Wands In Skyrim

When I think wands, I dont go towards harry potter, I think more like http://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/index.php?title=Emission_Lightning_Wand. Powerful element laden tools that enhance your normal magic instead of act as a spell source on their own.

(ex, cast through the wand to give your spells a power boost)

Aren't wands already in the game? Didn't they show them in the dungeon shooting a ball of light to light up a dungeon? They might have others that can cast other spells as well

That looks more like a Rod, which is basically just a Manmade Staff. I'm all for You Description though, just not tiny and femetizing.

I hate the entire idea of wands to be honest. Why would magic users store up vast power in easy to use devices where anyone who could really hurt themselves gain access? If you consider wands simply a foci for magic, then why something you have to carry around in your hand that could easily be lost? If wands are just a battery of magic, then again... why something so easily dropped in the heat of battle. At least staves could be potentially used to block incoming blows. Nope, always hated the idea that magic users carrying around sticks in their hands. Maybe wands would be more like a substitute or crutch for old mages whose fingers are no longer nimble enough to perform dextrous incantations.... but most mages shouldn't need or want them.

general rule is, they enhance your magic by helping to focus mana. Downside? unequipping them drains your current mana to 0.

I will strike this point home... or flag the dead horse it probably is.

If I wanted to buy a Harry Potter game, I would go and do that. Staves do the job just fine, and wands just don't seem to fit the rugged feel of Skyrim. I don't even know how they would be implemented in TES

I would like a uber powerfull wand made from the horn of a unicorn witch will fortify and enhance all spell by 75%. http://www.valleyanatomical.com/catalog/images/CA02998%20-%20Narwhal,%20Tusk.JPG http://www.maltergalleries.com/archives/auction05/oct2005/lots/2327_1.jpg

Okay old people(IOW people like me) who play table top RPGs, go grab your AD&D copy of the dungeon masters guide. Now look down at the bottom right corner of the front cover. What goes along with the TSR symbol back then? Oh yeah a wizard with a wand.

Wands are and always have been awesome. The Elder Scrolls staves and if they add wands work a lot like D&D staves and wands so I am cool with it. You dual wield wands, you wield one staff.

The way that they implemented staves in Oblivion, as 'magical rocket launchers', was completely uninteresting.

The character I had the most play time on was a pure magic user, and he never used them in Oblivion because he could do what they could, only more effectively. If they operate in a similar fashion in Skyrim, I'll probably not be using them now either. The same would be true for wands if they were just smaller versions of a staff.

It would be far more interesting if they had magical instruments (staves, wands, crystal balls, etc.) which affected how the magic user could cast spells. For instance, adding effects to any spell cast, adding to a parameter of any spell (such as duration), or letting the magic user store magicka in the instrument for later use.

Yes. LOL at the Potter generation thinking that they invented wands. When I think of wands, I think of Willow.

I would like to see wands and staffs for that matter provide "equipable perks" To enhance the spells you use, rather than casting there own spell.

Something we agree on lol.
Well, I'm in the age group of the potter generation I guess, but I really don't think of that when I think to wands, willow was a good movie, and honestly, there are plenty of places I think of wands that don't involve Harry Pothead and the Prisoner of a Purple Van.
While people also talk about wands being useless, they are much smaller and easier to manage for the physically inept wizard than your typical person-height staff. Plus, oblivion staffs were just guns that shot magical bolts.
Staffs are better off acting as a power source, or Morrowind style, but best as an amplifier.

Nope. Sorry, but The Elder Scrolls is not the wand-wizard-type of fantasy.

I'm not totally opposed to wands in the broadest sense, but I don't think Harry Potter or magician style wands belong alongside armour, claymores and battle axes.

Skyrim - home of the Nords - especially, is probably not the best TES setting to introduce something as dainty as a magic wand.

I think the option should be there. I probably wouldn't use them, but mages could use some other tools besides staves.

Sure. They could be like the magely equivalent of using a dagger instead of a broadsword.

I have no idea why people assume that the concept of using wands as a magical catalyst of sorts comes from Harry Potter

At any rate I'd probably never use them cause staffs look way cooler but I wouldn't mind if they were in of coruse

I don't know the history of wands when it comes to fantasy games but magical wands or rods have been in art and writings for thousands of years. Greeks, Egyptians, Norse, Celts and countless others. I think because Harry Potter made them "mainstream" people look at them as childish.

So I'm for having wands in the game.

There are one handed staves now correct?

what's the difference? practically?

I think "wand" sounds.... cliche and extremely cheesy. I'll take a staff over a wand any day of the week.

I have never, and will never, like the idea of wands. Tiny little magic sticks that a tiny weenie of a "Wizard" uses.
