Do the symbols meaning something or are they for role playing purposes

The Dunmer can get a tattoo of the Tribunal symbol on their forehead I think, other than that I'm pretty sure its all just for roleplaying.

I was trying to make this character from the original screen shots http://images.wikia.com/elderscrolls/images/2/25/Nord2.png and wanted to know what the symbol meant.

i made a dark brotherhood assasin and had the hand put across her mouth (matching the skin color so it is hard to see, but anyone who wants to see their friend could easily tell who she was)
