer was already half way up the stairs. “It’s a cold one ain’t she.” Theadas exclaimed to the guard, who looked up nodded and responded “She is.” Theadas smiled and ascended up the stairs quickly but not fast enough to alert the Elf. The Elf was half way through when Theadas reached the top; he crouched low and moved quickly towards the Elf. The Elf’s foot steps echoed, Theadas flinched at every one. He was close now but not close enough to grab anything good. He took a couple more strides and caught up to the pace of the tall Elf. The end of tunnel was near Theadas had to make his move. He reached out took hold of the Elf’s coin purse and slowly pulled it free. As it came loose Theadas spotted the Elf’s key dwindling on a small thread tied to the Elf’s belt. Theadas pulled a small blade from his own belt and gentle sliced through the thread. With both key and purse in his possession Theadas slowed his pace down and stopped at the start of the Gateway going back to the Eleven Gardens District. Hidden in the shadow Theadas watched the man walk merrily down the street. Theadas put the key and purse away and followed the man some more. What’s a key worth if you don’t know what door to unlock. Theadas thought to himself. Theadas was about to loose sight of the Elf so he walked hurriedly down the steps and onto the shadow cloaked side walk that the man was traveling on. Theadas continued on the same pace to get a little bit closer to the Elf. They were almost near the centre of the Talos Plaza; Theadas could make out the outline of the dragon statue in the late night sky. The streets were empty, the only guards out were at the gateways it was a peaceful night. The Elf turned right; Theadas waited a couple moments then turned as well. As he did so the Elf’s hand slammed into Theadas’ face. Theadas fell backwards on to rear end; his cowl came off exposing a bloodied nose and a cracked lip. “Is you’sh followin meh?” The drunken Elf slurred his words as he studied Theadas. Theadas was in shock, he looked up at the elf. He could feel his face going white as he trembled. “N-n-no, no I am not.” Theadas said trying to regain composure. The Elf bent over and studied Theadas’ face closely. The smell of smoke and mead radiated off the Elf. Theadas was seventeen now and a young man, he had a beard coming in but still had some boyish looks in his face. The Elf stood up straight again, “You’sh youngins, you’sh ‘ouldn’t be out here at this time’sh of night.” The Elf exclaimed. Theadas sighed in relief. The Elf offered Theadas his hand and helped Theadas up. He looked down at Theadas and shook his head then turned and continued down the street until he reached his house. He looked back to where Theadas was still standing then entered his home. Theadas made a mental note of the location then set off to home himself, while licking his wounds.

WELCOME TO THE FANFICTION FORUMS MOONJESTER!

Woah, hey! This is good! I've enjoyed it and look forward to more. Only spotted some minor mistakes here and there. It could be spaced out more, so it makes it easier for the viewer to do their read like so:

Other than that, I found this quite the enjoyable read. It flowed nicely, and the post wasn't too long that someone would just be like, "TL;DR EL OH EL!" (Not that all long updates are terrible. I assure you, if your chapter was long I'd still read it.) and it wasn't too short that not enough was structured throughout. Keep it up, Moon, I'm looking forward to more of Theadas' story!
