I play on normal hardness on the PC and for some reason I never back up when I’m in a fight. I may shift position side to side for a better angle, or even move forward, but not backward. That’s not necessarily a good thing.
Never had a Death Claw get to me. My stealth characters take them out with 1, 2 or 3 Vats head shots. They are the easiest big game to kill IMO. Sometimes I shoot them from afar so they will come to me, then kill them with 2 or 3 Vats head shots. That way I don’t have to walk far to get their hand thing.
I shoot Albinos at long range too, just to get them to come to me. I usually free shoot for a while, reload, then give them a full load in Vats - two or three shots at a time. They take about a clip and a half from the A3-21 Plasma Rifle to kill. They do get to me sometimes, but one stem pack takes care of that. Two or more of them can be a problem, so I generally locate myself on a tall rock or bluff before I start shooting. For what it’s worth, I’ve found that if you shoot Albinos in the stinger two shots at a time in Vats, then repeat, that it seems to do more damage than unloading the whole string at once. A sniper rifle will kill them a extreme range after 10 to 15 rounds while they are running around in circles looking for you.
Reavers are hard to kill with stealth Vats head shots, so I usually give them a couple in Vats then free shoot till they go down. One clip from the A3-21 usually does the trick. They’re more frightening than they are dangerous.
Behemoths, the fire hydrant monsters, are special characters, and each one is different in what is the best way to kill them. There’s not enough of them to really establish a good killing relationship. I’ve killed them with sniper rifles, mini nukes, missile launchers, and piles of land mines. And yeah, my second play through character got wasted at GNR because she didn’t back up.
Overlords, well they’re the Overlords, and do a lot of damage before you can kill them. They’re not that hard to kill, but they can take my level 30 character down 50% very quickly in the initial engagement if they have a Tri-Beam. They can’t kill me before I kill them, but it sure is exciting in the tween. I guess they are the hardest to kill, except for the bullet sponge Behemoths which are like moving mountains with a Tonka truck.
Way back when I bought the Game of the Year disc with the DLC on it, I cheated and read up on the Wiki about Point Lookout. It said that some of the Swamp Folk were hard to kill. Sooo…I took 2 repaired Fat Mans and over a hundred Mini-Nukes. Didn’t have any problems except for about killing myself when I shot at some of them too close. Other play throughs there have had no problem while using the A3-21 Plasma Rifle.
Vertibirds are illusive targets, but not too hard to kill if you can shoot straight. If you can get on them quickly, then 10 or 12 shots from a good Plasma Rifle will ground them.
Every thing else is generally a one shot affair in the vanilla game.
