I want a proper interface for my PC version

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:16 am

I want you to make good inventory menus, that are fast to navigate and where I can see more items than in fallout 3 / oblivion. I want it to be a mix between Baldur's Gate and World of Warcraft, and not some scrolling nightmare.
Have as much as possible on one "screen".

And I want a field of view that is easy to change, so I don't throw up. I'm not playing this game at under 100 fov.

++

Not sure why I bother, I wrote something similar while you where making oblivion and you didn't care then either t.t

You think WoW's inventory was better than Oblivion's? Really?

Yes, I quite liked the bags that popped up on the side :)
I modified my interface quite a bit, but I always kept my bags like the original one. And I also liked the separate character screen. It was fast and easy to navigate.

I often had trouble finding stuff I needed...
In Oblivion that was pretty much impossible. I really don't see the need for a different system, PC shortcuts can't hurt though.

Kay, can't say I recognize having problems finding what I needed in WOW's style. I don't mind the "old style" (from obli) being there for those that find it easier, but I would want an option to have interface displayed in a different manner at least.

I didn't play it on the PC, I was shackled by the 360 version. Eitherway, the UI was horrible, no matter the platform you played upon. I'd sincerely hope that they would have conjured up something better this time, with their wizard hands.

Keyboard shortcuts and choice between symbols, text, or both would be nice. I really can't handle the symbols...

I for one actually hope that Skyrim has a better Bartering menu, like Morrowind and Fallout 3/NV. Oblivion's was really annoying. I had to click on the item, then a confirmation on whether I was sure if I wanted to sell that item. Sure, might not sound like a big deal, but when you bring in a lot of loot, you're sat there for ages, whereas in Fallout/Morrowind it's quicker to use and offers more on screen items, and you're done in seconds. And to make matters worse in Oblivion, the store owner always had to come out with some really unnecessary and cheesy line after selling or buying just about every item, which makes me want to kill them, learn Necromancy to rise them from the dead just to kill them, then repeat that about fifty times.

Input device (mouse) that is not influenced by the games own FPS. At normal mouse DPI setting, the mouse lag is intolerable. If anything, separate controls for sensitivities for mouse look and mouse gui (pointer).

There was no need for Oblivion's clunky UI. It was blamed on consoles, but the old 'Box never struggled with Morrowind's inventory system. Hopefully they go for something more efficient this time round again.

So agreed. I know DarN and socrates200X talk so it's a good sign in my opinion.

(Copy/paste from elsewhere:)

I have hope!

I'm a UI programmer here at Bethesda, among other things.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763 Please? *begs*

Ha, I love DarN!

He bugs me with all sorts of interesting questions and conundrums. It's great! :D

Me too. DUI is the first thing I install when I get the games, and he's had time to implement it.

Ok, I'm going to read into that comment, and assume that is a hint. (No I am not asking for it to be confirmed, though I am not stopping you either. :P)

The fact DarN bugs him all the time would lead me to think he's taken the hint and will do better for Skyrim for us PC folks. I am reading between the lines, but lets hope it's true.

Do bear in mind that while Socrates200X may implement the interface in code, he probably won't be the only coder working on it, and he may not design or specify the interface. I'm sure he has some input into the process, but other people may have far more say into the look and feel of it. I'm guessing Socrates' input will be more to do with the timescales and practicality of what can be done.

I vaguely remember a comment relating to Oblivion, that different people who worked on the interface coded the use of XML templates differently, so that DarN found some menus/screens much easier to modify than others.

I really liked Morrowind's UI. Especially being able to press "ctrl" to only select one item, "shift" to select all of the same type, and just plain click to specifically choose how many pieces of said item I wanna select.

Edit: Oblivion's UI really was a nightmare...

God no. I hated that mod. I may be the only person ever, but still.
The compass especially was horrible, and on my PC it just came up as a disorted mess. I uninstalled it straight away.

Oblivion's UI was good, although I have played WoW and found it good as well, especially with easy spell selecting, instead of Oblivion's evil hotkey system. I always forgot which one was which -_-

Morrowin's inventory was good, but Oblivion's inventory was initially a pain in the, hmm, until I installed my modified WZ's inventory system, which then became excellent, even surpassing Morrowind's.

Fallout 3's inventory is even worse than Oblivion's.

So I suggest something like WZ's inventory mod.

As for DarN ui, I did not use it, because My computer could not run Oblivion in higher resolutions, and in lower resolutions, DarN's ui was ugly, and on the other hand, I always use large icons and larger fonts for my deaktop icons, so there.

They should make smaller fonts for ui as an option, and keep larger fonts as well, for the like of us who are easier with large fonts.

oblivions UI is a perfect example of what we mean when we say "dumbed down for consoles". Is was OVERLY simplified. google search for morrowinds ui and compare. Morrowind was really flexible obliv was rigged.

Beth, please dont disrespect PC users again... thanks.

The only thing I like better about Oblivion's 'UI' is how quests are organized, compared to Morrowind's journal system.

You installed it wrong ;)

And my one suggestion in this thread: just getting rid of the 'How Many' prompt while selling things would boost this game's review score by 20%, I'm sure.
