How about the madness axe from the Shivering Isles? I think it looks pretty good? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:Madnessweapons.jpg
You can have them made at any level. The ones you get made at level 23+ are the strongest.

Nord vs orc? I would forget about stats and just go for the looks and image you want. Maybe review the lore on each of these great races. I would take orc.

My advice would be to get yourself a Fine Steel Battle Axe (we are talking battle axes here, right?) and use a Transcendent Sigil Stone to enchant it. With such a stone you could take your pick of the following enchantments:

Absorb Health 25pts (40 uses)
Absorb Strength 25pts (30 uses)
Absorb Fatigue 50pts (50 uses)
Damage Health 30pts (45 uses)
Disintegrate Armor 50pts (30 uses)
Fire/Frost/Shock Damage 25pts (70 uses)

Personally I like Absorb enchantments better than Damage enchantments, but your mileage may vary. The point is that with a high enough magnitude of enchantment the base damage of a weapon becomes irrelevant.

+1 for the "enchant one you like the looks of" idea, but I'd use a Grand or Black Soul gem, so I could include a bit of Soul Trap with the damage and enable recharge as you go (Azura's Star helps). You can also combine damage and weakness (and the Soul Trap) all on the same weapon.

The other plus to doing your own enchantment at an altar is the selection of the damage levels and durations to suit your own style. If you alternate blocking and hitting, you might want longer duration of a lower damage to get a higher total. If you're swinging continuously, you want the full damage done before your next hit. When you use a Sigil Stone you don't get any choices.

In spite of the name http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=23150 offers up two good, realistic axes.

I agree. It's the same with swords too - I love the designs upto Silver. All the more powerful ones look gaudy and over-the-top to me.

I've always liked more http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/images/3731-4-1192744461.jpg than axes. IMO, they're a much more demoralizing weapon :)

That makes three of us (and there is bound to be more). Although I do like Elven daggers and shortswords very much as well.
