Down south in the badlands of the Capital Wasteland are two major sites, highly dangerous to civilians and soldiers. The area itself is nearly inhabitable. The rocky, mountainous terrain proves to be tough to cross, and with little to no food sources or game in the area, it makes for a desolate place. For a long time, nobody has bothered trying to live there except the daring and the skilled. But eventually the Raiders who had ultimately left from the Pitt and the northern badlands needed a new home. The northern badlands were now over-hunted and the original Raider home of the Capital Wasteland was now deserted. Only few small hideouts and camps were left now, and several Raiders migrated to the west. This proved to be unsuccessful. The west had been a home to hundreds of families of Deathclaws, the place was frequently patrolled by the Enclave, and the river nearby had a nest of mirelurks, which had slaughtered any raiding party. The Raiders were desperate now, and moved south, while some Raiders stayed.
Once in the southern badlands the Raiders realized the area was perfect. There were mole-rat nests everywhere, which nobody cared to eat, except Raiders and Super Mutants. The entire land for miles around was barren and unoccupied by barely much. The only threats were small amounts of Super Mutants and roving Yao-Guais, but they didn't stop the Raiders from setting up shop. Once they stumbled upon an enormous canyon that had used to be a factory and trainyard was now empty and still containing some unlooted goods. After months of building from nearby deserted shacks and what they could find, they now had a place to call home: Evergreen Mills.
While havoc and terror was raised in the area the Raiders now moved into, an organized band of mercenaries called the Talon Company had just began its uprising. While they had most of their battles and wars in the Mall and the area around it, they set up their base in an out-of-the-way pre-war Army base, Fort Bannister. Fort Bannister was only about a mile north of Evergreen Mills, and instead of starting rising tensions between the two feared groups, a Talon Company member had brought a document, signed by Commander Jabsco, involving a deal:
The Talon company would do their work without being raided and recieve food supply from Evergreen Mills, and the Talons would protect the Raiders from anything they couldn't handle, and would take care of anyone attempting an attack on Evergreen Mills. The leader of the Raiders, Yvotch the Horrible(taking the name from Ivan the Terrible), agreed with this pact. The two were now an unstoppable power, Raiders had the supplies, manpower, workers, and main supply of rifles, and the Talons had an army, supply of explosives, shotguns, ammo, and medical supplies.
Thirteen years after the death of the Lone Wanderer(2258-2283), the rocky region was discovered to be more than just piles of rocks; there were several deposits of gold, coal, and silver everywhere. This made the land up for grabs. The Raiders and Talons tried to work out a deal, but it just wouldn't work. The Raiders were greedy for gold so they could make more caps, and the Talons wanted the silver and coal for production of bullets and expansion of their base. Nobody wanted to share, because if they split it there wouldn't be enough for the two. Jabsco and Yvotch were now beginning to grow bitter of each other, and began an arms race.
More and more weapons and armor came pouring in to both sides. Finally on 2297, one Raider scouting party and one Talon scouting party ran into each other. The spark of the battle began with an arguement of which side was better, and eventually punching, then guns. All six Raiders were killed. Yvotch was furious about this, and declared war on Talon Company.
Four years of continuous fighting ensued, until the Brotherhood began to take notice of this war. The Brotherhood had actually planned to take the minerals in the area, and eventually open the area for another base, of which people could actually live, in safety. They prepared troops to take out everyone in sight, thinking the Talons and Raiders were no match. They would be proved to be wrong.
As if the war weren't bad enough, the Enclave wanted the minerals as well, and were ready to set up testing and research on the area long before the war, but never had the chance. They were ready to start as soon as possible, and wanted the war over. The Enclave deposited weapons, vertiberds, ammunition, and armor to Raven Rock. The Enclave and the Brotherhood were about to deploy into the same area at the same time in the middle of a waging war that had yet to be finished. Things were going to be hell, serious hell.
