warning: Users, be Cautious while using Steam

Post » Sat Nov 22, 2014 3:55 pm

I have been getting invites like this from random people for the past month or 2 months and messaging me saying weird stuff like this. I always remove the person if he, she sends me messages like that or I decline invitations.

The reason why I accept people is because some of them have names when they send me invitations that I think are some people I play with in EVE Online, World of Warcraft or some other video game that I played with, but if it turns out it's not that person then they get removed.

Also yeah I agree this topic should not turn into a Digital Rights Management (DRM) discussion because people can steal from you from gog.com as well, accounts on any web sites can get hacked if you are not careful.

What this article actually shows is just how effortless it is to bypass security using links from Google Drive.
Worse yet, the article shows the exact code in a URL needed to do this.

Good thing my anti-social internet behavior is so strong. No need to worry about messages now. :P

It's just like those fake RuneScape emails (which I still get from time to time, even though I no longer play the game). Just ignore and go on with your life... Simple as that.

Yup have enountered this, some private profile with nothing in common that claims to have a trade offer. but never replies when you say no...

And they want you to download some screensaver file and install it. I figured it was something fishy about it.

Well, good that you're spreading the warning.

This is why I make sure that the people on my friends list is actually my friends.

Grant that's possible. It's rare for me to receive a random link through Steam without my mates telling me they're sending it via Mumble/TeamSpeak. And anything with "bit" in the URL is an instant no no

The ones I find funnier are the emails I get about MMOs that I've never played or signed up for.

(And speaking of new scams, I got an email that seemed scammy - the address it was from - but that claimed to be from Gamestop's Powerup Rewards program. Looks like the scammers are spreading the net wider.)

Thank you for the warning. An aware person equals two persons! (Or is it like that you say it in english?)

And another reason to not use Windows.

The exact code? ...You mean, the argument at the end of the URL? Sorry, but that's not exactly difficult nor sophisticated, nor does it have anything to do with Google Drive (the "code" at the end of the URL).

I get them pretending to be Blizzard, saying that I've been hacking and gold trading in WoW (which I only ever played twice, months ago) but I can prove I'm innocent by logging in to fake battlenet! So I filled in that login with BS insults and it worked lol (eg, go[censored]yourself.gmail.com)

The only time my Steam is online is when I wanna play anything with multiplayer. If I'm not playing an online game, that means I'm playing New Vegas/Skyrim and my Steam is offline. I don't do this because I hate Steam being online, I do it because it's annoying to be running around Whiterun when a friend decides he wants to IM/Invite me to his game/Trade Requests, all that stuff.

Just turn off the overlay for Skyrim (Skyrim - > Properties -> untick the "Steam Community In-Game" option.)

Oh woah, I didn't know you could do this per game, I thought it was all games only. Awesome dude, thanks for the tip.

Yup, very useful. Also in games with the controller that support the Steam overlay, but only when launched through Big Picture Mode, holding the "Guide" button for a few seconds will force-close the application. Obviously, this is most useful in situations where the game is hanging/frozen.

This targets Windows users, certainly, but running an executable with elevated permissions on most OS's is a security issue. As usual, the biggest security hole is the user.
