Wasteland Survival Guide Thread #2

I got one. Sorry if it's been said already but i don't think i've seen it. Explorers trekking through the arctic would do this with their supplies and it would work in NV also...

If you're ever carrying an abundance (abundance being the operative word here) of supplies out in the wilderness and think you can spare 1 or 2 food/water items find a spot you'll remember and leave a couple stashed there. You never know it may save your life one day down the track if you're in the area and in desperate need of provisions.

aren't they supposed to leave a box of matches by the fire at any empty shacks they come across?
Your idea is a good one IMHO especially since you are guaranteed to need those supplies when you come back.

Use grenades sparingly and scan you surrounding first, you don't want it bouncing off a rock only land right next to the partially intact car you are taking cover behind.

Whe in doubt RUN AWAY!!!

- Disguises can be used to gain access to hostile areas.

- When disguised in a hostile area, avoid high ranking members, and possibly dogs. Take these guys out quickly and quietly - ideally from a distance, and take their outfits if needed.

- Not only should you stock up on food, drink, and stimpacks, but it is imperative to stock up on anti-venom, reloading components, and other secondary supplies.

I've got to ask.. Where did we learn we could use disguises by dressing as a member of a faction? That sounds awesome and fun but unlikely to be in game but I would like to be shown different!

Awesome guide by the way.

I cant be arsed to find it, but uh, as I've said in another thread. Disguising as an opposing faction only works on the lowly leveled grunts, posing an an NCR grunt to an NCR general is liable to get your ass blown off.

in FO3, on the loading screens, one of the first tips it gives is "learn to blend in", to look like a native. Never worked for me - the raiders still shot me on sight even though I looked more raider than they did. The only time I saw it work was: I walked into Megaton for the first time in a Vault 101 jumpsuit and Lucas Simms laughed at me "another newbie from the vault" or somesuch. Second game I played I walked in wearing a Tunnel Snake jacket, and he didn't laugh at me. Oh and the looking like a slave thing from The Pitt.

Shucks, well I suppose I will find out soon enough but I would really enjoy it if it is indeed in-game. Thanks anyway.

Tips to get more money:

-Sell your loots to merchants, especially the miscellaneous items which have more value than it's weight, an try to make sure t doesn't encumber you. Selling many Conductors in FO3 is better than selling one Vacuum Cleaner.

-Sell your trophy from your game ( game animals, eg. Geckos) to earn extra profit. I recommend you to sell Deathclaw items. eg. Deathclaw Egg.

-If you think the merchant could not buy your items because it's too expensive, try to repair your items first, so the merchant can get extra money from you, which he/she uses to buy your items, which bring in lots of profits.

-Try to sell weapons you loot from your enemies. Make sure it's not encumbering and it's valuable (eg. The Chinese Pistol in FO3. It's pathetic, but it's a good item to sell).

-I recommend you to sell unnecessary chems, as it's commonly weightless and valuable.

YOUR NEIGHBOURS WILL BE AN ACQUIRED TASTE

Simulations show drastic changes will occur in the human psyche due to the constant anxiety of daily survival. You will find neighbours whose very existence seems a sheer nightmare. But remember, while those aboveground will be seasoned by the horrors of the Wasteland, they are people just like you. Give them no reason to be hostile and they will remain amicable.

Edit-Yes I copied this off the FO3 manual before some genius points it out.

- Drugs and alcohol are the leading causes of addiction.

- Have patience. It will save your life.

- When sniping, don't stay stationary after shooting. Learn to move from hide to hide, as to prevent where the enemy thinks you are.

- With the use of explosive items - such as C4, preset traps, and mines - control the flow of enemy forces. When you control your enemy, you control your victory.

- Apply your oxygen mask before applying it to those around you - proverbially speaking, that is.

Shoot your automatic weapon in bursts to avoid muzzle climb. Every bullet missed is another you don't have when Mr. Deathclaw comes a' huntin.

True.. But bullets cost money that you could be spending on other survival items, which is what I think he was saying.

- Don't hesitate changing companions out of a sense of loyalty. Keep with you whom ever will give you the bonus that you need at the time.

- Doing missions will get you higher Exp. and Rep.; Higher Exp. and Rep. will get you more lucrative missions. More lucrative missions will allow you to survive longer.

If you can't get around a hostile group or unit then plan ahead, choose a suitable ambush point, if they are moving then set up well in advance (if they are moving away then they may clear the location, allowing you to slip around them) of them. Set traps en route to your location, anything will do but the stronger the better, and pick your shots.
Always have a second location to fall back to, I recommend a third, fourth...hell you should know the most defensible positions at all times. Should your main point be compromised bug out and retreat, make sure to avoid your own traps (if you aren't sure there's one there and it's facing you) and leave with time to get to the next location, don't have them hot on your heels.

Know your opponent, a deathclaw may be smart for an animal but it's not going to have the foresight of a military man, the most direct route is the one it will take, so be ready for it.
Similarly, a well trained unit will be cunning, they will move with cover fire, they will stay slightly off track and be keeping an eye out for traps. If you must take on a hostile unit of trained soldiers be ready for a brutal fight and try to end it as quickly as possible, bug out early and take them as they clear your first hide. Do not stay still for too long.

Always be aware of enemies around you, taking one powerful group on may result in more harm as the fight draws the attention of nearby units or the time elapsed leads to those you evaded before crossing paths with the firefight. The shorter the fight the better for you.

You're there to survive, do so. Avoid an encounter if you can, they may be friendly or they may not, putting yourself in harms way is a very bad idea.

When facing a powerful melee opponent/creature always shoot for the legs first.

Use companions to pull attention off of you so that flanking is possible.

If your path is blocked by an explosive trap that you can not see/disarm, try tossing a grenade at it.

Entering a conversation with an ambiguous reply can sometimes net greater karma than wearing your heart on your sleeve.

If your enemy is carrying heavy firepower, like a missile launcher, sometimes it is better to disable it before focusing on the body.

Shooting a weapon out of an enemies hands saves damage to your person as well as giving you a few seconds of free time for shooting them as they run to pick it up.

- Survival is the key to success. You may have some other smaller goals, but none of them can be achieved if you don't survive.
