WANT MOAR FREESPACE!

Post » Fri May 15, 2009 9:41 am

FreeSpace 2 was an amazing game in so many ways. Seeing a big FreeSpace logo in a prominent spot on the gamesas homepage brought a big smile to my face. Any chance that more work will be done on this amazing property now that gamesas is back?

That depends, naturally, on how financially viable it is for gamesas. Sadly it seems that space sims have taken a back seat to FPSs and RPGs, since the glory days of TIE Fighter and Wing Commander, but who knows? Maybe it just takes a really good game to launch it back.

The best thing to increase the possibility of another Freespace game is to spread the word around, make it known there's a demand, and be supportive of the people who are paying for the thing to be made.

2 things

If a FS3 is made by gamesas, I would buy it for sure.

And if they advertised it a lot as well, I'm sure that loads of people would buy it also.

There's no reason why you couldnt make a freespace fps spin off (though a sequal woud be cool).

You're a marine and have to board ship and fit in zero g
You get to fly your ship but get shot down, you then need to find your way back to a base on foot etc...

ahh who am I kidding, I'd rather a Freespace 3 game. But there would be lots of other options for a story line, including restablishing contact with earth, even a free trading aspect might be cool. Image

As I said in another thread, I'd like to see a Starfleet Command-like game in the Freespace universe. :) The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

I'll say this: If gamesas commissions Volition to make Freespace 3, then it should be along the same lines as 1 and 2. Adding more features like FPS combat and capitol ship control would only distract the attention to the only important part of the game - flying as a fighter pilot. Those extra features would only make it worse, unless the fanbase made it so :v: could focus on the game itself.

And unfortunately, I don't see how they could make FS3 without killing the SCP, unless they made it as a mod for FS2. Which I wouldn't be opposed to (making a mod, not killing FSO).

I'm not saying they should add such features to FS3 itself, but they could certainly make a capital ship control spin-off set in the FreeSpace universe, akin to ST:SFC, aside from the sequel itself. The Vault - Fallout Wiki * Fallout Online * Fallout IRC Channel * Fallout: New Vegas

Another Freespace - cant imagine all the possibilities. I tried to play X3 Reunion but you can't compare those titles. Freespace and Freespace 2 are legendary.

Add planet jumps, atmospheric flights, more simulation-like physics, free world, ship mallfunctions that can [for example] disable your reactor for a while and you drift in dead space , "side quests", capital ship controll anc crew manager, add some strategy elements like space shipyards more pilot-pilot interaction, some kind of "tactics development tool" where you can determine how your or other wings react when certain things happen (example - auto "cover me" if there are 2 or more ships on my tail], for higher rank officers possibility to create own missions within the storyline, by determining the goals and preparing a short briefing, add wing management, where you choose [with proper rank] pilots in your squad, and every pilot has a different role to play in the story. Bring back the Ancients, bring all the goodies :)

It's a bit like Starcraft in that it needs little more than a general update to bring it to a 21st-century standard.

Throw in some atmospheric/surface elements, add some dynamic damage handling to the ships, set the story around the return to Earth and you're done.

I thought about leaving your fighter, but I can't see how that's going to add to the game at all. Walking around on foot really isn't the point of Freespace. Running a capship should perhaps be supported for MODs, but again I wouldn't put it in the campaign because that's not the point of Freespace either. EVE already has that one covered.

There really weren't any significant problems with gameplay at all. Maybe the weapon balance needs reconsidering but that's about it.

There are already stand alone games made with Freespace 2 engine. Wing Commander, Babylon 5 and others have each their own build. Is a bit hard to understand how to install them, but they are extremely well made.

Why will this kill FSO? They're a modding community. They can now go mod FS3.

And yeah im sick of just being a fighter pilot. I want to be a cap ship admiral

It's nice to see that someone else has also noticed the rather strong visual resemblance between EVE and Freespace. I think that there's something to be exploited here. If gamesas could market Freespace 3 as EVE for the FPS player, it would help sales a lot. EVE is widely known even among gamers who don't play it, and it looks cool enough (as in graphics and art), for many people to give it a second look. I hate MMOs and even I've given EVE a second glance because it looked so nice (and so much like Freespace).

This could even give rise to a weird online crossover genre where some players command fleets and other players fly the ships in those fleets. I could get behind that.
