Wasteland Carnivale (forms of Wasteland entertainment)

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 4:27 am

Ok. The thread title states a "Wasteland Carnivale" but this is more of a Wasteland Entertainment thread in general.

The movie "A Boy and His Dog" had a small "theater" which was basically chairs and couches under a shade with an average Tube TV in front playing different cuts of some old movie clips catergorized to sections that contained action, nudity... They served popcorn and played the same reel the next day in exchange for any canned good (which was the film's main currency).

The Metro series had raiders watching rats run across a sewer and betting on who gets to the finish line first. In the second game they even had a theater with several acts.

FO2 had New Reno where you could watch a boxing match and join yourself. You could also watch a considerably long monologue by a stand up comedian and his jokes were pretty rad (pun intended).

New Vegas had well...New Vegas. The Strip was pretty much what you'd expect (maybe a little toned down.) The most entertaining part was a random encounter with NCR ladies dancing in the Ultra Luxe fountain. They did OK for the Aces Theater acts, the fact that they dedicated a whole quest for it. The acts that followed were average. Hadrian the Ghoul's act was pretty disappointing but it was more due to the voice actor's delivery of the lines. BUT we were also fortunate enough to have had The Thorn (though the enemies froze up occasionally forcing you to reload an earlier save.)

FO3 had the short encounter with The AntAgonizer and the Mechanist and unfortunately it was one you had to stop. Since they were going for a downright miserable experience with the game, it didn't really need entertainment anyway.

Now this is pretty ambitious but for FO4 I'd like to see a Carnival. Nothing too big have few tents with booths in between
Maybe have your typical Clown, Acrobats who can teach some melee moves, Deathclaw Tamer (Admit it, you wanna see Red Lucy back *wink *wink), possibly have a good Super Mutant for a strongman...
You can even have a "Grandson of Bob's Iguana Sweets" outside with kids lining up.

For the quest, I would love to see a Carnival Murder done in the post-apocalyptic setting. This is where they could really get creative with possible scenarios ranging from someone simply getting clubbed over the head, to poisoned food to something extreme like finding a limb in one of the animal cages.

Opinions?

I'm hoping that cage fight thing in the trailer is something we ca participate in, or just sit and enjoy a bunch of fights between random npcs. Maybe betting.

I'm pretty sure the film they showed in A Boy and His Dog was in fact, a pormo.... I'm not really sure a carnival is fitting of Fallout, at least not in Boston...

that's actually a cool idea

don't think that red lucy would go for the carnival thing since she seems more into the bloodlusty arena vibe, but everything else is cool

are carnivals a big thing in boston culture?

A carnival would actually be a fairly easy thing to make. Cages for wild creatures, a few unique looking npcs for the freak show.. A few show girls for various reasons... Tame creatures that follow around their trainer..

Basically what I am thinking of is a mix of hbo's carnivale with a dash of american horror. Something like that would be fairly entertaining.

Gambling dens, drug dens, those virtual reality dens we saw in concept art, fighting pits, stuff like that. Just in general a lot of dens really.

Well it's likely we'll have cage fighting, and we probably will be able to participate in it ourselves. I don't see why not. But a carnival doesn't really fit well with the Boston area. Maybe some boat races, but I doubt that.

I would prefer the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Richard%27s_Faire! It's in October... so it would be there as the bombs fell

Point Lookout sorta had a carnivale atmosphere.. Okay.. not really. But there was a Ferris Wheel and some Dodgem Cars!.

Okay.. Ill be honest. That foreshore area depressed the hell outta me :) Wanted to go on the rides! :)

I can see perhaps a Gladiator arena involving bats of various descriptions though. Gotta keep the bat maker in business making new ones.

Does Boston have an Ice Gang? If not it needs to have one!

I would like some of that. You really thought it through pretty well. I hope we can really bet in the cage matches not like the Thorn. I guess if we could bet what we want though people would just save scum so I'm guessing we won't be able to. It will probably just be small caps

I saw the words "Wasteland Carnival" and I was immediately hooked! Please tell me this idea includes Raider Clowns!

Ooh sort of like the "arena" scene in Escape from New York where Snake had to fight that really big dude with a bat with nails driven in the head and a garbage can lid for a shield lol.

Your carnival is a good idea or would make a neat Mod.

Wasteland entertainment seems rather slim violence and six (sounds like tv).

Live music we saw, Comedian (talk about rough crowd).

Maybe something akin to the old wild west shows, shooting playing cards, rope tricks i dunno

Spider and cricket fights are big around the world, I could see wastelanders doing this (mole rat races i think we had in 2). dice and pitching pennies I expect also big.

You know it would be really funny running across some bandits playing that board game that was on the table in the demo or monopoly. Cause stealing stuff and hurting people can get boring after a while.

In 3 did you ever happen across the raiders playing baseball, hoping we get a bit more of that . Might see those hockey fellows again....

Roller ball?

Well you have already seen the 'cage' of sorts with the lady with 2 hands in the air.

They might call it being 'sent to the cage for batting practice'. A Questline where you might get sold into slavery and have to fight your way free by fighting wasteland animals, synth aberrants etc. OR its just a way to earn caps by beating the crap outta other challengers. (ie NPC x only respects those who have beaten X number of opponents in the Arena)

People have gotta get their entertainments in the future and blood sport is a guaranteed people pleaser.

With the amount of homages this game series has to Mad Max and how much it OWES to Mad Max, a baseball related thunderdome sounds pretty awesome to me.

ICE GANG! - Goalie Ledoux.

(Although with this quest line you can see how in 200 years the concept of Ice Hockey or Hockey as gone from a sport people watch , to a sport people watch for other people to die in) The whole concept hasnt changed, it has .. evolved.

The Vault people seem to be more orientated towards Baseball as the 'true' American Pastime. Goalie Ledoux and his fellow Ice Gang members are the 'Canadian' affront to the Capital Wasteland (Which is why all their names are variations on Canadian Hockey players)

Whats interesting is that in Fallout you dont hear of Gridiron at all. THe Fallout universe dosnt seem to ever go there.
