Was Skyrim ahead of its time? Part 2

Post » Wed Sep 25, 2013 4:00 pm

First thread filled up rather quickly with a lot of differing opinions and I also had someone PM me asking me to open another one, so here it is. Here's Part 1 http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1474032-was-skyrim-ahead-of-its-time/

Something I've been thinking about lately and discussing with some friends as well. Skyrim was a true phenomenon you don't see in gaming too often. Maybe once every 5-10 years. GTA V being the most recent. Skyrim took the gaming world by storm and propelled TES series and Bethesda into legit stardom. Was Skyrim ahead of it's time? It's loaded, packed to the brim with content, the audio/video/presentation is beautiful, and it's massive on every level.

I agree with those in the last thread who said Oblivion propelled Bethesda into "legit stardom."

This, the stardom was established with Oblivion. Skyrim certainly solidified the stardom though.

Agreed. I'd also like to add that the marketing was top notch and it's like everything aligned together perfectly at the right time for TES. Beth has the best marketing/PR team if you ask me. I follow Mr. Peter Hines on twitter and he has a brilliant mind.

Did you actually deem it necessary to repeat that statement? :sick: I threw up a little, the first time you posted it.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for giving credit and praise, but a pat on the back is quite enough. No need to stroke his.... ego.

Paradox Interactive and Fatshark are an excellent example of 'better out there'. There are devs replying to customers almost everyday on their official forums. On the other hand, Valve is an other example of bad PR, even worse than Bethesdas.

I don't know if the Creation Engine or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is considered ahead of it's time. But here is what the Creation Engine that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim runs on is capable of.

- full-scale battles on land and sea (with the player being able to participate);

- the possibility to buy every empty house;

- painting and making music;

- providing training to other characters;

- employing couriers who can travel anywhere on Andoran;

- renting rooms and houses for any length of time.

Yes the Player Character (PC) is able to go into full scale battles on land and sea there is even the possibility of naval battles that's why it says and sea as well.

This mod has cloth physics (Capes, cloaks only at the moment from what I saw in YouTube videos).

These do not exist on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) or Xbox 360 because of the consoles limitations.

These exist on PC only but not for regular PC gamers who are also modders and programmers.

Why does it not exist for those PC gamers?

Because there is a team of Russian PC gamers who got all of the source code from Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios for the Creation Engine to develop their own standalone The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mod you have to purchase a copy of the PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim though in order to play this mod.

Here's their website. Read all of the information about the mod they are developing.

http://www.andoran.com/en/

Scroll to the bottom of the website page and read this.

Even before the release of Skyrim, the Andoran team had started work on transferring the project to the new Creation Engine (file formats of Oblivion and Skyrim are very similar). That decision meant we were able to include things of which the Oblivion engine is incapable, even expanding the gameplay possibilities along the way. Here is a short list of the new things which the Creation engine has allowed us to
implement:

- full-scale battles on land and sea (with the player being able to participate);

- the possibility to buy every empty house;

- painting and making music;

- providing training to other characters;

- employing couriers who can travel anywhere on Andoran;

- renting rooms and houses for any length of time.

We have also introduced the system of Daedric Ratings which will allow the environment and especially NPCs to react more realistically to interactions with you.

Just to be clear, transferring the game to the TES V engine doesn't imply that we will be using Skyrim's game mechanics however. The role-playing system is closer to that in TES III: Morrowind in point of fact.

There's a few reasons why I believe Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios will release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC (With updated graphical effects and draw distances in a free patch), PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One.

So here are my reasons.

So when I read this stuff a few weeks ago it made me realize this.

1. Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios sold over 20 million copies of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. If you are a business owner you would have to realize this potential of the possibilities to release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for PC (With a free patch to update every graphical effect and draw distances), PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One with the money you earned from selling over 20 million copies of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

2. The money Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios earned from selling over 20 million copies earned them more money that what they spent on developing and marketing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim so there is no reason to no release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC (With a free patch to update every graphical effect and draw distances, PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One.

3. The fact that Grand Theft Auto V's source code got leaked and in that source code is source code for PC and PlayStation 4 (PS4's) Operating System (OS) proves that Rockstar will release Grand Theft Auto V for PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4), and possibly Xbox One because Grand Theft Auto V just released at the end of this current generation of consoles life cycle and beat Call of Duty: Black Ops II's billion dollar (USD) profit in sales in 3 days

4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim also released somewhat close to the end of this current consoles life cycle they had to cut out a few things since the current consoles out right now cannot handle some stuff because of the current generations consoles hardware limitations. Also the fact that Todd Howard said when The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released that they will add tessellation to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sometime in the future should be proof that Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios will release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC (With a free patch updating all of the graphical effects and draw distance), PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One.

So do you think this is true? I will be so pissed off if I see in 1 at least 1 year from now Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios not releasing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on PC (With a free patch updating all of the graphical effects and draw distance), PlayStation 4 (PS4), and Xbox One. I mean would Bethesda Game Studios of developed the Creation Engine to be capable of doing this stuff fro The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and then not release it? Sounds stupid to me if you ask me. But then again who knows what Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios will announce this year or in 1 year from now.

Valve is really that bad? I've never had to deal with them because I refuse to use Steam and I believe their games are some of the most overrated I've ever seen.

I think Skyrim was ahead of its time in terms of merging hardcoe and casual appeal, i have yet to see any other game succeed at this. When i heard all the things being striped/not being added back in i started to get seriously worried that it would no longer be the type of game i want it to be and expected it to be. However, it worked well. And while im still disapointed about some things i think attracting casuals is good for the long term financial health of the game.

As far as the actual gameplay goes its not much different from oblivion. Oblivion and morrowind were much bigger in terms of "taking a jump to stardom".

I have nothing but fond memories of bugs and gamebreaking lag.

And of course, paying 20$ for dlc that causes my game to stutter is also pretty swell.

Great points. No other RPG has come close this generation in both critical and commercial success. It's unheard of for an RPG to sell 20 million plus. The entire Mass Effect trilogy combined doesn't even come close, which is crazy!

Their support service is good. Each time I needed it I got helped out. By PR I mean paying someone for opening their mouth on why a certain game is taking so long develop, or why they're being so tight lipped about everything related to them, or what is of the SteamBox (I think that will be announced this week). Anyway, you get it.

not a good comparison... Bioware titles are known to focus on specific "Niche" fanbases... Skyrim was designed to be just generally appealing (as was Oblivion)...

Anyways, Skyrim was not ahead of it times... (well, maybe in the case it could have used a few more months in the Development stage)...

it was pretty much Oblivion with updated Graphics and a few new and tweaked features... far from groundbreaking..

Sure, its a great game, I am not denying that, but it is far from "The Best Ever!".. we all enjoy it, but I guarantee you there are games out there most of us enjoy more..

And many removed ones, topped with embarrassing decline in quest lines' quality :teehee:

But atleast it fixed that over the top level scaling.
