If 6 was 11...

... and you found yourself contemplating the creation of a "modern OOO" (for 2011 and beyond), what mods would you incorporate (partly or wholly) or bundle?

Also, if you have any thoughts as to what the "core" of this overhaul would be like, feel free to post about that too.

Curiosity, is all that prompted me to start this thread. A "what if"; nothing more.

My personal opinion is that it's better to use something like FCOM, which gives you greater flexibility to mix and match the components you would like to use, rather than trying to build a single comprehensive overhaul. While the latter may be easier to install, as OOO has demonstrated bundled components can quite easily get out of date. FCOM may be a bit tedious to install the first time, but it's relatively easy to update components when they're not incorporated directly.

Fair enough, that you like FCOM. Many apparently do!

Not quite in the spirit of the thread, mind you. As you like - but perhaps if you wish to state your preferences of overhaul, there might be a better thread for that? An overhaul comparison one, perhaps...

Id like to see a merging of WAC, Warcry New Dimension and other new overhaul mods. FCOM still uses mods that haven't been updated with new content for a good while now. I've been playing with FCOM for years but there are much better overhauls available.

Sorry if I misinterpreted what you were asking. I was directly replying to your question about what components I would like bundled into an overhaul, not stating my preference of overhaul. My comment wasn't so much about preferring FCOM specifically compared to other overhauls but rather that bundling itself can be problematic. FCOM is an example of something that provides some modularity, although it does have issues such as the outdated bundled mods in OOO which of course is the core of FCOM. I wasn't suggesting it was ideal, simply that I prefer that kind of approach to a single bundle.

In the case of OOO and the specific bundled mods you mentioned, Harvest Flora has a critical update that was released after OOO and Living Economy has typically been replaced by Enhanced Economy in many load orders. Other things like Drop Lit Torches, Gem Dust, etc. also have alternatives now. I think that may be one reason new bundled overhauls are becoming less common.

Unless the bundle is actively maintained it can become an issue, so my ideal overhaul would be one that provides great modularity.

Slightly off topic, but I prefer everything modular instead of merging.
I wish there was some overhaul basically like Project Nevada for New Vegas. For those who do not know PN, there's a required module which implements some core features, and then separately there is e.g. the Rebalance Module or the Equipment Module. That's why I don't like most overhauls, they implement too much stuff I don't want in my game.

Hmmm. Yeah, I'd rather see for example, TIE's ingredients taken out and those that COBL doesn't have added to it. That way I can use both mods.

One thing to understand about OOO (and other projects back from 2006) is that we simply didn't have today's tools available. Some may remember that there was a big (and I mean really big) flamewar back then as several modders proposed that something like mod deisolation may be possible. It was unheard of! People were called insane for having such a crazy idea!

Today mod deisolation is used by nearly all major mods that I know of. We had to do things differently back then. I doubt that other modders of that time would use the same outdated methods today. I may be totally of the track, but I think an OOO (or Frans, or whatever else) today would be totally different, offering users a lot more customisation options, if only because today it is possible. It wasn't back then.

If I were going to start an overhaul today, my first step would be gathering the resources I want to use, creating a core module with the absolute essence of my vision, and then expand with optional modules from there on.

Which mods would be on my list? Oh, I've got no clue, being out of the loop for too long already.
