Can we get a quote that confirms that cities are a completely separate cell? Maybe I just missed it, but it sounded like he meant a "loading wall" which is just an area that the player walks into which requires a brief loading (such as when you walk around the world in Oblivion and Morrowind and there's that occasional "Now Loading" pause.)

"So our bigger cities still have walls that load you ... but at the end of the day the experience is kind of the same, as you'll just be walking smoothly into that city, as opposed to clicking a door, waiting for a load, and then going in."

So yeah, I don't know. Sounds like it's not a separate cell at all to me, though maybe it just feels like it isn't but it is? Whatever, it was confirmed that dragons attack cities, so who really cares?

Some of you guys are really upset about such a forgettable feature. I've been playing Oblivion with the Open Cities mod for months and months and honestly, it's not that great.

In Soviet Skyrim...Walls load you?

people remember the main cities are 5 massive ohSh** worthy cities....all walled off...it seems...

Markarth must not be one of those Massive cities...

This still svcks..

what are Dragons going to come through the gates? or a predefined point in the sky? and then when I chase them down jumping over a wall I find myself falling into the games digital abyss because I was so caught up in following that Dragon I forgot I have to go through the gate first........

My guess is it'll be sort of like when the Oblivion gates open in the imperial city and Mehrunes attacks in Oblivion.

Slightly disappointing, but nothing mods can't fix. And since it's only the massive cities being walled off I don't really mind. Though I do hope the walled cities are huge.

I don't really know what's been said on the 2nd or 3rd page of this thread...but on the first page it seems alot of you don't know that all major cities will be open...meaning NO separate cells. Also I don't know where you guys are getting the idea of every city in Skyrim having a wall built around the entire city. Cause I for one haven't seen any proof of walls built around them. Clearly Markarth Side is built in cliffsides and obviously there are no walls surrounding it; the concept art of Whiterun doesn't have walls surrounding it; and from what we can tell in the gameplay trailer the cities don't have walls surrounding them either.

I must say I'm extremely happy about cities being a part of the open world.

I'm pretty sure Markarth is considered oneof the "massive" cities. The map in the GI concept art video lists 5 cities, Solitude, Windhelm, Riften, Whiterun and Markarth. Also, Markarth has a castle, and they've released concept art and screens of it and it looks pretty big.

Closed cities should have been expected, the tech that gave us Oblivion and Fallout 3 hasn't changed in that time. As long as there are multiple ways of entering cities, and dragons do attack, then I can wait for a mod. Still, Bethesda could do the decent thing and give the PC version open cities.

Yeah, all we've seen of Markarth is the castle section, not the rest of the city where the villagers live.

Yup.That would be the decent mature thing to do. But i'm noi really expecting them to do it.
Though it might make perfect marketing sense, I just loathe this childish if-we-can't-have-it-neither-can-you approach.

I would never run open cities cause it just murders my rig and it's not a pushover. The only way to have open cites without huge performance loss is to lose most of the lights and the clutter. The trade off isn't worth it.

Nah.. hate to say it but Beth is console dev and because they didn't start on PC then port to consoles no chance of happening.. Atleast Beth is nice enough to give mod tools unlike other console devs

Unless he's just svcking up to MS and Sony, the consoles are only holding the game back graphically.

People tend to forget that game developers are also in a business to make MONEY. The whole reason they are able to hire more and more developers, voice actors, etc. are because they expand their audience. It is a double edged sword but I think that the game will work out to be just fine and fun regardless.

It came straight out of Todd's mouth. He also said the walled cities could be removed for next-gen.

PC IS next-gen.

I hope Todd Howard is aware that RAMs are very affordable these days. That's a functionality problem more than graphics. If PC is getting any "love", I mean this is exactly the place for that love to manifest itself!

I'm sure it will be a great game. And I openly admitted to this probably just being something nit-picky. But none the less I strongly dislike it. But at least we can mod it.

you can expand more if you do it the easier way start from the HIGHEST settings working down.. instead of working on the Lowest settings and trying to get to the highest.

I guess you can say its easier to walk down a hill then it is to walk up a hill

Agreed. I wish they had the time to make almost separate versions for the consoles and PC with certain things like that altered.

There was that little second part of the quote where he said it wasn't like clicking on a door and getting a loading screen. He said you walk and it loads. I'm thinking it's more like when you're walking around in the world in Oblivion and Morrowind and the recent Fallouts and a new cell is hit. Small loading bar at the bottom of the screen with maybe an eyeblink of a pause and you just keep walking. No clickies, no seperate spaces, no screens, no worries.

you need RAM for that but the gpu or cpu will ultimately determine the quality of it, and those dont come cheap

depends on what you mean cheap? the DX11 cards no but even DX10 cards beats what is in the 360 right now. And unlike the console games out there atm most of the graphics are created by using the GPU rather then having everything on the CPU.

I'm hoping it's more like this... but I'm doubting it. We'll just have to wait and see.

They don't. If I didn't have a gaming console, I'd go to my PC. My PC is weaker than my PS3, so I would appreciate all the optimization I could get... including walled cities. Where do you suppose all the other PS3 and 360 players would go, while we're at it? They do make up the majority of gamers. There are also plenty of gamers who currently play on PCs not quite as capable as consoles or not much more capable, if at all, than consoles. Notice the settings options on the main menu of nearly all PC games ever made. The developers didn't make those for the heck of it.

On the topic of walled cities, so?

so you remove a load screen and a lot PC players cant play the game, sounds fair to me

really this just seems like something a mod can fix, and if your computer is good enough that you can handle a city without walls then the waiting time will be nothing
