"We wanted to add mountains to block the player and cont

Post » Fri Sep 23, 2011 10:31 am

That's completely ridiculous.
What in the world would make Beth want to "block the player and control the experience"?

The entire point of TES is to give the player the freedom to do what he/she wants.

Living another life in another world won't be possible if whoever made that world controls your every move. Todd would never let himself and/or his team ruin the franchise like that! :tes:

I can climb up those mountains from any direction I want in the real world.

Unless you're Chuck Norris I find this very hard to believe.

I expect, just like in Morrowind, mountains will indeed force you to travel tin certain directions.

What he (and many others) said.

Morrowind was full of "geographic features" that encouraged you to travel in certain directions and ways. Valleys, ravines, mountains, giant magic forcefields.... It's part of what made the world feel bigger than Oblivion - you had to go around stuff, and couldn't just walk straight there like in most of Cyrodil.

I hear Skyrim also places cities in various locations just to block your direct path through them. I guess Bethesda prefers solid walls to player freedom.

Well said good Sir! However Chuck Norris doesn't need to climb...the mountain would crumble and fall in fear :toughninja:

They've also added this really annoying feature to their engine. They're nicknaming it "gravity", but what it really does is keep your character from flying.

And you know that player freedom has been sacrificed because... oh right, you don't know that. But yes, it's totally because of them spending time making your character look cool in 3rd person.

I don't know for certain, but it seems fairly obvious to me from everything i've seen of the game thus far that we're going to have to rely on set paths to get up most mountains.

And I really don't think you've ever done rock climbing, much less tried assaulting a mountain summit. There's a reason that everyone climbing Everest has to go the same way. And again, no one seems to feel that the world is conspiring to limit their freedom.

I've done plenty of mountain climbing in Scotland and Wales, and I can tell you now, there are no set paths everyone has to follow - you can climb most mountains from any direction you like and make your own route. Obviously some ways are going to be harder than others, but it's completely your choice which way you get up to the top. A thousand people could all climb the same mountain at one time with no two people taking the exact same route.

The big difference is in morrowind they gave you tools to help you to ignore that encouragement.(high jumping, jump spell, slow fall, levitate) As games went on they should have increased the tool set not removed them, like had the rope arrow mod from a thief tool mod in oblivion.

Read developer post. Rinse. Repeat.

And I think you mean "Obviously some ways are going to be deadlier than others, but it's completely your choice how to get to the top- or never reach the top and die."

I've heard them say numerous times that the mountains can be scaled so doesn't make any sense at all. And a lot of people don't even play for the story, but to explore, so that would ruin the game for many. Can't be the reason at all.

Is this the fourth or fifth thread Temp has created saying the world is smaller? I've lost count.

The world is only so big, I mean if you were able to climb up every mountain you're eventually going to hit an invisible wall because you would be crossing into another territory. On second thought, how cool/impossible would it be to start off the game by heading south, climbing up the Jerall mountains and heading down until you reach the bottom and it asks you to insert Disk 1 of Oblivion?

I think this is just a misinterpretation and exageration of a quote taken out of context. It's possible some of the mountains will make it more difficult to get to certain places ( which is realistic), but in the demo TH has said multiple times you can climb, and therefore cross every mountain in the game. Although I'm willing to bet there are some used to block off the sides of the map. I can't accept that any TES game will be designed with the idea that the player has to do the main quest, or whatever it is the developers want us to do, and not just do what the player wants.

This. I'm sure the first area you are in (heading towards Riverwood) will be fairly linear, but that doesn't mean you can't just walk off where you want though. I plan on finishing the tutorial, hitting Riverwood for supplies, and making my way southeast to The Rift. Forget the MQ for the time being, I just wanna explore.
