And Bethesda taking design cues from Square Enix would be like Lamborghini taking design cues from Lada.

Yeah "square enix"... not "Squaresoft"
i think it's like a young person who is still in his prime taking advice from a old geezer who has seen lots of action but is past his prime.

When FFVII came out in 1997, it was the best RPG on consoles around. nothing open-ended on a console (like TES) really existed yet and FFVII was just fantastic. I'm sure there are some things that can be extracted from Square's old games that can make Elder Scrolls better.

i mean, as i said before, Bioware did this "super hard boss" thing before with Baldur's Gate 2, and it was fun.

Ya. I would rather that it there is not something like "WARNING: EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!", rather, a tablet or something outside of the room it is in.

Out of your suggestions, I would like something around the lines of the extremely powerful warrior. It like the idea of another humanoid in the game who can nearly match the Dragonborn (assuming that he is lvl 50).

I managed to kill it before it even reached me. In fact, I managed to kill it before its alert response even triggered. It died literally instantly.

I even saw someone kill it instantly with only one Holy Hand Grenade while in Sneak mode.

The Realms of Arkania trilogy would like a word with you.

EDIT: Ooooh, consoles. Sure. They've always been limited.

I would love stumbling upon some mad Lich at the bottom of a remote cave who becomes irritated by your intrusion on its privacy but instead of fighting you he goes invisible follows you around Skyrim conjuring super powerful undead creatures at random until you find a way to banish it. There would be no 'quest' in your log and you would have to research books all over and in the end you take the gathered ritual materials and travel back to its lair and have to defend yourself while performing the ritual. The ritual should involve placing items in specific locations, casting 'spells', and moving in specific patterns at the correct times. The reward for all of your trouble is a skull placed into your pack that randomly insults you as you go about your business and can not be removed from your inventory. Activating the skull will conjure a temporary random super undead minion that is frenzied (a danger to both you and your foes) once per day.

That sound neat? A reward that is unique, interesting, and provides a means of entertaining me when I get bored!

Not entirely in the scope of this thread, but an interesting idea nonetheless. I wouldn't want that personally, unless you know you are gonna be bothering a mighty powerful lich before you do it. and still i'd be disappointed i just dont... you know...fight it.

and i would want to be able to drop the skull

Hmm... perhaps you hear the Lich whispering warnings about trespassing upon unholy ground that become more dire as you enter the heart of its lair?

The reward could be disposable or a spell to summon the Lich once a day, but he will be frenzied so kind of an 'oh crap!' spell.

EDIT: The ritual encounter should be a really tough fight since you have to perform the ritual under pressure. I am thinking of waves of undead. 1 super tough minion per wave. It would be like a gauntlet I guess, maybe.

EDIT2: Since you have to run around his lair for the ritual perhaps there would be 1 baddy after each completed event. The lair could be sealed once you initiate the ritual so that you have to do the whole thing at one time.

I dont, that would be pointless. Plenty of people dont even go through the main quest.

I like that idea for summoning all together. In Baldur's Gate there was a chance that the most powerful summons would turn on you, and i thought that that was pretty cool.

The whole point of super bosses is that they are completely optional.

so because not everyone does the main quest this wouldn't have a point? i don't get it. the main quest has nothing to do with this.

the point is that it'd be awesome and A LOT of people will play it.

Er, the title says: an enemy almost impossible to beat outside the main quest. Inferring you would basically only be able to beat said enemy during the main quest, even if it was an optional 'boss' that had nothing to do with the MQ. So how was my post invalid?

I dislike the idea of giving super gear as rewards for the 'super boss' battles because once you defeat them you would not need the items... I would prefer stuff that extends game play like adding new arena opponents for you to battle once a week as an example.

outside of the main quest... meaning it's not in the main quest or having anything to do with the main quest.

did you even read the OP?

Yes and it was terribly worded. Id change it to make it more clear. Or perhaps just the title.

I always thought once you finished the main quest in Morrowind that Vivec was always a decent challenge to kill and soultrap. Then of course, make some epic enchanted item named Vivec's Tears or something to that effect.

paralysis and an absorb health weapon can make easy work of Vivec. I hope in Skyrim there won't be any loopholes like that.

even once for Gaenor, i summoned loads of creatures and they distracted him, while i just shot arrows from afar. i just had to sit back and watch him die

Hell, several. But still a RARE, RARE encounter. What I also don't want is having to fight for five real world minutes just to kill a goblin chieftan when my character is level 35 plus the way I often found myself having to do in Oblivion.
