I want to Talk about Argonians (and "Hist")

Post » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:32 am

So Argonians are my absolute favorite race, although the lore....seems sorta "limited" on them (On a sidenote, has anyone read any of the ES books (like infernal city)......and do they talk about them there?)

Anyways I feel like there is some conflicting information.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Races_of_The_Elder_Scrolls#Argonians States that Argonians get confused with hist, and that hist trees/sap are just a religious thing for Argonians.

However in the UESP wiki it states that "Argonian appearances may range from Reptillian to Almost Human, This is determined by the amount of Hist sap the ingest as hatchlings [citation needed], which takes place on their naming day"[1] (Infernal City).

This is confusing because....We see the same type of Argonian Everywhere, and nowhere else is it referenced about their being different ones (Besides for people mistakenly thinking they are trees, but this is probably from the actual "Hist" trees which they "may" have came from.

I guess what Im asking is.....are there different types of argonians? If this is true (The Repitllian to Almost human depending on the amount of hist) then why do we see the same ones.....and I havent read or heard about any different types. What would a "Almost Human" Argonian look like.......and what about straight up reptillian?

This "Hist" reference seems maybe misplaced, but im curious what other people think about it?

I haven't read the books myself, but they apparently do tell a lot about Argonia's culture.

You don't see the many types of Argonians in-game for the same reason you only see one of the, like, dozen Khajiit breeds in each game.

Very time-consuming and very not worth it to make all of them.

I'm pretty sure in Arena Argonians were more human looking.

They go over a bunch of Argonian tribes in the in-game book "The Argonian Account".

The same reason we've never seen the different types of Khajiit such as Ohmes Raht or Alfiq. Which is that Bethesda can't add 10 different types of playable Khajiit and Argonians, in addition to the 8 other races. They would have to work a LOT to diversify more than the 10 already-present races.

Almost human Argonian would have a human face with yellow eyes, a nose that resembles a serpent's and a speech that has emphasis on "ssss." Or at least, that's how I always viewed them. And the reptilian Argonian would be like the Alfiq Khajiit, scaling walls like a lizard and stuff.

Hmm I just didn't know if the "Hist" thing was just "wrong". But I guess you are right since we don't see multiple breeds of them. But I figured different tribes might look different, but I didn't know if this was related to Hist or not.

Just scaly people in Arena. In all the other games they're scaly people with lizard heads and tails, except in Morrowind where they were so beastlike that they were pretty much small, bipedal dinosaurs and it was okay to display them fully nvde.
