Here's a thought: Wait for the Official Soundtrack to be released.

you want me to wait? I CAN'T DO THAT.

Mp3 is nice, but FLAC ensures (mathematically speaking) there is zero sound quality loss.

I'm not looking for the whole soundtrack, I just want that one song to be played whenever I do one of the following:

Drop my pants
Enter a room
brush my teeth

FLAC is the format to shift data around in, MP3 is the format to put on space-limited devices. Storage space is cheap enough that computers no longer count as space-limited when we're talking about 30mb files as opposed to 5mb files.

So, yes, FLAC please!

Protip: you can just convert a FLAC file to MP3.

And I want the Skyrim theme on vinyl. Actually, wait, it was mixed digitally, so that would be a waste...

It would be quite nice if Skyrim used FLAC for the music in the PC version. Consoles could use it too if there's enough space on the disc, but there's no reason the PC couldn't use it.

I'd love it in mp3. FLAC I don't have any strong opinions about either way.

I don't think that it is actually possible to discern a difference between FLAC and 256-320 kbps mp3 of the same song. In most cases "no, I hear it, FLAC is definitely more clear" is just self-deception. Some tests were made, where people didn't knew which one of two samples is FLAC and which is a high-bitrate mp3, and their chance of guessing was close to, well, pure guessing.

I've never really seen the point of FLAC. Seriously, it's a bajillion times bigger than mp3, and I'm not quite sure my phone can even play FLAC files. Is the sound quality better or what? It can't really be noticable then, except for those kinds of people that seem to think that buying a stereo for $5000 is totally worth it because of the "awesome sound". For the love of God, just plug a headset to the computer already.

Speaking of FLAC however, a German 8,8 cm FlaK Flugabwehr-canon would be awesome. That's what I want in a collector's edition.

Mathematically and technologically speaking FLAC is better but you have a good musical/sound ear to tell the difference in my opinion

Not to mention also needing a proper stereo setup.

You're missing the point - mp3 is a lossy compression scheme, you get a significantly smaller filesize but you also lose information. FLAC is lossless, a perfect reproduction of the source material. You wouldn't ever put it on a portable media player, and the sound quality difference isn't really noticable on standard setups, but for storage and archival purposes you *never* use a lossy compression scheme, because you can do nothing to it without losing quality further. With a lossless encoding you can get as much quality as you want to put on your small portable devices, and there will never come a time when you wish it were higher quality. The filesize is a moot point, due to the cheapness and size of modern storage.

Basically, MP3 is fine for listening, but for storing something you want as much information as you can - and that's where lossless compression like FLAC comes in.

I agree, but that is precisely why I use mp3. I have no need to store all the information that I can, but listening to the music is nice.

No I have 200 gigs left on my primary hard drive, and 4 separate hard drives with 60 gb, 80 gb, 400 gb, and 2 tb, respectively. I just don't really give a damn because I can't tell the difference as far as sound quality. I have been near loud noises all my life so I can't make out subtle distinctions in music.

Why not just offer download of it in several of the most popular formats, including lossless and lossy versions? Don't see the purpose of arguing about formats, folks have different tastes.

So if you save something in FLAC format and then copy the file so I can convert it to an MP3 format so I can put it onto my ipod, the original save won't get "dirty" in any way?

Of course not. Also, iPods don't support FLAC, but Apple has their own lossless audio codec called ALAC that does work. Mind you, there's just not much of a point in putting high quality lossless audio files on such a device - not enough fidelity there.

I like the idea of PC version using FLAC. No reason for it not to, look at how big hard drives are now. Only thing is, it'd making buying the OST kinda of pointless as this means it'd come with the game in CD quality already.

I would probably keep it onto my external hardrive and then update my library as I see fit. I suppose I should get a larger ipod anyways
