"Walled Cities with loading" -> NO LEVITATE?

Post » Wed Dec 30, 2009 3:48 pm

No, we'll try to traverse the mountain and if we run out of "juice" we fall to our death. Assuming there's no slowfall spell. So, learn the mountains. plus you could add stuff in remote places in the mountains. And if you dont like it, or think its OPed, dont use it.

Fair enough. Also, what is your avatar?

I wonder how a dragon hunting the pc is handled when you go from wilderness to a walled city. Does it just disappear?

They've mentioned that dragons attack the cities when looking for you. I'm not sure if that means they can actually enter the city cell. They probably can.

Also, since we're talking about levitation, anyone else notice that dragons can fly?

When Oblivion came out I was really upset about losing levitation, but the game didn't really need it. I'd be happier with not feeling like a racehorse when I cap my speed, and actually having a reason to use those fortify spells. (For that extra boost to cross large distances.)

Well levitation would defeat the whole purpose of having rugged mountainous terrain in Skyrim.

The same way as fast travel defeats the purpose of exploring a beautiful world?

Ahem. One thing that I didn't like about oblivion was how very repetitive "exploring" actually was.

I won't miss it. Heroes floating around like morons? No thanks.
Yes, my whole problem with levitation is there not being any animation that would make it look decent.
And it would also kind of ruin the mountains in Skyrim.

Indeed, as pointed out before: It's very imbalanced. being able to escape melee enemies by flying away and then casting fireballs on them from the sky.. does not really sound as balanced as a dual wilding short sword user in the same situation without levitation.. now does it?

For the love of TES, why do so many people WANT TO LOSE features?!!! We should be asking for a greater amount of levitation accessible locations, giving that much more of a reason to try this cool feature. Apparently freedom of movement doesn't mean much until it's EXPERIENCED.

So, maybe the awesome features of spells like levitation, jump, slowfall, etc that change how you can move through the game should be given more emphasis and shown to the player (REGARDLESS of character build) early in the game rather than later. Maybe I'm crazy, just a suggestion.

LEVITATION- Another feature that puts The Elders Scrolls above other RPGs

If dragons can't enter a city cell then I will not be purchasing this game.

It's a must-have feature IMHO.

Yeah, in the same way that spoons defeat the whole purpose of pineapples...

For those that don't understand it when you combine a metaphor with sarcasm;
That is to say, mountains, like pineapples have no "purpose" they just are, and as such nothing people do or use can defeat their non-existant "purpose".

It does work for a Mage. Character development is up to the player. Why should a Mage player be stuck on the ground just because another player refuses to play a Mage? That's a very selfish & petty outlook. By the same token, a Mage could say why should you be able to protect yourself with armor & shield if I can't levitate?
Levitation- Mage defense
Armor & Shield- Warrior defense

Final Point- Not sure why so many people don't get this, TES is a single player RPG, where each player can creatively RP their character the way they choose. There is no PvP, so there is NO SUCH THING AS AN OP CHARACTER. It's up to you to decide how you want to play.

One of criticisms that seems to be quite common on this forum is that Oblivion was very flat and the fact that one could see the imperial palace from anywhere on the map made the world feel very small as a result. Bethesda has said that Skyrim will be a similar size and added that the mountain ranges will make the world feel much bigger. To get to some areas one will have to go over (or in some cases through) a mountain range. Therefore the mountains of skyrim serve a purpose in not only accentuating the rugged nature of the landscape and it's peoples but also in contributing to the scale of the world itself. I believe that the person you quoted was implying that levitation in Skyrim and would thus make the world feel as small as Oblivion and would make this effort on the part of the developer pretty much all for nothing.

Your metaphor is in no way relevant in this instance.

Until your super good at magical stuff, casting a levitation spell that will let you move quickly is almost impossible in morrowind

False. Boots of blinding speed + Savoir's Hide + Wizards staff and you can be flying around like crazy at level 2. Rather hard to get, but requires no magical skill.

They would just need to limit levitation: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1162427-npcs-and-limited-levitation/ and add no-fly zones around cities. I don't find the latter very likely, but It can happen.

Whatever happened though, they tailored the game to either utilize levitation or not, so i'm not too worried either way, but levitation would of been fun.

Since it was in Daggerfall and Morrowind, yeah, everyone knew there was a possibility right? we've just been waiting for it to get confirmed or denied.

Skyrim has always had mountains in TES lore, they didn't invent them just for TES:V. The mountains do not exist to make the world "feel less small", they exist because Skyrim is the most mountainous provence of Tamriel.

You can pretend the mountains are there for some other reason all you like, but the truth of the matter is if the developers really did just invent mountains in Skyrim for TES:V out of nowhere, with the "purpose" of making the world feel bigger, then they would have removed fast-travel to ensure it also didnt "defeat the purpose of the mountains".
