WARNING! 1.3 update breaks the GECK

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:30 pm

I just tried a little play test of my mod and, all seems fine. Followers worked fine, no CTD's when entering my new cells. with luck we'll get this new GECK soon.

Not at all.

Let's see - you don't care about mods, you don't care about the Geck. You've made two posts in the Geck forum that amount to nothing more that trolls.

Good. So long as the only negative effect is that we cannot use the geck until tomorrow, I can deal with that.

Exactly... I'm kind of hoping that if we ignore it, it will go away. <_<

I'm wondering why people apparently need mods. All I hear is people using them for fun and aesthetics. Can't understand why you can't play without them.

Some people simply enjoy using mods, others of us enjoy making them. Mods are a big deal! You don't understand them because you've never used them. Some are cheats, some are immersion based and, some make the game harder.

The ability to craft your own personal game to your tastes is a wonderful thing.

You might not care or, understand but, My "DCInteriors Project" adds several hundred new, explorable interiors to FO3. I had as much fun building the mod (if not more!) as, I had playing the game.

I was going to ignore you myself but, I just have to say, "If you don't have anything constructive to say, go back to your council and wait for your patch to come in!" Those of us who are bothered by this have something to talk about.

@Gunmaster,

Not saying we won't find any other glitches, (I know you were around for Fallouts v1.5 bug,) and, things are not that bad. Well as far as game play goes anyway. :celebration:

Indeed. The G.E.C.K. isn't (and has never been) listed in the Tools section for me.

This is true, there may be some unknown bugs. I think I started modding right as, or after v1.5 was released, so I don't really remember it. :P

I'm going to scream into a pillow if Obsidian thought they had been releasing GECK patches through steam, and never noticed none of us could see it. Though that also means that they have hopefully fixed plenty!!! I cannot wait to see what the patch entails. :D

Thanks for that info GStaff, glad to know it (hopefully) won't be a long wait.

Website is still the 1.1 version of the NVGeck. I'm not logging onto Steam, I'll take your guys word that it isn't there. I didn't even know Steam would/could have it at all, period. I'll just wait for the website to have it. :)

This will probably mean that GECKPU will need to be updated. Having script compile error messages is rather useful in fixing the errors.

Heck, maybe we can have the new GECK have them enabled to begin with?

I can't use the GECK without GECKPU. How does one debug a script over 100 lines without it? :(

Just tested GECKPU and, it also not working. With some luck the compiler will be included in the new GECK update.

I sure hope so. While the GECKPU is awesome and available; I would, of course, prefer being able to get error messages without a 3rd party program.

i hope geckpu is going to be part of the geck, i mean it debugs by default (since you cant save when there is a fault) so why not let it display the dang message!

Does anyone else feel like the PC community, and modders in general, are getting gipped a bit by this?

I can't put my finger on it, but it seems to me that gamesas should know that their PC base is going to be running mods and using G.E.C.K., and should be planning their updates accordingly.

As in, don't patch the game until G.E.C.K. can run it?

It seems like such a common sense thing to do in my humble opinion, which is why when gamesas doesn't do it, it feels like a snub in our direction.

I don't know, maybe its just me.

In the meantime, I'm forced to find other ways to spend my leisure time, which svcks because I was looking forward to playing around tonight.

I personally have disabled Steam's auto-updater. This incident will not be repeated if I can help it.

Yeah except, it's a tad bit Bethesda Game Studios, and mostly (I would think) Obsidian Entertainment that's responsible for patching the game and the GECK. Bethesda Softworks is the publishing company, not the game producers.

Second, I don't think they were aware, since they had to make the game/patch on the GECK, it obviously worked for them. Gstaff has already states they are fixing it tomorrow, which I would say is a pretty fast response. I think we are lucky to even have the GECK and modding abilities in a game like this, and saying we are getting gipped (why is that always spelled with a g?) is kind of... I dunno, just, mean?

Meh, Like I said, it was just my opinion. Apologies to gamesas if what you say is true, and Obsidian is at fault.

"Gipped" I suppose could be spelled "Jipped," it looks queer either way to me.

Yes, tomorrow is fast, I guess I was just frustrated. I played NV when it first came out 5-6 times over, and then left for other games/school. I just recently came back to find that the modder community's population exploded, and was psyched to replay a good game with some new features. A few days in, and now I am denied that. Even if its just for a day, with my hectic schedule, its unnerving. Also, your reasoning on the GECK not being updated first seems implausible to me. I stand by my initial judgment that if your player base is using a separate program (that you also use) to modify the game, that should be the first thing to get patched, not the last. Sorry if that seems mean, but again, it is just my opinion; I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same.

I don't feel "Gipped!" (My spell check shows it with a "G", personally I thought it should be with a "J"!) I was just trying to warn other modders who might not want a swift kick to the "Nuts"! :whistling: (someone had to try it first or, no one would know!) :swear: I expect bugs, glitches and some minor frustrations. Your right, seems like we'll be getting a quick update. the v1.5 bug wasn't fixed until v1.7, for "Broken Steal". The bug killed any mod that added anything to the world, mods like mine that add interiors were broken because, the doors no longer worked. The community was left with only weapons, armor, nudy body replacers or, simple texture mods.

I must have thought you were around through the entire Fallout v1.5 bug because, I started to see your posts once I came back from my "forced" hiatus from modding FO3. (Glad to see your still around! :celebration: )

We don't get the same GECK that the Dev's use, ours is dumbed down. there are things that they are not allowed to distribute to the general public because, of legal, copyright restrictions. (Things such as lip sync and, I'm sure many, many other features.) We get what we get and, have to deal with it and, find other work arounds to produce our mods.

It's still fun, I'm not bashing the Dev's, I just want a fix so I can continue having fun! Spending my hard urned cash on there games.

This is why I don't like Steam. Can't revert, and I have to always remember to stop the auto-updates (even though it will sometimes auto-update even when it told it not to).

I get your point but, I don't want to turn this into another steam bashing tread! I would love to be able to roll back my game version but, I can't! Such is life, "We can't always get what we want but, we get what we need!".

sorry for the cheesy 60's song reference but, I couldn't resist.
