I want to play Fallout 3: should I install some mods?

Post » Fri Dec 10, 2010 11:15 pm

Hi everyone, after playing Oblivion for a long time I want to finally play Fallout.

I write here because I want to ask you if you know some mods that I MUST install before play.

English it's not my mother language but I will try to explain.

I think Oblivion wasn't a great game so I installed many mods and I think that with the mods it's one of the most beautiful game I ever played.

For Fallout 3 are there some mods that really improve the game and everyone should install? I'm speaking just of lore-friendly mods: I don't want another game, just a better experience with Fallout (even fix, graphic, sound...).

Hope you can help me...

Bye!

normally I would say not to install ANY mods before you complete the game, but, there are a few things you probably should have. First you should have FOMM installed http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640 (you will need it for mods later) Also there is http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3729 which I personally don't use but I hear it is a very handy tool.

Thank you for your answer, so you think Fallout doesn't need any improvemend for the first experience?

IMO Fallout3's handling of the followers is problematic, and my Phalanx mod is a good addition for a first runthrough.

Once you finish the game the first time, you will have a better idea of what you want changed in the game. Also it will make it easier to identify what changes were made to the game. Another bit of advice is when you do start adding mods, only add one at a time, that will make it easier to detect any potential conflicts with other mods.

Try http://sourceforge.net/projects/fomm/files/ for FOMM instead of the one I previously provided, this should be a more up to date version. any questions regarding FOMM should go http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1037768&hl=fomm.

Let's just say playing with vanilla helps you appreciate what mods can do. ;) You also get a good feel for what you think the game needs changed.

Ok, I think I will go with the Vanilla: I just wanted to know if the situation was like with Oblivion: for me it was unplayable without mods (DarN your interface mod for Oblivion it's one of the MUST HAVE for me!)

Fallout is much more playable out of the box than Oblivion was. While there are some weak areas, it's still a pretty good game without any enhancements at all. And yes, you should definitely use DarN's UI for Fallout.

While I fully concur with everyone that the vanilla should be experienced first, there are just a few VERY minor mods I found extremely valuable with the vanilla game. All of these mods have very little effect on the vanilla whatsoever. But, I feel they are important enough to throw in the mix. Do you have any of the DLC?

Megaton House Extra Storage, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1272 - basically the vanilla house with a few needed containers. (It should have been like this from the devs!)

Better Companions and Caravans, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1385 - (only the caravan plugin though!) Just makes the 4 roaming traders essential.

Firelance Quest, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4009 - Makes the random Firelance event a marked quest in case you miss it happening.

No repair with unique weapons, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7049 - keeps you from making the mistake of using your Xuanlong or A3-21 to repair the standard weapon.

Armored Vault101 Suit repairmod, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2702 - lets you repair it with other vault suits.

Whether you try these or not, ENJOY the experience!

EDIT: Not to toot my own horn, but my "Trail of Crumbs" mod was completely made with vanilla game in mind as well. All it does is gently guide you to 10 completely vanilla locations that are sometimes overlooked, rarely if ever visited, and sometimes even forgotten about. And it was designed to follow along with your normal travels and such so it basically has no effect on the vanilla questline's. Heres a link if you want to check it out. http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11283

the DLC add more modding tools or somethingoranother, as well as more assets for modders to use. Similar to oblivion really..

Also, I too say play the game once or twice without mods (excepting perhaps a UI mod if you must), and then mod to fill holes.

I was going to suggest that you uncheck M. Zeta. When I'm ready to go to that DLC I check it off and go, otherwise I leave it out due to the forced teleportation to the mother ship.

play it without mods first. then depending on personal tastes, download a few mods that you think feel right in your game.

Play it without mods first. I doubt you'll regret it. FALLOUT 3 is one of best rpgs out there and really doesnt need mods. The only ones am using at the moment are texture mods for cigerettes and the many posters in the world but other then that i have found the original game mechanics to be the best and most balanced. This after using many a overhaul mod which made things too tedious when i could do the same just by my own freedom of mental choice. I dont need a mod to tell me when to eat or sleep. I just do it on my own.

Sorry but can you please explain me? I don't understand english very well.

Zeta it's the only DLC that I have to activate only when I want to play with it, right? The others don't give any problems?

It isn't so much a problem as it is an annoyance; most of the DLCs have a definite "you are entering the DLC" kind of thing, so you know exactly what you are getting into, and can choose to do the DLC whenever it's convenient. Zeta, on the other hand, activates as soon as you get in the vicinity of the
Spoiler
downed alien craft
so you have next to no warning that you're about to enter Zeta. Oftentimes this means (at least in my experience) that you enter with way too much stuff (I make a point to leave most of my things at home whenever I do a DLC, myself).

Well, I didn't really want to give you any spoilers, but,
Spoiler
if you enable Mothership Zeta you can't get the Alien Blaster without getting beamed up to the alien Mothership. So, what I do is leave MZ uncheched until I get the Alien Blaster, and THEN enable it in my list.

Yup, when you
Spoiler
walk down into the crater you get "abducted" and there is no way you can stop it. And I believe when you come back the Alien Blaster is gone, but I could be mistaken on that one.
It's been a little while since I actually did that DLC, but I might do it tonight to double check.

I would say play with out mods first, then check out some mods when you are done.

I personally could not stand vanilla FO-3, and the Lunch box edition sat on my self for the 360 (beat it twice, about 60 hours) until it sold, then I got a cheep copy for PC and fell in love with FWE/MMM/WMK, and got a GOTY version.

Now with mods the game is coming close to my longest played non mmo games, like dragon age with 120+, vanilla Oblivion GOTY with over 200 hours (mods never felt right) and KOTOR with some where between 110 and 130 hours.

Oblivion and NWN2 are really close, I would say about the same time played on both, but nothing compares to the time I wasted on Everquest, and FFXI, I say my main in EQ has at least 6 months /played if he still exists.

and some how I went way off topic.

FO-3 is good vanilla for some, but I felt mods where needed to bring the game to life.

P.S

FWE 5.0 is very good and very easy to customize, you can turn eating and drinking and sleep needs on or off, but the stock setting for it are verry good.

If anything everyone should try FWE 5.0 at least once, it incorporates a lot of little mods into it.
