Wands in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 9:37 am

Wands just don't match the non-childish attitude of TES.

uh, No. Again, people that attribute wands and scepters to immature fantasy or Harry Potter, must be kids. I remember having wands in P&P D&D. If you think wands=Harry Potter, you must be from the Potter generation. Circe must of been a Potter character then huh? Gandulf is said to of used a wand against the goblins of the Misty Mountains and their Wargs. His name is Northern Mannish for "Elf of Wands". Another Potter character I guess?

I think wands/staves or whatever should play some sort of a role in actually aiding magic based characters.

Why use a “Fireball” staff if I can already cast that spell and I wont even gain any xp in destruction? Its like an archer using some “arrow” wand that shoots an arrow without benefiting his marksman skill. What good does that do? There were a few fun ones, but in Oblivion, I was always better off with a sword over some staff in combat.

Have them add damage bonus’s to spells that you cast, or just boost your magika or…something thats actually useful to a mage.

I don't know exactly what you're talking about but I'm sure they will let you quit the game.

That thing with the brooms where they seemed to chase that weird ball thing.

i guess wands can be faster casting/weaker damage versions of staves...

Also they could enhance speed up ect spells

Exactly! They shouldn't act like staves. They should enhance a mage's ability to cast spells (though my suggested way of doing this is different from yours, they both work).

Once again I think they should enhance spells so you also get exp from them.

I like this idea. There is room for both wands and staves. Wands can be one handed so you can use two. Staves ,on the other hand, can be stronger then wands, but require two hands.

P.S. Is that really the right way to spell staves?

yeah most of us know wands were used way before harry potter, we usually mention harry potter when speaking of wands, because nowadays harry potter are most known for using wands...

I dont really see a reason why not to put them in. They should have some sort of possitive/negative effects though, not just a weaker verson of a staff. They shouldn't just be put in because a few people wanted them, they should be put in because they are useful.

The core proposition of the OP is a really good idea. I actually didn't care much for the way that staffs worked. So much so that I used them as a backup on mages and was much more likely to use a dagger with a helpful custom enchantment and soul trap. Which is lame because any character could use a staff in the same fashion, even the 0 intelligence Orc barbarian.

I'd rather them be called Scepters instead of wands for reasons I explained above.

Harry Potter didn't invent magic wands. They're pretty much just smaller, lighter rods/staves. If those fit in TES, why not wands?

Calling them rods might be good. They would still be one handed but would be about the size of a short sword.

That's a staff in your picture lol.

When it's held by two hands, is as wide as your fist, almost as long as you are high and has some sort of ornament like a skull, horns, wood carving, statue or similar at the end of it. It's a staff.

Yes, I'm aware. That's why I said wands/scepters/whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-them-since-people-seem-to-have-a-problem-with-the-word-wands should act differently than staves, and thus would not become redundant.

I dont believe there is a precedent for this in the Lore, I could be wrong, but I dont believe ive read about the use of wands anywhere ever.

Simply because there is no precedent for wands in the lore does not mean they couldn't exist. Bethesda creates new lore with every game.
