Warhammer Fantasy

On this thread you may talk about the latest releases for Warhammer, what armies you have or what armies you want. You can talk about any problems you have with the rules or the models. You can ask for advice for army lists or how to paint that dragon of yours. I'll start off.

What army is based on which ancient civilization?

This what I have worked out so far.

Bretonnians = Medieval France
Lizardmen = Aztecs
Tomb Kings = Ancient Egypt
Vampire Counts = Medieval Romania
Warriors of Chaos = The Norse people

But what about the other races what real life civilizations are they based on?

Also I need help. I bought the http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vTJR6hyGeNE/THj4FdVHSpI/AAAAAAAAAAc/HoksiD4N0mc/s1600/warhammer-island-of-blood.jpg box set but I don't know what colour I should paint the armour of the High elves. So does anyone have any recommendations?

For the armour, start with a black basecoat then give them a coat of boltgun metal. Give a very thin wash with a blue ink afterwards. Then once this is dry, drybrush with mithril silver. This should work for you mate.

I never bothered with Fantasy much. I got the old box set, the one with goblins, Skull Pass I think it was called. Just too busy with 40K at the time.

I guess i never cared at the time, how "cartoonish" Fantasy looked, so I stuck with Lord of the Rings, thought the rules were more fun. From what I hear and read, the latest Fantasy edtion is based on War of the Ring. I mean took a few features from there, so I guess WotR was a test bed for Fantasy 8th or is it 9th edtion now?

How much money are we looking at for a decent fantasy starting kit where I can paint my own?

I'm wondering whether fantasy or 40k is more expensive...

40k is better.

Once again this wonderful forum displays its nature. Go take your baseless comments elsewhere.

I collect the Empire, myself. I got my start with the Sixth Edition Boxed Set, back when GW included the massive rulebooks and no army lists to tell you what you got in the boxed set. I really, really like WHFB, it kinda got me into models and wargaming. I've never really had the urge to drift to another army. A problem with WHFB is that it's so much harder to play than Warmachine/Hordes or WH40k. Keeping all your units in strict regiments without building or buying regiment bases is pretty much impossible, and the movement rules in general just irritate me.

How much money are we looking at for a decent fantasy starting kit where I can paint my own?

Depends on the army, kinda...Battalion are 90$ almost regardless of the army, though. Tack on 5$ if it's one of the newer modeled.

I'm wondering whether fantasy or 40k is more expensive...

That really depends on the army collected. A person playing High Elves will probably spend less money than a person playing Imperial Guard.

Thanks, I'll try that out and then the sons of Asur shall leave Ulthuan.

So does any one have any ideas what the next army book will be?

I'm hoping its either High Elves, Skaven or Beastmen.

Go Inquisition. Theyre the bomb, have a cool paint scheme, and draw on any other space marine chapter...also, they are awesome

This is a Warhammer Fantasy Thread not 40k.

I just started playing Mark of Chaos again two days ago. Lots of fun despite its flaws, I just love crushing the weakling Empire with the northern tribes.

I'd say it's either Ogres or Bretons. Those were in the works, as was the Tomb Kings one, before 8th edition was announced. Since the toilet paper wraps are such a peculiar choice for a second race after Orcs&Goblins, I'm fairly sure that they will be next. Skaven are too recent, in Games Workshop terms. ^_^

Man, threads like this always make me feel guilty about that stock of 14 unpainted miniatures behind me. But the work and the games...

I really hope it's the Bretonnians, I've been waiting a while for that. If the new rulebook hadn't been released then I'd be praying for ogres instead, but I'm loving that I get to do impact hits, have their attacks and then get another round in with the stomp attacks :D

Yeah, the Skaven and Beastmen are a bit recent but the high elves aren't as recent.

True. And they are a favoured faction. They might take turns now, including the favoured ones (Orcs and Goblins) and then another they had already in the works (Tomb Kings).

I play WFB, as for my army my avatar is a dead give away. It's really a fun game and I went to fantasy due to the fact that I played so much 40k as a teen. WFB really is a blast, much more strategy involving large blocks of infantry and cavalry and there is a greater variety of armies in play by the players than in 40k. I love Space Marines, but everyone plays them so its always an Astartes VS Astartes battle 9 times out of 10. With WFB, everyone pics the army they think looks coolest, or suites their style of play.

Namely: Dwarfs, High and Dark Elves, Orcs and Goblins, Chaos and Lizardmen.

Thanks to the Uniforms and Heraldry of the Skaven book I have decided to paint my Skaven as Clan Mors with additions from both Clans Moulder and Skryre.

I collected both Orcs and Bretonnians for quite a while, but only to paint and gather dust. Never actually tried playing the game itself, and kind've gave up on it altogether because it was such an expensive hobby.

I'm thinking of getting either some Storm-vermin or a team of gutter runners. Any recommendations?

While I like the game, even if the current versions rules are not the best, I like painting and building models the most. Even then, Im really not that good a painter. I used to have an Orcs army, but it is now mostly split up among friends. I currently have the beginnings of an Empire army with some painted but most just primed or still waiting to be built.

But I am considering selling it. The skulls and spikes GW has to put on everything lost its appeal a long time ago. But most of all it's the prices. Back when I first started years ago, a box of Orc Boys came with 20 orcs for 32$. That was expensive, but manageable. Now it is 10 Orc Boys for 34$. For Empire it is now 30$ for 10 Handgunners or 10 State troops. Dont get me started on the Greatswords, 10 for 50$. They aren't metal or anything, they are plastic, just like the State Troops. Untill GW stops increasing prices yearly and pricing miniatures based on they function in the game instead of whats in it, I think I am done with them.

I might start building a historical army that I can proxy for a Warhammer Empire one if I want to play. I've been looking at the Perry Brothers War of the Roses plastics. The Perry brothers have made alot of the miniatures for GW and lots of the LOTR range, which also happens to have some of my favourite models. They wont match up perfectly with Warhammer scale, they are still 28mm but not Heroic scale. So skinner, not as huge catchers mitt hands, or weapons the size of trees.

These are from the War of the Roses Infantry box. 28$ for 40 men which can be assembled as a variety of archers and billmen.

http://www.warlordgames.co.uk/neo/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/wotr_unit.jpg

They also have a European Mercenaries box. Again 28$ for 40 men including 18 pikemen, 12 handgunners and 12 crossbowmen.

They are currently working on some mounted knights, and say that they *might* add some dismounted men-at-arms in the box

So some very nice miniatures for an insanely better value than GW, which I can most likely use as a proxy for my Empire and as a historical army. And seeing how I am more in it for the models and painting, why not go for a cheaper and same quality model? The only thing I would miss is the Landsknecht style.
