Walled Cities...

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:39 am

I fully admit that this may be just a nit-pick thing, but I still hate it. I mean, sure there will no doubt be a mod (thanks to those that pointed it out), but I hate having to wait for that.

the news has to be sketchy.....you don't WALL a city built in a cliff... I call Shenanigans.

That's what I'm wondering. You can fall or climb down into a cliff. How will they deal with that? Maybe it's one of the smaller 'bigger cities' and they won't wall that in.

Why?

It's called RAM. Consoles don't have a lot of it.

Not that big of a deal honestly, especially since it seems we'll be getting plenty of smaller towns that will be open.

Strange. On Morrowind the cities were opend yet it was on the consoles... And I was hoping one of the cities would get attacked by a dragon.

But the original Xbox was a lot less powerful than the 360. So I don't get it either myself.

It came straight out of Todd's mouth. He also said the walled cities could be removed for next-gen.

AI. Lots of objects with physics. Level of detail. There's a lot that has changed since MW, and many of those new features are memory-intensive.

I still wouldn't rule out a city getting attacked by a dragon, but if it's one of the major cities the event will probably be scripted.

Well atleast we wont have to worry about Walled Cities in TES VI. Still how will it work for markath side? Because I heard it was build in a cliff?

Basically the Vid was rationalizing them not waiting for next gen systems, saying all that it would really offer is more Graphics than anything.

I did not hear him say Skyrim doesnt have open cities, I heard next gen systems would allow for seamless transitions, graphics, speed etc etc....can anyone qoute exactly where he says seperate worldspace cities.

because again, you do not make a city in a cliff a seperate worldspace...

Not really. I think it's just one of those picky things that a vocal minority gets worked up about.

(Honestly, it's even less of an issue on PC, since the loading times tend to be faster - load screens really don't register much unless you've got a truly crappy system.)

Well, it's not about load times for me, I'm thinking about how it ruins any chances for Levitation or a "Jump" spell...

that's not really a big deal though...

Can we get a quote that confirms that cities are a completely separate cell? Maybe I just missed it, but it sounded like he meant a "loading wall" which is just an area that the player walks into which requires a brief loading (such as when you walk around the world in Oblivion and Morrowind and there's that occasional "Now Loading" pause.)

Ah I didn't think about the AI. That can be very CPU heavy.

I would imagine the dragon attacks much like the Mehrunes "phase" in Oblivion.

even if they did make it for PC first the difference wont be that dramatic, becuase they want to get the game to as many people as they can, so they wouldnt want the game to strain lower level systems

Not true. PCs can scale settings. When they make a game designed for PC first in this day and age, you can bet it looks insanely good. (Witcher2/BF3)

The cliff probably will be the main wall and you walk into it. Dwemer ruins were largely underground.

This is disappointing. :( Not that there are walls. Walls were a standard part of building a city until early modern times. But I find it a little challenging to immersion that cities are a separate world space. Even Mournhold in Morrowind felt a little sketchy. :(

Not every city is walled off. Todd states that larger cities will be walled which I personally don't mind because realistically a larger city would be more difficult defend and what better way to fortify it than with gigantic slabs of stone or metal.

The city will likely be inside the cliff, while the Dwemer ruins are sitting outside the cliff.

I fine with the cities having walls. It's that they are loaded in separate cells is my issue.
