Warrior Build?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 4:37 pm

So a few days ago, I made a post in the Morrowind boards about character help. See, I've been playing since Morrowind, but I've always played on the lowest difficulty setting, and in Morrowind I always used cheats. I decided that I wanted to try the game the way it was intended to be played, with default difficulty settings and using no cheats or glitches. I ended up getting some advice from the post, and using my previous knowledge, managed to make my character. Now I've got an Imperial Warrior, level 28, almost done with the Main quest and already beat the Imperial Legion faction.

Now, I'd like to do the same with Oblivion. Problem is Oblivion's level scaling. I'm not exactly sure how to make the build. As I tend to roleplay slightly, let me state that I want my character to be a male Imperial, warrior build. I want to use as little magic as possible (none would be preferred.) And for the birthsign, I want to use the warrior.

I'm thinking attributes Strength and Endurance, just like I used for my Morrowind character. But for skills, I'm not so sure.

I think - blade, heavy armor, marksman, block, athletics, armorer, and .. not sure what to use for the last one.

I figure I'll have to use potions for healing. I don't want alchemy as a skill because one.. it doesn't fit my roleplay, and two it's way too overpowered. I know that a lot of people pick skills they won't use, so they can level as they choose to, but that breaks my rp immersion, and I don't want to go that route. Will this character work out? I heard in the teen levels it gets really hard to play. Just looking for suggestions and tips that will allow me to beat the game with this build. I'd prefer not to have to lower the difficulty.

Maybe Restoration for your last skill. You get an Absorb Health on touch spell, which will really help to keep your health up. Cast it while in melee combat, and it takes health from your opponent and gives it to you.

The biggest problem you're going to have is that you have all three Endurance skills as majors. If it were my character, I'd probably move Block to minor, and replace it with something from one of the magic schools.

This will go against some of your pre-selections but this is what I would suggest for you.

Race: Imperial (You want an Imperial)
Birthsign: The Lord (It gives you a solid healing spell throughout so you wont need restoration)
Special: Combat (A given)
Attributes: Endurance, Strength (Also given)
Majors: Blade, Blunt, Block, Armorer, Heavy Armor, Light Armor, Marksmen

Now you will have all the weapons and all the armor and the ability to maintain them all. The Lord Healing spell is Really good and you can use it as often as you want throughout the game without leveling any magic. Remember also that after battle you can wait (and a warrior would rest between battles) to refill your life. In addition you could justify Alchemy because a warrior would have a basic idea of how to heal himself, dress his wounds.

If your dead set against using alchemy. I would suggest that you purchase potions from vendors. Aint nothing wrong with that. Buy and loot healing potions and you should be able to compensate for rapid leveling.

I wouldn't have both Blade and Blunt as majors. They both contribute to the Strength Attribute, and when are you really going to train both skills? As you get up in the higher levels, you will want a good killing skill, instead of two mediocre killing skills. Switch one of these out for Acrobatics. My two septims.

My take on an imperial warrior is usually adding speechcraft and mercantile. The class would then be blade, blunt, block, heavy armour, speechcraft, mercantile, athletics/marksman. Then you level up either blade or blunt, and speechcraft and mercantile will probably level pretty slowly. Just make sure you get high blade/blunt, heavy armour and block and you'll be fine. To get better multipliers for level up, train hand to hand and armourer.

Warrior is a good birthsign, but as zakarius said, the lord is a huge help for anyone not using magic.

Seems there's a lot more different views for warriors in Oblivion than in Morrowind lol.

Ok, I think I'll go ahead and use the Lord Birthsign, since I'm more lenient on that. However, I don't want to throw magic into the mix. Restoration would have been the only one that I allowed, and don't really want it, so I won't use it. Don't really want to use light armor ever, so I don't want that in there.

I'm thinking - Blade, Block, Heavy Armor, Marksman, Mercantile, Acrobatics, Athletics. Would this work out ok?

Most people tend to say not to use both Blade and Blunt because you don't need em. With this set up, I'll have Blade in Strength, Block and Heavy armor in Endurance, Marksman in Agility, Acrobatics and Athletics in Speed, and Mercantile in Speechcraft. Now I won't have all three of one Attribute.

.. Looking at that now, I suppose it could make sense to switch out either Acrobatics or Athletics for Blunt, so I'll have two Strength attributes. However, as previously stated, won't that work out to :

- Either having blade or blunt really high, and the other really low. That means trying to train the lower one at a higher level will get me killed easily

or

- Training both equally, but at a higher level, both will be considerably weaker than they would be if I only took one.

So, maybe my current list would be better than throwing in both blade and blunt?

my generic Orc hammer thumper build is:

sign: The Warrior
Spec: Combat
Attributes: Strength, Endurance

Blunt
Block
Heavy Armor
Athletics
Restoration
Alteration
Armorer

Those are the only skills I use and I usually cap out endurance early on because Orcs have lots of it. It seems to work great for me. Do not worry about getting the maximum number of attribute points per level and you will have fun.

Looks good to me. If you get your blade up to a comfortable killing level, like 75, then I would experiment with the blunt, because you could always fall back to a blade when you started getting pounded. Or, just do what pleases you, really it's about you having a good time.
