warning: Users, be Cautious while using Steam

Post » Sat Nov 22, 2014 4:12 pm

so, http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138657-Malware-Disguised-as-SCR-File-Spread-through-Steam, and i thought maybe I should give you a warning to keep an eye out..

while i find it hard to believe someone would fall for such a thing, i realize there are some gullible not-so-tech-savvy people out there

Mkay, back to what i was doing...

EDIT: Please, do not turn this into yet another pro/anti Steam argument, this thread serves to warn users of the Potential risk until such point as the security risk is fixed by Valve.. please relocate any such arguments into the Appropriate thread

Or, even better, a reason never to click on links from strangers in an IM window.

I'd have to chat and/or have a friend's list in Steam for this to be a threat.

(as well as being dumb enough to click on vague links from people I don't know....)

I think the "If only you were a real person to get my pun" was more humorous..

Do screensavers even save the screens anymore?

Pretty much, the opener was a giveaway. 'We know each other from school' Anyone who did know you would tell you who they were.

I think I've seen a few of these accounts floating around. They have one game purchase -usually something dirt cheap- yet in a day or two have added dozens of friends.

Of course, that's assuming those people aren't just really cheap and just want to use Steam as a social networking platform.

Order of the day is, common sense. Don't click on links unless you know the person and don't click on something like this regardless.

This made my laugh way more than it should have.

And thanks for this, although it is common knowledge not to click random links, I'll still send this to my friends in steam. :)

I saw news of this a while back. As others have stated already, use of common sense is highly advised.

A random, completely unknown dude claims to know you and posts a link which is masked using URL-shortener? Riiiiight, not suspicious at all. Seems reeeally legit.

A good rule of thumb is to check steam profiles before adding and dealing with strangers. Lacking friends, not being in groups and no play time in games or a profile set to private is a red flag.

There's a member of SPUF right now writing a website that scans Steam accounts looking for flags like those and will have a list of all suspicious accounts. Unfortunately I can't find that thread.

Doesn't say Imgur or Facebook...no clicky.

Mind you I know everyone on my list so I shouldn't have this problem

Once someone is infected it will send out messages to that person's friend list, so it isn't always a random person it cold very well be a friend.

Generally things like this work by hijacking an account and sending all of their friends links through that account, so you may very well have this problem. Generally just don't click links and you are fine though.

Good to know, although it is a rare sight that someone contact me through chat these days. And I usually don't click on random links in the first place.
