[REQ/IDEA] Washing Machine

Post » Wed Nov 17, 2010 3:31 am

Came up with the idea a couple days ago when I went through my wardrobe and found "grimy" and "dirty" pre-war clothes.

I don't even know if it would be possible, but a washing machine would be pretty great. Putting these clothes in the washing machine would give you a clean outfit. As I wrote this, I thought it'd be cool if washing the clothes too much would result in the clothes being replaced with a "Washed Out" variant, but I suppose that would require lower condition pre-war clothing to go down to "dirty" and then "grimy", which would make this mod a bit more complicated.

Just something I'd like to see in the game, thought I'd put it out there.

its an interesting idea, i would like to see it done to add more depth.
It would however be drawing ground water which is irradiated unless you add a purifier to the mix.

Another suggestion for the brave soul who would take this on - washing clothes could reduce your radioactivity level.

Either that, or maybe create a Shower mod :)

Washing clothes... with radioactive water.. reduces radiation? I don't think it works the way you think it works... Maybe in the basin after you turn on Project Purity. :)

Hmm though. Reading the bit about using Washo! for Rock It launcher ammo gives me a new character idea. First, I need the gun and ammo. Then maybe a rolling pin or nailbat to use as a ruler... and a nun's habit!

Raider: **** You!

Nuclear Nun: Young man, I'm going to have to wash your mouth out with soap for that. (Detergent shot to the head)

Haha, wow. Now all we need is for someone to make a mod that replaces dirtied clothes with clean(er) ones.

Actually, it'd be relatively easy, making use of that washing machine resource by RegentEagle. :goodjob:

I had thought of this before, but without a washing machine model in-game it would have been pretty pathetic-looking popping your clothes in an oven or a metal box to clean them. :shakehead:
I might even tackle this as a bit of light relief from some other mods I'm working on.

I was thinking that you'd have to put Washo and clean water in the w/m along with the clothes.

Just thinking off the top of my head here, but something like:
Add the washing machine to both player houses. Perhaps have to buy it? Not sure anyone would bother... the rewards of having clean clothes are not particularly valuable.
To use it, click - that would open a container menu.
Add the clothes (Grimy/dirty pre-war stuff)
Add a box of detergent (the clothes are really dirty!)
Add let's say three bottles of purified water
Wait an hour... open the w/m again...
Voila! Pre-war dirty/grimy becomes clean pre-war...

Maybe some other options just to spice things up...
...sometimes the cleaning fails? Clothes too dirty.
...sometimes the old clothes simply disintegrate due to age, wear and tear in the machine.

Not sure what else could be put in... any further ideas?

Of course, as normally happens with mod ideas, this could grow legs and get more complicated, making it trickier to implement.
But the basic idea of "use-washing-machine-to-convert-dirty-clothes-to-clean-clothes" is quite straight forward.

If no one else intends to run with this, I'll have a look tonight in the GECK and see if I can put a simple version together.

Maybe a chance (based off of your Intelligence) that you mess up, the clothes shrink and are unwearable? An alternative to the disintegration.

Good idea, they can shrink to the kid size version.

Are there kid-sized versions? And are they unwearable by the player? If so, then this would work as an alternative to disintegration.
Wouldn't it be better though, to have the chance of a failure based on your Luck? How much intelligence does it take to use a washing machine? :twirl:

Well it's not like clothes shrink by chance, it's because you did something wrong.

If there is no kids version, there could just be a little pop-up notice.

Hi all

Ok - I've downloaded RegentEagle's model and popped it in-game. Looks great, and I'm going ahead with this.

I think I'll put the washing machines in places like the Megaton common house, Rivet city common room and so on, rather than in the player houses. This is partly for rp purposes - think of them as laundromats, but it's mainly because the player houses are so crowded, and so many mods change them that I'm bound to run into incompatibilities unless I steer clear of the player houses.

I'll get a beta out asap, with one in megaton to see how it goes for ya.

Hi all

Sorry for the delay on this. When I played with it in the GECK, I started getting ideas, which is always a bad thing... damn thing started growing legs and the straight-forward simple possibilities were thrown out the door.

Also, the Winter Olympics have been chewing up my spare time, so now that they're over, normal service can resume...

I'm toying with the notion of having 'laundered' versions of the prewar clothes which give a significant charisma bonus for a single wear (you've gone to the trouble of sprucing yourself up, so people like you better, and they're impressed by your clean clothes), after which they return to being 'grimy' or 'dirty'.

So basically, you'd use the washing machine, and get 'Laundered Pre-war ', then when you equip the laundered clothes you'd get the charisma bonus until you take it off, at which stage it would revert to the dirty version and you'd have to wash it again to get the bonus again, etc.

Does that concept sound ok(ish)?

BUT - I have another problem - my graphics card has suddenly got very flaky, and I can't actually play or mod at the moment. It crashes more or less immediately whenever I try to play any game. :brokencomputer: I presume it's a dodgy gfx memory chip, as it's fine when I'm just browsing the web and so on, but the moment I stress it by loading a game, I get graphic corruption and then the pc totally crashes and reboots.

I need to figure out what gfx card to buy as a replacement for my now-very-dodgy 8800GTX. Anyone know what the current best option is? It needs to be a PCI Express x16 card... not too pushed about the price, I'm more concerned with power, dependibility and compatibility with a Dell xps 710... Don't worry about it, I'll ask on the hardware forum, but if you have any recommendations... I'm all ears.

Not sure about GFX cards, but I believe AMD/ATI is currently the way to go (5850/5870?).

Anyways, laundered clothes with bonus sounds good.

I've just started using http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11040 and thought that maybe the cleanness of clothes could be timed, similar to said mod (rather than staying clean until you remove them). Not sure how long the timer is, but after a while you become "dirty" (ie, your character skin texture actually changes to a dirty version - looks pretty cool) and you have to activate a sink to have a wash.

Also, I was wondering if one of the items needed to activate a washing machine could be money (Caps? Pre-war Money? (Would be better if there were coins...)) like those machines you would get in a laundrette/laundromat? Just a thought.

:)

@Xepha

I'll check out that mod, might get some ideas, ta for the pointer.

And you're spot on about the money thing - I meant to include that in my list of requirements for using the laundry, once I decided to go the public laundromat route rather than a personal washing machine in the houses.

As you say, caps are hardly ideal for popping in a coin slot, unless you have a hammer handy! :brokencomputer:

Maybe the way to go is to have 'Laundry tokens' which you have to buy from nearby vendors. I'm sure it's possible to get my hands on a coin-shaped model either in-game or elsewhere and retexture it as a laundry token. Actually, a retex of the caps might work, they're probably just flat discs under that texture.

Just a quick progress report (no-progress report actually, I'm sorry to say)

My gfx card is definitely dead now - I've been too busy workwise this last week to even boot up my gaming pc since wednesday night when it miraculously seemed ok for a few hours. Just tried it tonight and it's seriously kaput, barely lets me boot windows, and with serious gfx corruption even then.

Now that I've made the work deadline (an accurate description - I'd have been dead if I didn't make it  ) I can take the time to sort out the gaming pc and get back to playing and modding.
So I should be ploughing ahead with this from about midweek.

Expect proper progress after that.

Hallelujah, jump for jeebus... got a new gtx260 in pcworld this morning, installed it tonight and we're back in business.

So it's back to setting up the laundromat empire... expect progress real soon now...
