Wands in Skyrim?

Post » Mon Dec 13, 2010 1:53 am

I'm interested in seeing fast but weak ranged weapons for more mobile character types, we didn't really have the option in to in Oblivion, and Morrowind only had it available through casting through enchanted items which allowed insane amounts of DPS I might add.

I personally would like to see semi automatic crossbows, but that's just me ;p.

I see no problem with wands. I feel like they should enhance magicka in some way just like how I think staffs should enhance magicka casting in some way.

The core proposition of the OP is a really good idea. I actually didn't care much for the way that staffs worked. So much so that I used them as a backup on mages and was much more likely to use a dagger with a helpful custom enchantment and soul trap. Which is lame because any character could use a staff in the same fashion, even the 0 intelligence Orc barbarian.

Exactly.

They’re supposed to be for mages, but are mostly useful for non-mages.

Wands would be cool, but i think they should be bigger than the ones in Harry Potter. Instead of wands maybe one-handed sceptres that permanently boosts magicka or attributes. but attributes may be deleted .. idk

I was thinking why not have really low powered wands that use mana so that the mage can actually use some sort of staff that can be used over and over again.
What do you think?

So, let's put this in a list so people will understand it.

Wands do not =
  • Harry Potter
  • WoW (has both staves and wands)
  • Wands have been around since before either of these things were even thought about
  • Having wands doesn't = removing Staves. Both can exist.

I personally don't care. If they do add them it would be kinda neat but I've always preferred my characters in games that have both to use a staff. So, I wouldn't use them if we had them. But I'm sure plenty of people would

Absolutely not.

Still, it's a better idea than guns...

I want tomes, my D&D character channeled his magic through them. :whistling:

I don't have a problem with wands, though one handed staffs are so much cooler.

That thing with the brooms where they seemed to chase that weird ball thing.

Quidditch.

On-topic, still not really feeling the whole wands thing. Mage with wand and shield, great- if we can get a good well-done classical-type magic system where metal armor screws up your casting something fierce, and then with the new perk system Battlemages and the like can choose perks to overcome it.

I adore wands, I don't what's with the Harry Potter jokes though, J. K. Rowling wasn't the first person to use wands in fiction

No. Actually. Not really.
If you had read the thread, almost all suggestions were for wands to act completely different than staves, altering the wielder's ability to perform magic, not casting imbued spells as staves have done since Oblivion. Thus, modding staves to look like wands would simply get you a small staff, not what is being suggested throughout this thread.

Idk about wands in Skyrim..i mean yeah wizards use staffs and wands but more along the Elder Scrolls plot is staffs and hands instead. I wouldn't mind seeing wands in Skyrim tho it would be something new.

First off, wands in the game would be awesome.

Second, I agree that items like these should act differently than they did in, say, Oblivion.

They would serve best as spell casting aids, so that you gain a benefit from having one in hand while casting spells (presumably to use as a focusing item).

Why stop at wands? They should add special tomes, wands, staves, skulls, etc. Various items could provide different bonuses. Or you could determine the bonus through enchanting, and the physicality (and magical capacity) of the items would be the main trading point.

They could have some great effects, like:
-Enhancing the casters magicka pool
-Providing a boost to spell durations
-Providing a boost to spell power
-Adding additional effects to certain spells

To name a few. . .

Wands were in daggerfall, but they had no use. But I'd like to have them in the game just as a function like a staff, except it's a tiny stick so it really won't be used as a weapon. Just more of an aesthetic thing.

Imagine a mage dual-wielding two spells with the wand acting as a spell enhancer. He fires lighting out of his free hand and and a fireball out of the other and the wand gives it area of effect damage so it explodes.

Thank you! Damn, I combed through every page to see if anyone remembered this. Wands are a part of TES, just... not a very big one. They still existed though.

second, you dont need to have the pretention to decide when a discussion is closed. when the discussion is closed people will stop by themselves to stop talking about it
