War Wives War Married

Post » Thu Jun 28, 2012 1:36 pm

I've noticed in MK's writings about ye olde Nords the term War Wives or being War Married. Anyone have an idea of what this means? Sometimes War Wife just seems to be a euphemism for female warrior. Other times I got a rather... erm, Fremen connotation. In Shor Son of Shor, Kyne is referred to as Shor's War Wife, which just seems to be the female who helps him get up into trouble.

Thoughts?

Kyne is his wife of war. Whatever that means.

I'd assume their [VEHK]ing causes natural disasters that turn the tides of war. Or that she goes into battle alongside him.

A wife who fights. Like the Wildling Spearwives from Game of Thrones.

Alternately, a marriage that lasts for a campaign.

This may not be connected, but the Orc leaders living in the strongholds of Skyrim have several wives, all who bear a different title/role.
(ie. "hunt wife", "forge wife", etc.)

Kyne and Mara are connected "marriage"-wise to Shor (or Akatosh) in previous games. Dibella's inclusion puzzles me, but it fits.

I've taken it to mean a wife who goes with you into battle.

It seems that the Nords practice(d) polygamy, allowing for different sorts of consorts. There are also Bed-Wives, Reaver-Husbands, Pity-Husbands mentioned in the texts.

So I would guess the more monogamous, settled approach they show these days is Mara having wept them into shape.
