[PROBZ] Walking on the Spot - NPCs

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 7:56 am

Is there anything anyone can remember that can make both male and female NPCs walk on the spot for say 3-4 seconds before they actually begin moving from the spot they started walking on (or even running, during the early thieves guild quests where guards are searching the waterfront, I have seen them run on the spot before actually running off)?

I have already been picking Surazals brain in the comments on Sensual walks on this, not because I thought his mod was related but because I think he is the most experienced with walk anims.

I do not use anything else which affects anims, currently, but have experimented with mods which can make sweeping changes (One of Colorwheels mods in the past) and wondered if I may have had a loose anim file lurking that I was not aware of causing the bug.

Or could it have been related to experimenting with Wrye Bash skeleton tweaks in the past.

So I did a complete un-install of all BAINs http://www.bild.me/bild.php?file=2878617Untitled.jpg, then de-activated Surazals mod to only leave behind anything loose that should not be there.

Before asking Surazal I also checked up on the ABomb which was only at 24% before I cleared it.

Wrye Bash did a good job, nothing left behind that shouldn't be. Also Surazals OMODs after De-activating left nothing behind.

Then did a slow re-introduction routine to see if the land sets have anything to do with this ... now back at a point where I can continue my game save without problems and Oblivion has not given any missing file warnings so everything that should be in place is.

NPC now only rarely seem to be afflicted, but something has changed - They now set off walking fine, but then when they are getting towards the end of their walk distance, they come to a walking on the spot state again, before they stop walking.

The only thing that has changed out of my install order is land textures which are currently vanilla, which has only led to changing when the walking on the spot happens, and decreased frequency of the occurence. So nothing conclusive unfortunately.

At least its not happening to 1 out of three NPCs now its more like 1 out of 6 when it occurs. Will give it a settling down period too before I go changing anything else....

- Unless anyone knows how to go for the jugular on this curiosity?

I've got the exact same problem. In my case, it seems to happen to all NPC's, when they want to start walking, not when they're coming to a stop. I'm pretty sure it evens happens when they're trying to run towards me to engage in a fight. I haven't done any Bash tweaks. I also don't run the mods you listed. I wonder if it's somehow related to the abomb.

This happens in my game occasionally. Actually it's happened to my character as well, I'd be trying to move but he'd just run in place. After a few seconds of mashing all movement directions and trying to jump I'd then be able to move. It used to happen to me more often than it does now, and I can't even remember the last time I got stuck like that, so it's pretty rare at this point. But I still see it happening to NPCs often enough. Not so much that it ruins the game or anything, but I've seen plenty of NPCs walking in place next to a bed, for example, apparently failing to lie down in it for a while. I see it pretty much anywhere, though I haven't really noticed it happening during battles. It seems to only occur after the NPC has stopped for some reason, like if an NPC is walking along without any intrusions they won't just suddenly stop moving forward and walk in place. At least I don't think I've ever seen that happen. Also, I want to say that talking to the NPC can sometimes get them moving after you end the conversation, though I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, as for the cause, I've maintained a suspicion about a certain mod(s) that I had installed right before I got stuck for the first time. I was installing shield- and 1h weapon-on-back mods. I have a pretty solid memory of playing around with the different mod options for putting stuff on my character's back, ultimately deciding that having shields on his back made him look too much like a turtle and sticking with one of the 1h weapon-on-back mods since then. I haven't ever disabled the mod to test my theory, though the weapons-on-back thing has kind of run its course so I'll probably go ahead and do that soon. It's entirely possible I was installing some other mod at the same time that caused the problem and I don't remember it now because I was focused on the stuff-on-back mods at the time, though I don't see anything that could be the culprit in your load orders, and neither of you guys are using any kind of stuff-on-back mods. It's just a theory that's probably incorrect, though I guess it could be pointing to some weird compatibility issue that can manifest via different combinations of mods, I don't know. But I guess I'll be able to rule out the very odd stuff-on-back theory before too long, obviously only helpful in my case, heh. Such a weird issue.

I do believe I found it.

Andalaybay - We both have AMB

Just had a careful look through AMB files if there are any anims ...

Meshes\Characters\_Male\idle.kf
Meshes\Characters\_Male\idleanims\stand1.kf

Those two files are not installed by anything else in my setup.

I manually deleted those two, rebuilt bashed patch, and I dont seem to have the problem at all now. So one of those is the culprit somehow causing a glitch in animation timing going from standing to walking or running.

Try deleting them (if like me you have the BAIN installer re-installing will not be a problem afterwards if this is wrong) and see if you can give me a Boooom Headshot :)

Getting late here so will narrow down exactly which one is the culprit tomorrow.

Hmmm. I'll give that a try. I remember when I installed AMB that there was a comment that the animations had been adjusted to make them look more natural with the new body meshes. Also, this is the first time I'd ever bothered installing them - previously I didn't... So you might definitely be on to something there. I think I'll reinstall without those anims and see if it fixes the problem. I'm using BAIN, so I just need to deselect the sub-package and anneal.

Yep your right, its the 500 idles sub-package, that makes it easy.

I saw that problem fairly often, long ago. Using the debug info from the console I saw that the stand1.kf animation was getting picked along with other animations. It didn't help be to delete the .kf file, but maybe it was also packed into some other BSA and I didn't notice. I made myself a little patch mod to disable the stand1.kf animation being picked as an idle choice and the problem went away. I'm sure that's not the best fix, but I really didn't care because stand1 isn't very interesting anyway. Maybe this info can help someone with more knowledge and interest sort out the real animation glitch. I'll keep an eye on this thread just in case because I love to get rid of those little "patch" mods I create whenever I find a proper solution.

Can anyone tell me the date and filesize for the idle.kf and stand1.kf files? Trying to figure out if I've got the same ones, and where they came from.

I've got 05/06/2007 for idle (that's dd/mm/yyyy) and 06/06/2007 for stand1. Haven't had a chance to test this yet - might take a bit.

Well I've got the same files then. I'll have to figure out where they came from because I'm pretty sure I've never installed AMB. And I can't remember what I might have installed around the time I was trying out the stuff-on-back mods. I guess I should wait until it's determined for sure that those files are causing the problems though, heh.

EDIT: Hmm! Apparently I downloaded AMB along with a few various Robert's Male-related things, the day after I had downloaded the on-back stuff! Haha, I guess that makes sense then. The only thing is, I can remember copying files to use RM v5, but I'm not using the esps for it or AMB. I'm not sure what other issues not using the esps might have caused, though I was pretty satisfied with the results just copying the RM files. It's possible I didn't even install anything from AMB and just used the animations as curiosity. I guess it would have been redundant anyway after having installed from some standalone RM v5 average body files. Haha, this is the kind of confusion that results when you install everything manually. It's awesome!

AMB is only a compilation of Robert's Male, so the files are probably the same. Did you ever install Robert's male?

I haven't fully tested it but my inclination is it's caused by AMB.
Currently playing with two characters, the one without AMB or any animation mods at all doesn't have this issue.
The other with AMB, Colourwheels sixy Oblivion Overhaul plus DMC Stylish suffer the same symptoms as your describing.
I've got a stable game so I really don't want to start experimentation to find out.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread though....

Yeah, if I'm remembering correctly I either installed from some other RM thing I downloaded or possibly from AMB, but either way I definitely ended up installing the various other things that come with AMB, like the animations. Having downloaded the on-back stuff the day before, I'm certain that I installed both that stuff and the body mod stuff at the same time, which is how I ended up thinking the on-back stuff caused the issue. So if it's not those idle animations causing the problems, I'll eat my hat!!!!!

Also I use http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=6386 http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21475 animation replacement packages and find them to be very nice and classy and without any of these issues. If you want something less flashy than the DMC stuff, they're definitely the best choices, I think.

It must be the .kf files included with Robert's stuff; I get the same problem as well. Are you saying that removing the new .kf files will eliminate the issue?

Yes, I had the same problem a while ago, and as I remember it, the problem was using those two animations from Robert's male body mod with a skeleton.nif that included the tail - such as the one included in Slof's mods. Delete the two animations, and the problem goes away (it did for me, at least).

I got an opportunity to play for a short time last night and the problem seems to be gone. Before I give Alt3n1ty a Boooom Headshot though, I need to go to a big city with lots of NPC's and make sure I don't have a mass performance of the moon walk going on.

For me, this happened with all NPC's - not just the ones with tails. I remember in particular the Castellon at Battlehorn (he's a Redguard) was very fond of doing the moon walk.

Roberts Male Body has a similar problem. The idles animation he's added can cause the problems that's been mentioned as well. Look in the same place as was mentioned for AMB.

AMB is only a compilation of Robert's Male, so the files are probably the same.

Yes, that would explain it then. I can't believe that hasn't been fixed yet, I ran into that problem ages ago. Much as I like Robert's work, he's not very good at fixing bugs that pop up. I ran into an issue with his female body and finally just stopped using it altogether because of it.

Oh, and the culprit is the idle.kf.

I wonder if the AMB guys would fix it if we reported it to them? They have fixed a couple of other issues, but I don't know if those fixes were just a matter of using a fix that someone else supplied. I'll report it in the Nexus comments for AMB and we'll see if there's any more work being done on it.

The problem needs to be fixed on Robert's end, that's where it's originating from. I left a post for him at the Nexus when I discovered the problem and nothing ever got done about it. That was years ago now.

Yeah well as I said, the guy that did AMB (Room207) did incorporate some fixes as well. I don't know if the fixes he included were ones he had done himself or if someone else provided the fix. Anyway I posted in the AMB comments thread. Sounds like Room207 is too busy now to fix it though... However if someone who knows creature animations wants to fix the file, I imagine he would include it.

Robert hasn't been around in years. Even the more recent versions of his male body mod were done by AlienSlof.

I have this goofy "walk in place" behavior as well and it was driving me nuts trying to track it down. I am using Roberts as well.
So... how do I get rid of this?

The idle.kf and stand1.kf animations were thought to be the culprits, but Belanos says it's just idle.kf. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but it should fix the problem. p.s. read the thread!!!!!

Now I'm wondering, what did those animations even add compared to the vanilla ones? I can remember being satisfied with it, but can't recall what exactly the difference was. Breathing or something?

I still find it funny I managed to associate the stuff-on-back mods with this issue because I happened to install it at the same time as RM.

Also ever since installing it I've completely ignored installing any special meshes tailored to the RM body I'm using, ha. I think it's so similar to the vanilla one that when I use armors made for the vanilla body I don't even notice any change in size or anything. I think part of the reason I've ignored most cosmetic body mod stuff is not wanting to have to worry about custom equipment mesh availability.

Yes, it looks like it's just idle.kf. Delete it from Meshes\characters\_male. If you installed AMB using BAIN, you can just remove the 500 sub-package.

I believe the animations were supposed to look more natural when using some of the Robert's body types. As I said, I have never used them before and it was only when I installed AMB with the BAIN wizard that I decided to give them a try.
