I want to talk about my Orc.

Post » Wed Jul 07, 2010 3:01 pm

So I finally found my perfect fit character : http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1119628-i-finally-got-it/

The thing is that I do not really have any kind of story or personality quirks or anything like that figured out for him, hes kinda utilitarian right now. The game lets you make a few decisions but I want to build up a good idea of who this character is, so he has an epic personality to go along with the build.

The way I decided to this is to have yall ask me questions and then Ill try to think about how he would answer them, and overtime this will create a personality for him. Its another of my wild ideas, lets see where it goes.

Ask away.

While in town the baker gives you a sweetroll. Delighted, you take it into an alley to enjoy, only to be intercepted by a gang of three other kids your age. The leader demands the sweetroll, or else he and his friends will beat you and take it. What do you do?

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Ah, another form of the "Ask an Imperial Guard" thread.. that was classic.. Glad it's back!

Do you eat horses?

Are you generally annoyed by people?

Would you ever consider killing for money?

Do you have any noble (or non-Orc) blood in you?

What are your thoughts on Nords, with respect to the history between the two races, and current events? (It is heard in the game that Orcs and Nords were feuding races, but now have banded together to face enemies from Morrowind, or something like that..)

Were you born in Cyrodil, or did you move from Orsinium or someplace else? If so, why did you move to Cyrodil?

I'm old-fashioned on the topic of orcs. :shakehead: I think they should all be sorta like goblins: brutish beasts who live outside of civilized areas in abandoned forts and camps. TES has ruined this popular notion by having them run bookstores and curiosity shops.

That being said, back in the dice & paper days, it was possible to play an orc or a half-orc as a character. What made it fun for the player was the fact that humans, elves, dwarves and other "civilized" races would by default not trust an orc, therefore the player would spend an X amount of time just trying to get other PCs and NPCs to accept the orc's presence.

If I were to ever play an orc in TES, that's how I would play him or her.

Do you hold with the:

Common view in Oblivion, Orcs are dumb and funny or...
Common view in lore, Orcs are a proud millitary race that can outthink most given any tactical situation.

Who would he date, or is he a monk?

I have an Orc character which I play as a brute, but that's just him. Orcs are actually off-shoots of Elves, and are known as Orsimer. They have just as much knowledge and thought processing capabilities as any other race. They aren't a beast race by a long shot.

Although you're entitled to the roleplay of thinking they're like that, nothing wrong with it. It's not an actual race that's gonna start protesting on the streets or anything. :P

My pompous Imperial assassin respects Orcs though. No real reason behind it, he's just okay with them.

All this ENTIRELY depend on which fantasy world you are in. I think Renee is talking about AD&D, in which orcs are beasts and only rarely show up in civilized areas to mingle with humans. I think you're talking about Oblivion, which makes sense since this is an Oblivion board, duh! =).

That being said, I'm with Renee. I'm an old fashioned pen-and-paper RPG player and I could never make myself play an orc. They're just not suitable for PC's in my opinion. They're almost like cavemen in my mind. No written language of their own and they communicate in a guttural language with no real grammar. I know that's not how they're portrayed in Oblivion, but I'm still not going to help the 'Gray flippin Prince' find his friggin fortune. Go back to your cage hog-boy!

This is Elder Scrolls.. Look at that big shiny title at the top of this page. Why on Earth would you have the image and lore of World of Warcraft Orcs in your head while playing Oblivion?

That makes absolutely no sense. If you like those Orcs so much, why not play that? It's fantasy, there's no set story we're all following. It's like saying teleportation in the film "Jumper" has to be identical to the teleportation in Harry Potter (called apparation there though). Makes no sense, it's fiction. None of it is real anyway.

Yes, I am talking AD&D, but also TFT, LOTR, and every other RPG or story I've ever come across. I'm old-fashioned, like I said. TES is the first RPG I've ever seen that puts orcs, elves, and humans pretty much on the same page.

Tollkien invented orcs! They were NOT "dumb brutes". They used sophisticated weapons and armor and spoke coherently. Certainly they were quarrelsome and brutal (as oppsed to brutish) and enjoyed fighting and destruction and torturing people. (There's a fair number of humans around who enjoy these things, btw.) They did have clans and clan loyalties. The orcs from Moria were out for vengeance. TES orcs haven't fallen that far from the original family tree.

There's a history of friction between orcs and Bretons (see TES: Daggerfall) as well as between nords and dunmer.

Really, you can make your guy pretty much what you want.

Your statement makes little sense either. TES decided to move away from the stereotypical race of Orcs that nobody likes and is enemies to everyone and decided to make them a more civilised race that is at least accepted in mainstream society, though there might still be some racial prejudice there. Personally I give kudos to Bethesda for not being another Tolkien-Orc clone and the fact that they were actually elves at one point should be clear enough that they aren't born from mud things like in LotR.

Mud things? Been watching the LOTR movie? Tolkien's orcs were created by Sauron from elves he'd tortured and twisted. The Uruk-Hai were created by Saruman, possibly by interbreeding men and orcs. Or, in the movie, from mud...

One of the TES:Daggerfall subplots is the attempt by the orc king Gortwog to get his race and city, Orsinium, recognized by the Empire. Orcs became playable in Morrowind, as a result and began appearing as npc's instead of monsters.

*sorry missing the reference I think*

Anyways I am not a kid, Im a man and I would probably intimidate them all with my War Hammer.

"As correspondent for the Black Horse Courier, I am conducting a series of Man-In-The-Street interviews. We would like to know a few things about you. First off, where were you born?

I was born in Orsinium.

What is your favorite city and where are you currently staying?

I have only been to the Imperial City so far, and I am living on a cot in the arena.

What do you think of the problem of travelers being attacked along the road?

Speak softly and carry a big hammer, its not a problem for me.

What do you consider to be the most important rumor you have heard lately?

I dont pay much attention to rumors.

And finally, what is your name and how do you spell it?"

Zak gro-Straklon spelled... like it sounds.

Do you eat horses?

Only when I have to I do like to hunt.

Are you generally annoyed by people?

No people are fine, its elves that drive me up a tree.

Im in the arena.

I have Noble-orc blood.

Drink and Fight. I cant argue with their mentality.

Were you born in Cyrodil, or did you move from Orsinium or someplace else? If so, why did you move to Cyrodil?

I was born in Orsininuim and arrested for something, they didnt explain.

I like the idea of an intelligent orc, perhaps a brilliant military mind, a strategist.

Common view in lore, Orcs are a proud millitary race that can outthink most given any tactical situation.

The bottom one.

Im not a monogamous Orc, I like big Nord women and little wood elf maidens.

I have an Orc character which I play as a brute, but that's just him. Orcs are actually off-shoots of Elves, and are known as Orsimer. They have just as much knowledge and thought processing capabilities as any other race. They aren't a beast race by a long shot.

how many kilo's can you lift and how many times in a row can you lift it?

I dont understand the metric system.

can you read ?

Yes.

are you one of the subtle orcs are more some kind of brute tank that is unstoppable ?

African or European?

How will he feel about the Oblivion crises?

Doesnt really care.

How tied is he to Orsinium?

Very strongly tied to Orsinium.

Does he hate humans? Elves? Beasts?

Alergic to Khajiit, and not fond of male Bosmer.
