Wallbanging

This is kind of the point...

SD purposely wanted to nerf the snipers, to avoid every flocking to them and to avoid turning the game into a camping snipe-fest. The "sniper rifle" in Brink, is more of a support weapon, rather than a cannon of death. There role is to soften up targets for others to finish or to finish off softened targets. Yes, I'm sure lots of players will tweak their guns and abilities to make it as strong as possible, and behave like a traditional sniper rile, but for the most part, I expect players who use it, (properly) to be getting lots of assists over kills.

That probably would be pretty useless on COD - good thing this isn't COD.

What you fail to see is then what IS the point of a light rifle if there are no ranges that an assault rifle can't work picks on and a light rifle can?
Why the heck would you want a gun to purely get assists for when a rifle can do the same better at any range, besides like the furthest point possible on the map which is too situational for practicality?
That's the issue. It's rare to find a game where snipers are done right nowadays and don't get me wrong i don't mind them being [censored], but they are, well, [censored] in brink. Any game where a sniper is a two hit kill has massive maps for a sniper to work out (bf, planetside).
I'm just saying they are kind of pointless to add, its like the m249 in cs, why would you add it in the game? Waste of time and effort on their end.
Even if a light rifle could wallbang any material for 100% damage, i highly doubt people would complain about them if there are no cheaters.

The point is that they are still the most accurate, strongest, single shot weapons in the game, so killing with them is still very viable, especially when you factor in the different weapon mods and abilities players can have.

What you fail to see, is that there are no sniper rifles in Brink, so any preconceived notions you have, of how you "think" they should operate, or comparing them to sniper rifles in other games, is irrelevant and moot.

Finally, it's both funny and sad how people like you will complain about a feature in a game that 1) you haven't played and 2) hasn't even been released yet, and make your opinions sound as if tey are facts.

You know tat saying, "if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck." Well in this case, (with sniper rifles in Brink) it is not a duck.

Dude, a light rifle which has a scope and is bolt action seen in one of their videos, and they stated it's not a one shot kill. Pretty sure that's enough evidence for me. There is, like, no point or value for it...not one of the maps they have shown in ANY video have an area where an assault rifle wouldn't do just fine in...
Even if there were a few maps with noticably long areas, it's very situational and unpractical for common play given the maps shown in current gameplay.
Don't see what your coming at buddy, can you explain?

My point is, have you played the game? have you used the weapon? that's what I thought.

Lol what?
Dude, what is the difference if i tell you my Porsche can go 0-60 in 4.0, you've been told by engineers it does, you've watched videos of it doing it, but your saying, "NO it doesn't until i physically go in it and drive it"
It's the same thing man, a sniper that is bolt action, can't one shot people, and in maps where an assault rifle has the same utility, what is the point of it?

Reading comprehension = not your strong part...

I'm not saying that the rifles can't do what they can do, I'm saying, until you play the game, you can't simply right them off as "useless" because they don't operate like what you're accustomed to. You are taking small clips of gameplay (really small clips, since there is next to nothing, in terms of light rifle footage) and knowldege from other games, and using them as the basis for your complaint. Sorry if I seem a bit skeptical.

Guys, calm down. Otherwise the topic will get locked.

Concerning the subject:

Light rifle or AR of HMG, IT DOESN'T MATTER. Bullet penetration is confirmed to NOT be in Brink.

I have edited then deleted a lot of posts. Personal attacks are considered flaming on these forums and there are a couple of you who lost posts who will also find they have time off from here if it continues in any future posts.

Either continue the conversation in a civil manner or don't post.

Revo made a good argument, sometimes a total lack of penetration is really silly, especially with stuff like thin wood. Using penetration sparingly would make the game more immersive, but add too much and its just annoying.

As far as arguing whether short rifles are snipers, they are clearly not. As to people saying that light rifles need to be powerful, or else they will be out-gunned by assault rifles, that's kinda the point. Assault rifles are a medium player's main weapon, short rifles are a light player's main weapon. Short rifles are there for light players that want an accurate weapon instead of an SMG.

Short rifles fire much faster than the sniper rifles in most other games, do less damage (they aren't OHK even in the head), are more accurate from the hip, and just more versatile in general. If you wanted to call them a "Marksman's Rifle" I would find it hard to agree with you, but sniper rifles have little use beyond long shots. Snipers are built from the ground up to put a bullet where you want with little focus on anything else. Short rifles on the other hand are a semi-auto rifle that can be used to make long shots if you want to put a scope on it. They work perfectly fine without a scope.

You can see footage of the SR-93 based short rifle at 2:32 in the minds of brink video on the official page.

You can see footage of the DSR-1 based rifle at 2:03 in the dawn of SMART video.

Both clips are extremely short, though.

I wouldn't mind bullet penetration, but I won't miss it either, I sort of like the principle of being safe from bullets when I have a wall between me and a shooter.

However, shooting down the idea out of fear of aim bots is an entirely different issue altogether.

Woah completly misunderstood the title of this thread my bad...

I agree with you. I think short rifles will provide great additional fire when a light can get on the high ground and use his rifle to support the lower ground forces. I think SMGs won't serve lights on the high nearly as good as the short rifle.

Well, we're still talking about thin material only, not stone or concrete (which most of the ARK is made of).

There are no massive maps in Brink they are all relatively small. Also in what game are there no cheaters?

In a game like this, I think there should some sort of bullet penetration with certain weapons. Obviously there are more things to consider aside from which weapons you can do this with but if you see someone dive/hide behind cover, you should be able to expose them by shooting through that cover. Nothing too ridiculous like COD though...

This one one of his points - that the maps will be smaller, so using a single shot rifle that doesn't kill in one hit, would be pointless. What he forgets to understand, is that the light rifles aren't necessarily ALL bolt action - there could be some semi autos in there. Wat he also doesn't point out is how combos would work well with these weapons - pop them with the rifle, switch to secondary, finish them off.

The two short rifles in the game are based on the DSR-1 and the SR-93, both are bolt action. Short clips of them being used in game show that the SR-93 is more powerful but slower firing, but the DSR-1 acts more like a semi-auto, firing a lot faster than what I think most people expect, in one clip it looks like it gets about 2 shots a second.
