Want to host a modding workshop?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 7:03 pm

I have realized that it would be very beneficial if we spread the effort around when it comes to presenting these workshops. I would dearly love to have people who can and will do so.

Specifically, I would like a variety of volunteers from various timezones. That way it won't be such a burden on the presenters to schedule at an odd time, nor a difficulty for those to attend when they are held at odd times.

Don't hesitate to volunteer even if you know somebody who may have a bit more experience in a particular area than you is presenting a workshop. For example, I would be very grateful for anyone who would like to teach a scripting workshop. You don't have to be a Cortex, MadMax, or GhanBuriGhan to teach people how to declare variables and structure a script. ;)

Those who agree to help out will be given full access to the workshop directory on my personal server. This is where we have uploaded resources, such as screenshots and sample esps, for use during the workshop. I am also working on redesigning the workshop pages so that updating the links and the current workshop information will be simplified and somewhat automated.

So let me know if you'd like to help. I would really appreciate it!

I'm currently a bit busy with future releases for my Oblivion quest mod, and there's a lot going on in the real world as well, but I would like to give an Oblivion quest modding workshop some time, if that's possible.

Cool I'd listen to that. Which is saying a lot as I don't even listen to myself.

Unfortunitally im not experianced enogh for scripting so thats now why im posting here :) I was wondering if you have a good varity of exterior moddeling I would really like to listen to one as my greatest weakness with the CS is exterior moddeling. I always end up with to much curves to less trees ect. I would really like to be able to make exterior moddeling becuase as of now all my mods take place on a really small island with no more then half a cell dedicated to it :) http://s886.photobucket.com/albums/ac69/Wolf3131/?action=view¤t=3333.jpg anyways is their many of these?

I'll do another dialog workshop if there's enough interest in it.

I'm all in for any type of workshop, be it OB or MW. I'm thinking that I need to start catering some of my endeavors to include OB as well. ;)

I guess I could present some sort of script I have in my mind.. I'll let you know when / if I'm ready for that. The script may not be of universal use, but I think it's always good to learn how-to and then try to do something else yourself.

Yes...and no. I'm actually working on completely revamping the workshop site. As it is, it is something that I just slapped together. I am making something that will post the countdown timer automatically (and with the correct time zones!) It will also have admin tools that the presenters can use, and hopefully automate the task of putting up the transcripts.

Just a note here that the Workshops are not abandoned. After the transcript of the last few were lost, I decided that I needed to greatly revamp the entire system. As it was, the whole thing was just cobbled together in a few hasty moments. I've been working on an actual system that will automatically update the display page with scheduled workshops, presenters will be able to schedule workshops and submit ideas for approval, and the *stupid* countdown timer will be automatic. And the best part is that the transcript and resources will be made available automatically once it is all over.

So the offer still stands: anyone who wants to present a workshop is definitely welcome to.

One of posters stated, that help with exteriors would be nice... Well.. I don't have too much free time, but I could try and teach about Interiors and Exteriors. When I first started a mod, it took me quite a long time, to understand how to build interiors and how to connect them with the exterior world. I would be happy to help. :)

A quick question, would this be like an in person thing or would it be a video chat type of thing. Because if its the second I wouldn't be opposed to doing an interiors workshop for both morrowind and oblivion...I would just have to brush up on my skills.

Fliggerty - I really appreciate the modding education work you promote

As I have timezone issues can i please make a suggestion/request

I learn primarily by watching and then imitating what I see - written instruction for some bizarre reason takes 5x as long to penetrate my consciousness.

If possible I'd really like to see some videos on modding - not basic ones like how to build a house or place an NPC but a little more advanced

Some help I'd like is:

Tools
How to clean a mod using different tools
How to use EE
Using all the features of Mash - I'm sure I use less than I could
How to install and use MGE

Animation
How to add an animation that contains various sequences and get the idles to play either randomly or on command

Scripting
Ah anything on how to efficiently write a script but listening to how to write it and seeing it tested in game would be helpful

On a very selfish personal note I'd very much like to know how to set my character on a platform and revolve the platform to create a cinematic effect - I know there is such a script in the MWSFD but to see a step by step video guide of how to do it would be so valuable as a resource

With videos - if there could be a chance to ask additional questions on the process being described that would be great

Rather than just be a participant I'd be happy to contribute to any catalog even though it is likely the only thing I could offer is how to make a face which is hardly groundbreaking modding :)

I heartily agree with all of this: the workshops are a wonderful initiative (I'm so sad I managed to stay awake long enough to take part in only one workshop).
The last time I tried EE, I messed up my esp badly, a workshop on the EE would be great: I just keep hearing what a great tool it is.
How to apply animations and play them would be fantastic (I can just about make an NPC sit, forever)

I diagree with you on 1 point Illuminel: I would love a worshop on how to make faces, really :)

It isn't complete yet, but anyone can feel free to reference or utilize my comprehensive exterior modding tutorial on TR's website, in any way they want. I had initially planned to lead a workshop on exterior modding, but I've seen run almost completely out of time.

I've given thought to video workshops, but that's an entirely different beast in terms of server/bandwidth resources required and implementation. And most of the free services out there I've investigated don't allow for recording/playback, or are otherwise too inflexible. I may look into it a bit further at some point in the future, but until then I'm focusing more on polishing what we have done.

Thanks to bhl who sent me some of the past transcripts that I've had trouble locating. (Your messenger is disabled or something?)

Oh well - pictures are as good as videos :)

I'd like to learn about moveworld - there's a script in MWSFD that uses it for a cinematic sequence - seeing as i'd like to do some machinima in Morrowind at some time I'd really like to learn how to create some camera crane like effects by placing the player on a surface and rotating it either 360 or doing some pull back shots - I know this can be achieved using leviation however moving the player smoothly in game is not always easy.

I have diffiuclty understanding how to get cell reference positions for sending NPC's to locations so I think that would tie in with this - but understand it may be a little too specific for a workshop

Well, I've given it some thought... I'm willing to run a workshop on how I create exteriors, as I have some time over the next couple of weeks to plan and host one. However, I've not attended any previous workshops myself, so I'm not sure how exactly they are run. I'm sure there are better people than me that could do it, but I figure I've got the time, and am more than happy to provide the service and share with fellow modders my understanding and experience with the CS.

But anyway, I'm happy to give a workshop a go. Just on building something small like a little island. Shaping the terrain, vertex shading, and detailing etc.

Let me know if you'd like me to do one. :)
