Not horrible by a long-shot but it would be a completely different game. The idea behind a post-apocalyptic scenario is a ruined landscape with lingering radioactivity. The passage of time allows the after effects of nuclear war to do the utmost in mutation of DNA over time resulting in horrible mutations wandering the wastes.

The closer you get to the actual bomb dropping date the fewer mutant variations.

What recordings?

No it's pretty cool! But, I don't see how it's spoiler-y.

I've considered this - perhaps a "flashback" sequence in a future game could cover this scenario. It would, as suggested above, become "survival horror" rather than "post-apocalyptic", though.

What recordings?

The one with the teacher. They say how they went on a school-trip to Lamplight Caverns with hundreds of students, and around 4 or 5 advlts. There's two holotapes in that series.
It's recorded just as the bombs drop, also explains why Lamplight is full of children, and became a haven for them.

Fallout Two into says it best

"War. War never changes. The end of the world occurred pretty much as we predicted. To many humans not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons as alway purely human ones. The earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing an atomic spark struck by human hands, quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rianed down from the skies. Continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished. Their spirits becoming part of the back ground radiation that blanketed the earth. A quiet darkness fell across the planet lasting many years"

A game that take place before the great war would not be Fallout. A week or two before the great war is not enough time to have a great RPG. I don't want to know the details about the Great War. Little bits here and there are awesome but for it all to be told would svck. Great war also only lasted Two Hours.

They are unimportant. That's the beauty of Fallout. Really, who cares what happened? The end result is, the world has plunged into utter disaster. Then they throw you in that world, and say; play.

Sure, it's interesting to know what happened beforehand, but not interesting enough to have an entire game on.

Edit: As for what happened right after the great war, again, it's not enough to base a whole game on. Just madness, and carnage. It would be fun to watch, but you can't really play that.

A game before the Great War would not be Fallout and would be unwelcome to me because I don't want to know it's not really important. Only thing I need to know is "To many humans not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons as alway purely human ones."

After the Great war is Fallout. I would not mind a game that takes place in the few decades after the great war but that would have to be done very well. Also a few decades would not really be enough time for new cultures to form.

I know this kind of off-topic but you should check out the "Fallout Bible". There is a really good timeline that gives some pretty interesting insight. The whole bible can be read and downloaded at http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Bible and the timeline can be view at http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Bible_0 (Pro Tip - scroll down to "Timeline repair: Second strike")

I like the idea personally, but I think it should be done in the form of a playable "flashback". Perhaps when the Vault Dweller picks up an old journal discussing it?

It would make for quick game play...

I think this idea would be excellent. However I would like a different experience for a pre-war--war--post-war survival game. The Fallout 3 playing style is great for a mutant-ravaged landscape (only) in my opinion. I would want more play-ability towards GTA IV or Red Dead Redemption, where the 3rd person model is DYNAMIC and will actually fall off his feet quite often if he has fallen from a ledge, if an explosion occurs next to him, or if something like a vehicle collides with him. The Assassin's Creed running system is one of my personal favorites because the speed at which your player moves is completely adjustable (Amount of pressure on both the R trigger and L thumb-stick as well as holding A in different amounts gives you different slow walking/walking/jogging/running/sprinting speeds). The Fallout 3 player model seems a bit too robotic in my opinion.

But overall I think this idea, if tweaked considerably, could definitely be a potentially awesome game.
