WARNING! 1.3 update breaks the GECK

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:52 am

I would love to be able to roll back my game version but, I can't! Such is life, "We can't always get what we want but, we get what we need!".

If you backed up the exe files, you could roll back (but only be able to play in offline mode) by copying the older version exe's over the newly downloaded ones. Obviously most don't want to roll back permanently, but if you do this before every new patch you can roll back if you want until a problem is fixed. Just food for thought for when/if there's yet another patch...

I've backed everything up (including the entire Steam NV directories this time hehe) so I think I'll give the new patch a whirl. I'm curious about the weapon changes in the vanilla game anyway...but I sure hope they hurry up with an updated GECK. I don't do any heavy modding but I still like to be able to do what I want, when I want! :D

Steam://install/22480 should do it.
(22480 being the AppID for GECK NV Edition, 22380 being New Vegas itself.)

EDIT: Works as a URL, it's a Steam install command such as these others.
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Steam_browser_protocol

EDIT: Ah it's not active yet it seems.

EDIT: To validate and verify this one can also use the following, however as per above since it's not active it can't really be installed or used yet or the install script would have worked.
Steam://validate/22480

EDIT: Just about finished filtering trough FalloutNV.esm with FNVEdit also.
http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34703
(Copied FalloutNV.esm before it updated, another copy after it updated and named it FalloutNV.esp, copied back the pre-patch verson and then edited FalloutNV.esp in FNVedit to actually be a esp file and depend on FalloutNV.esm then just filter it, it'll take quite some time, and finally remove all original/identical records from FalloutNV.esp to leave just the altered/updated content - gives a clear definition and view on what exactly changed or updated instead of just the listed balance changes Steam news article about the update shows, of course for any exe changes the NVSE steam or similar will have to look at that, I can't see anything of what that has done though it seems they've already mentioned a few things during that NVSE beta 9 update recently - http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1168320-beta-new-vegas-script-extender-nvse-v1/page__view__findpost__p__17541849 )

EDIT: That's a lot more changes than I thought there would be.
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/7866/12345r.jpg
(Updating the mods I use is going to take some time as usual but comparing against this should simplify the process this time.)

(To name some things all cowboy themed hats now use a DT of 1 instead of 0, Nuka-Cola has a duration of 25 instead of 20, Gannon Tesla armor is medium instead of heavy and much much more.)

Thanks for that info GStaff, glad to know it (hopefully) won't be a long wait.

Website is still the 1.1 version of the NVGeck. I'm not logging onto Steam, I'll take your guys word that it isn't there. I didn't even know Steam would/could have it at all, period. I'll just wait for the website to have it. :)

I'll let you guys know when I hear what's up.

As long as they patched GECK first, I'd be cool with that.

It's a new version #, but aside from working with new DLC (stayed tuned), that's about it.

Update: Folks at our office are seeing The GECK in the Tools section of Steam... both with work accounts and home accounts. It's labelled GECK - New Vegas Edition.

Hi

Definately nothing in Steam for me for New Vegas under tools, I've tried logging out and back in again, not sure if it's just a Steam UK problem, maybe USA users can see it

Okay, can folks keep letting me know whether or not you see GECK - New Vegas Edition in the tools. Might be helpful to know where in the world you're located.

To get to Tools, click on Library, then from the drop box below it, select TOOLS.

The Steam Forum says that the Geck isn't available with the retail version of the game and has to be installed manually

Right... it has to be downloaded. I'll see what I can find out about the Steam version (again, we're able to see it in the Tools section). In the meantime, it shouldn't be long until the updated version is on fallout.gamesas.com

Can't you just make it available from your official site, and don't bother with Steam ?

No it doesn't. We still don't have error reporting. And GECKPU needs to be updated. So that means extra fun times looking for the syntax errors that NVGECK is invisibly throwing a fit over. Maybe if error reporting was enabled from the start, we wouldn't need GECKPU to enable them. How did Obsidian manage to get by without script compile error reports?

At least we ascertained that the interior cell loading bug was due to a missing INI setting...

I'm having to re-install the game now though, hoping it's not a problem with the game after using the new GECK, I've tried running the game again but even with no mods installed and using Steam instead of FOMM the game crashes at start up. Re-downloading now from Steam so fingers crossed

The GECK wouldn't affect the loading of the game itself.

Well, if you ever do any scripting, you'll find issue. The only indication that there's a syntax error in a script is that it won't close when you get the "save?" dialog box. No "syntax error!" error message, no labeling of which line has the error.
