Wanting to know what's the next step.

Hi All,

Just wondering what the next step in making an efficient and relatively crash free LO is. I use Boss religulously, which everyone should cause it's amazing, I use WEOCPS (may this brilliant util rest in peace) and I've cleaned all the mods I can in my LO of almost 200 mods. I'm still getting CTD's every 1/2 hour to hour, which I know isn't bad for the amount of mods I use. But I was wondering if there's another level I can take my obsessive quest for perfection to? Is there another method of streamlining your LO that I have yet to delve into? I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you all may have. Everything I've learned so far has been from all of you and the phenomenal knowledge base on these forums. Thanks for reading guys.

Next step is learning how to use TES4EDIT to make your own patch files to eliminate (or at least reduce) the remaining conflicts that BOSS and WryeBash can't handle.
Sky Ranger's Oblivion Stutter Remover is also of tremendous help for a heavily modded game.

Oh yeah, I use OSR as well...hehehe. Tes4edit, eh? Do you know of a guide or tutorial that teaches how to do this? Thanks!

Well there is a thread floating within the last few pages. That is a start.

If you have cleaned mods then you at least know how to use it for that - right?

What else - well it can be used for finding mod conflicts in probably the most meaningful content. Really just load two mods together and look for the red and orange.

There is http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8629 that was written for Fallout3 in mind but essentially it is the same program.

But the next step I would think is to just play the game. Once you run into issues then you know the next thing to work on.

Thanks guys. This is some great stuff...I can just see the learning curve start to go uphill again. But I find it fun.

I was also wondering if there's a way to sift out all the textures and meshes that aren't needed in the oblivion directory. I know a clean install would be easy, but with the amount of work a fine tuned game setup takes I'm dreading doing a clean install. I was just curious. Is there any ill effect to having alot of these unused files in the oblivion directory?

Are they there because you manually installed numerous mods and then took them out?

Are you sure they are not needed? I wouldn't willy nilly pull them all out. I'd use an installer to reinstall all of what you're using then uninstall them with the installer then delete the stragglers and reinstall again.

If they are replacers then they will, of course, be used. If they are additions then they will only be used if called upon.

Using an installer is the best way to stay on top of data files beyond esp/esm. They automate the placement of data files and speed the process greatly. Many recommend Oblivion Mod Manager as it is seen as more user friendly, I however, do not and recommend instead the BAIN feature of Wrye Bash.

The difference is that OBMM will not tell you what mod or data file is currently overwriting what over file. You just have to remember what was installed last and that will be the winner.
BAIN however will tell you and adds a dimension to the install process in that you can adjust install order as well as load order.

it took me quite a while but last year when BAIN came out I slowly transferred over all my files from OMOD/OBMM to BAIN and have been able to tweak my install with greater and greater control ever since. Completely did away with thoughts of 'oh I better reinstall' as I could do that with just a few clicks and put everything back in with a few clicks (well it is more complicated but that is the idea). You will always know what you have installed and what it belongs to.
