I want class restrictive quests

Post » Fri Sep 23, 2011 1:38 am

I would love to see quests that can't be done by every single type of character. It never made sense that a melee character could become the leader of the Mages' guild. Or that my mage could command the highest seat of honor in the Thieves' guild. I want guild specific quests to utilize the skills you would actually need in that guild- Mages' guild quests should involve magic, thieves' guild should involve sneak, lockpicking and pickpocketing, and there shouldn't be cheats around it! I would even like quests that require certain levels of skills.

I would also like to see this in the world because it encourages me to go back and play another character if I want to see every piece of content. I want replay value and this would offer it.

What do you think?

edit- class was a poor word choice. I mean skill, as in destruction, conjuration, lockpicking, etc. Sorry!

Sorry for using this type of argument, but...

"If you don't want to your melee character to be the Archmage... Don't do Mage's Guilds Quests... Or stop after doing the Recommendations."

But I agree that more "restrict" (In the "Skills" regard) Main Factions quests can be a good thing.

Aren't you one of the folks there are like Halellujah I can play how I want, no more "restrictive" classes?

just an inquiry I could swear you were.

as for stopping people from doing certain quests. Im sure thats gone with the wind since theres nothing labelling the character now. you still have RS giving you what it considers "good or Bad" for you so theres that. think of it as, ...wel that.

That's a perfectly legitimate argument to make. However, I think a little restriction is a good thing. I'm one of the people that likes the idea of making us use an alchemy station- it not only adds 'immersion' (god is that overused now) but it adds another layer of complexity/strategy to the game. I think of this as another way of doing that.

There are many complaints on the forum of game changes they feel will streamline or 'dumb down' the game. I look at certain types of restrictions as making the game more challenging to play.

I try to be as positive with all the changes as possible :P

And sorry, class is probably a poor word choice to use. Skill level then.

Well since Skyrim has no classes and you can be a Jack of all Trades, you'll be able to do all quests in one playthrough. But, you should have to be skilled in Magic to pass through the ranks of the mages guild.

What bothers me is that you can join conflicting factions, such as the Thieves' Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. Even though membership is secret, it is still very contradictory.

I agree that non-magic characters should not be able to become head of the Mages Guild (like in Morrowind, where you had to have certain skills to advance)...and in OB, if you weren't a stealthy character, becoming the head of the thieves guild was all but impossible. Also the Dark Brotherhood was A LOT easier with a stealthy character.
Fighter's Guild shouldn't be restricted like that, as it's basically just mercenary work.

Other than that...it's gonna be hard to class-restrict quests as there are no classes. But with the new radiant story thing...I think we'll see quests adjust to the way you play, so should have the same effect.

From my experience with Oblivion I can conclude that TES is about making a sandbox that you can dink around in without a world that responds much to your actions and personality. Heavens forbid a game should react to how you play it. TES for boring worlds all the way!

Don't play it then?

I really have a hard time understanding why people who seem to so clearly loathe the series want to talk about it on a forum for the game.

I love your civility Morgueanna. :foodndrink:

While I agree that some restrictions can be a good think that actually "adds" to the game. We need to put a line where those "Restrictions" don't conflict with someone elses "Freedom". The Main Guilds could use some restrictions, at least for the top ranks, but they should be join-able by every type of character.
(I love the new concept of Alchemy too.)

Even though its true that it might give some replay value to some, wouldn't that hurt the overall premise of the game? Do what you want, be who want? Theirs already radiant story in it, and character generation which makes the game itself, not only the playtrough, dynamic.

Anyway, doubt its gonna happen, since the skyrim isn't even relying on character classes anymore or anything close to it in general. If you want skyrim to have some limits, then create them yourself.. or mod it to suit your needs.

There is also the choice of simply making your character actually good with the skills that are used in whatever type of quest you are going to do.

But then again that also does seem sorta like what the OP is saying anyways.

where did he state that he loathes the series?

Radiant story does that in a sense.... kinda that but as far as Im concerned its just another aspect that makes the world revolve around there player were it could have been put to use in other areas

we've already been told about the fact that the games missions will be tailored in certain ways for our character so I think everyone'sm missions will be unique to them...
I can't wait to see how the game thinks I'm playing - I love trying to figure out algorithms like that.

Yes, although thats not Beths direction anymore.

True, unfortunately.

Guilds seemed like just another story line than an actual organization in Oblivion. No matter who you joined, no one really seemed to care or judge you based on your allegiances. I would really just love some people outside of guilds to react differently to me, and to also give me some reason to advance in rank. When the most important thing is advancing the guild's story, like it was in Oblivion, then rank is not important to me. Making some skills a requirement for advancement makes promotions more of an achievement.

I don't know. Somewhere around the part where he says that the main attribute of the series is "boring worlds".

But maybe he loves boring and I'm just putting words in his mouth.

No thanks. I'd like to get a feel for everything no matter what I'm playing as. I wouldn't mind if the quest or reward differ based on your class like say you do a quest for the Argonians and if you yourself are Argonian you get a special Argonian weapon or something.

I liked being in all the guilds in Oblivion.

Yes! I think you voiced it better than I could. I want to see the impact of my choices, and a major choice for many of us is which factions with which we align ourselves. I hope the radiant AI is smart enough to use them in a meaningful way in Skyrim.

It will come down to what all Radiant story telling entails. it could make for a tailored experience, although Im not sure how the game is going to differentiate a insert unique class from a insert unique class. Or it could be something much more linear like an idiot proof-er for killing NPC quest givers.
