Was it Difficult to Change Systems?

Post » Sun Jul 25, 2010 12:15 pm

I'm planning on buying a PC somewhere in the future. I wonder if it is difficult to get used to the controls?

If you had such a switch from either console to PC, PC to console, or a different console to another console please post. I've been using Xbox, and have not played many games on PC most at my friends or cousins but I still find it difficult to maneuver. Of course I've never fully had it 24/7 so needs the muscle memory to settle in.

How long did it take you to get set and get a feel for it? Or do you still have problems or certain kinks?

After about three years away from PC's of any type, it's still taking me time to get used to. But, getting back into the gaming aspect, is easier than just typing.

I played on the Xbox 360 at a friend's house about a week ago, not having touched a controller like that since playing Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. I was so bad with it. I couldn't aim well, the camera was hard to control, and nothing felt intuitive anymore as it is on PC with the keyboard for me.

I got a desktop recently and the controls were pretty intuitive.

Both methods feel pretty much the same to me.

Also,I call BS on those that say a mouse and keyboard are more accurate for aiming than a controller is.

I do find it harder to get used to different control schemes on the PC though. After several cases of jumping when trying to activate things I set up Fallout 3's controls to be the same as Morrowind's.

I don't really find it difficult to adapt to any control system (360, PS3, PC, Wii, whatever). The only thing that really bugs me about using a keyboard and mouse is the absence of anolog sticks, and the gradual transition between walking and running they can give you. I find that not being able to have any sort of middle ground between walking and running is really annoying and feels plain old clunky. You're either walking, or with the press of the 'run' key, you're running. It feels so unnatural compared to an anolog stick. This is the only reason why I'll still play some games on the consoles.

And yeah, I know you can use a controller with PC, but then I might as well not mention keyboard and mouse.

I think it takes a little while to adapt to a new control scheme, but you have to deal with that when first playing a new game anyway. Personally, I find most games easy enough that after a half-hour I get the feel of it.

I mainly play PC. I find the 360 hard to get used to. At first I completely svcked, although I am getting better with time at playing FPS's on the console. I still find that a mouse is far superior for aiming compared to a controller.

Well, I'd say "no," but...I've used three generations of Playstations consecutively...

Can't say I had much trouble adjusting to mouse/keyboard scheme, but then, that was a long time ago, so I don't really remember. There are some games, though, that I couldn't possibly imagine playing on it, like Devil May Cry 3, Assassin's Creed, and from what I've heard, The Witcher 2.

You have much better controll over your hand than over your thumb, so a mouse should be more accurate.

I don't. My thumb is much more precise than my hand.

Are you factoring in aim assist, used by most console shooters?

most shooters I've played didn't have aim assist.

most shooters I've played didn't have aim assist.

COD4, MW2, BO, Halo, Bad Company 2 all have aim assist. (Bad Company 2 also has 25% extra damage on consoles, so it seems like your more accurate if you then play on PC)
I know in Black Ops you can turn it off, but it's on by default in most games, and some you can't disable it.

I too use no aim asist.

I think its all about what you've grown up with. Or whats more your preference.
I would let this decide on individual grounds and not a group thing. You either better with one or the other. But most people seem to prefer mouse, but most of these people seem to be PC users so its probably skewed.

Lets try not to get this into a PC/Console war ok guys?

It was harder for me to go from PC to console than the other way around. The keyboard and mouse are much more natural to me, I guess. And I can aim more quickly and accurately to kill dem newbs.

When I got a 360, I mainly had issues adapting from the Playstation to the Xbox controls. I can't tell you how many times I got a prompt to press X and hit the bottom button. :banghead:

But now I'm back with the Sony systems, so that's no longer an issue. As for the transition from PC to console, it's pretty seemless for me. I have fun with gamepads and the mouse and keyboard.

You'll get used it. I play on consoles and PC so I'm quite accustomed to the control scheme each system has.

The mouse I can get used to but all the little keys all feel similar. Sometimes I take my hand off the keyboard and have to look directly at it to see whats wrong, and when your playing a fast paced game such as a shooter multi-player or maybe a platformer this could spell your end.

A PC gamer here. After years of occasional console (PS2/3) usage, I still can't stand gamepads and joysticks. They make my wrists hurt in just a few hours of usage.

Honestly, you'll be too busy picking your jaw up from the floor to worry about how much you're getting owned. After about a week or so you'll be a bit below average. I played Shadowrun on PC as my first shooter on the PC since my huge xbox diversion, and playing against console kids really helps you, because if you're below average with a kb/m setup, you're well, well above average to people using a controller.

After that I moved on to CS:S and CoD4. You will, however, develop a different playstyle. Whereas my console playstyle on CoD4 is sporadic, my PC one is much more patient, less prony, and much better aimed.

Ohh, and sniping on PC shooters rocks.

As far as RPGs, they generally have better control schemes that you'll get used to in about half of a week. Bethesda RPGs, you'll be too busy being ecstatic over the endless mod and graphical possibilities that you won't notice that you're playing a bit below your norm.

When you switch to PC gaming you realize just WHY every PC gamer sounds so "high and mighty". Its just the bees knees.

And no, I really didn't have a problem getting used to it, but I was a child of the 90's and was using a computer from a young age, although my main gaming devices were consoles until about 2006.

I'm not particularly good with either mouse and keyboard or controllers, so no. :P Since around 2005 my gaming has been split almost equally between PC and a plethora of different consoles and I don't have too much trouble going back and forth, though I'm pretty much helpless if I'm using a different keyboard than I'm used to. I've also never been able to use the function keys effectively, but that's not really a result of platform hopping.

I've played PC and console games for over two decades. They are all different but you get used to them. Hell, there's USB controllers that mimic console ones in case you're that non-adapting.

I've always played both, so no transition for me. I prefer controllers for some types of games, and kb/m for other types.

I actually had more of a sentimental value difficulty then anything. I had my xbox 360 for so long, and I changed to PS3. Though when I logged on to my PSN account and start playing online games for free instead of $60 the sadness went away pretty quick, but the 360 was still one of my best friends.... I will miss it... :cryvaultboy:
