I want more Choices

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 11:42 pm

I find the Bioware choices quite forced and artificial, don't get me wrong, they are imho the best games out there that aren't TES or Fallout, but it seems like do some stuff, major plot point, make choice, do some stuff, major plot point, do some stuff. I prefer the few choices but more free form feel of TES, where you don't feel so funneled. Having said that, not joining the DB was a proper moral choice with consequences ( role play a decent, morally good or neutral character, miss a big part of the game ), and remember these guys gave you the choice to nuke a town or not. Nothing against moral choices, they are a fantastic idea which would add to the game, just rather do without and play good old TES than have a huge main plot with major morality crises strung along it.

Even if a bit too simple, Daggerfall had C&C; Mw(well, you couldn't join every guild/faction if that counts for anything) and OB didn't :P There's no "Good old TES" in that matter.

Morality could factor into it, sure. But also, just generally having choices that alter the world around you.

Quests with multiple solutions. The ability to make a wrong decision, and fail a quest because of it. Or CHOOSE to fail a quest because you suddenly see a better way to profit out of whatever thingy you were sent to fetch / kill. A chance to convince the bandits to let you join them for a while, and raid caravans.

i didnt like how they did it on Fallout 3.

Good choice: Save little Ryan and return him to his father.
Bad choise: Dont save little Ryan, hide his body, and then tell his father he is still alive and waiting for him in another town.

How about:
Grey Area: Save little Ryan only to make him your six slave.
Grey Area: Save little Ryan knowingly at the exphense of his fathers death.
Grey Area: "Accedentally" let Ryan die, but take his dead body to his father for burial.
Grey Area: Kill little Ryan for the good of the country but as it turns out later he was infected.
Grey Area: Find Ryans father first and tell him Ryan is dead, then save Ryan and tell him his father is dead.
Grey Area: Find that Ryan has gone on a murder spree, but you save him anyway and return him to his father, who you find out is a child abuser.
Grey Area: Find out that Ryan is the warewolf that has been killing people, but you find out that Ryan is only killing murders anyway, so you save him.

The Witcher did quests realy well. As there was never a right way to complete them. Its either help the child molester mob who want the evil witch dead because shes been casting curses on them, or save the witch who has been dicing up dead bodys and casting curses and spells on everyone because she hopes to save them all from some certain doom. So its grey areas all around, and I realy liked about The Witcher.

With the whole morality thing, I'd really prefer it not to be clear cut, I loved the end of Deus Ex.

Spoiler
You could choose between:
1. Destroying the internet and creating a new dark age, so no one could control the world.
2. Merge with an AI and become a god.
3. Restore the world to 20th century capitalism.

My guess is that they learned from Fallout 3. I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree on this even if I would like options that aren't completely grey too.

Ugh. Choosing between Crappy Option 1 and Crappy Option 2 isn't fun. That's one thing I really didn't like about most of DA:O's "options". Most choices had obvious downsides, and even when you try to make good choices, the game just goes "lol bad things happen anyway". A character should try to do what's good for them (eg, if they believe little Ryan should be saved, then try to save him, if they think he should die, then try to kill him, etc). If something happens that makes sense, then sure, but I don't need the game constantly twisting my decision into something I didn't choose just because it's "edgy" or "gray".
