Walled Cities...

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 9:20 am

So it's been confirmed from the interview here: http://www.gameswelt.de/videos/videoarticles/25709-The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim_-_Video_Interview_mit_Todd_Howard.html

Is this due to the technological limitations of the consoles? Any chance PC's won't have to deal with this crap? And, in my opinion, this is certainly crap. I hated that about Oblivion, all the cities had these massive walls around them, with loading screens. It was annoying, and felt pointless, aside from the technological issues that required the cities to be in separate cells.

Prob due to the consoles, just wait for the inevitable mod that does away with this.

Hasn't loaded for me yet, but does it say "walled cities" or "seperate worldspace"/"loading screen" in cities?

Loads in separate cells.

And is there even a mod that fixes this in OBlivion? If not I doubt there will be for Skyrim.

As much as I'd love to see the PC version get an almost unfair advantage over consoles in this instance, it's not going to happen. I doubt Bethesda would take the time to separate each of the cells after console development completes, and rewrite scripts for dragons, events, and such in order for them to fit within their new locations. Also, Skyrim is supposed to be nearly equal on all platforms.

I'm sure a mod will come along soon enough after release to open the cities up though.

That's odd. I'm not sure how they're going to deal with things like Markarth being in a canyon.

EDIT: There is indeed an open cities mod

I've always played on consol so I've never quite understood what the entire deal with this is. Walled cities are seriously a large issue? I'm not trying to be rude I'm just curious as to whats wrong with it.

Apparently there is a mod for Oblivion to put the cities into the "open world cell".

But still... I wish they would have waited for the "720"/PS4 now. Two games in a row now that the modders will have had to do something to make Beth';s games more PC friendly.

So... does this mean that dragons won't be attacking the cities since they're separate cells?

Separate cells =/= open world..

Last game I played that I can remember with an entirely open world was Gothic 1-3

It's not a big deal for me, but seamless transitions are always better.

There's not just one, there's two.

Technically, there's actually 3 if you count the "Toggle Open Cities" option for http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16513

Well thats good to know it can be fixed.

I still say they should have just waited for the "720"/PS4 though. I really hate this.

We'd be waiting at least another 2 years for that. I couldn't handle it.

Not really. I think it's just one of those picky things that a vocal minority gets worked up about.

(Honestly, it's even less of an issue on PC, since the loading times tend to be faster - load screens really don't register much unless you've got a truly crappy system.)

Unless he's just svcking up to MS and Sony, the consoles are only holding the game back graphically.

Why?

It's called RAM. Consoles don't have a lot of it.

Not that big of a deal honestly, especially since it seems we'll be getting plenty of smaller towns that will be open.

even if they did make it for PC first the difference wont be that dramatic, becuase they want to get the game to as many people as they can, so they wouldnt want the game to strain lower level systems
